Archbishop of the Aba Ecclesiastical Province and leader, Southern Nigeria Bishops Conference, Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), Dr Isaac Nwaobia, has regretted that the country was on a downward slide and charged the Bola Tinubu administration to stem the tide.

In an interview with Ogbonnaya Ndukwe, the cleric said the continuous slide of the Naira against the American dollar, had also brought Nigerians untold hardships with no plan in place by the Tinubu administration to find solutions to them.
He spoke on other issues in this encounter with Saturday Sun. Excerpts.

Are you saying there is no sign the present government is on course to repair the country?

I still maintain that there is no hope, because up till this moment, the president and his men have not laid any good foundation for such a programme.

Like I said earlier, if he had at the point of assuming office, provided solutions on ways of revamping the economy, like proposals to build new refineries, repair the ones that are not in use, among other things that will boost the economy before subsidy removal, there’ll be hope. Now, we are just managing here, there, failing here, swapping there, making it here and losing there. Just trial and error is what we are doing both in the national economy and people’s individual lives.

The leadership has not shown any seriousness for improvement. So, I still say there is no hope in the present dispensation. We are in a state of hopelessness.

PoliticsGovernor Lawal Reacts As Court Frees Bandits Following Order From Abuja by ApcBacteriafonj(op): 1:24pm On Jun 14, 2024
Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has faulted the state judiciary for granting bail to some suspected bandit leaders who were arrested with weapons and brought before the court for trials.

The governor claimed that the suspected bandit leaders were released by order from powerful individuals in Abuja, who he said had been communicating with the suspected bandit leaders.

According to him, these powerful individuals had assured the suspects that they would regain their freedom immediately after being arrested.

He disclosed this during the swearing-in of new magistrates in Gusau, the Zamfara State capital, while also commending some members of the judiciary for their diligence and integrity.

He further stated that one of the suspected bandit leaders was traced to Bauchi State, where he was arrested, while the other was apprehended in Gusau, the state capital, and both were arraigned before the court.

Governor Lawal tasked the new judicial officers to execute their job according to the rules of their engagement, advising them to work with integrity and honesty, and to justify their appointments for the collective interest of all law-abiding citizens.

Governor Lawal reminded them of the current security challenges bedeviling the entire state, ranging from banditry, kidnapping, cattle rustling, and other forms of criminality, urging them to help address the situation.

Earlier, the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Kulu Aliyu, had charged the newly sworn-in magistrates to always be honest and dedicated to promoting the image and reputation of the judiciary, as all eyes are on them.

Recall that recently, the State Governor, Dauda Lawal, has been lamenting the insecurity situation in the state, claiming that some prominent persons residing in Abuja have been negotiating with the ravaging bandits.

He maintained that these powerful individuals live in Abuja and are initiating negotiations with the bandits in the state without his knowledge, which he said is causing an escalation of banditry activities in the state.

BusinessRe: My Refinery Will Reduce Fuel Price In Nigeria – Dangote ( Pic ) by ApcBacteriafonj(op): 8:52am On Jun 14, 2024
Asked to speak on whether or not his refinery would crash the pump price of petrol, which sells at an average of N700 per liter, Dangote gave no affirmative answer, explaining how the price of diesel fell from 1,700 to N1,200 when his diesel flooded the Nigerian market.

BusinessMy Refinery Will Reduce Fuel Price In Nigeria – Dangote ( Pic ) by ApcBacteriafonj(op): 8:46am On Jun 14, 2024
The Chairman of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote, has said his $20 billion 650,000 barrels per day Lagos-based refinery will crash the price of fuel as it reduced the price of diesel in Nigeria.

Dangote disclosed this at a recent Afreximbank Annual Meetings and AfriCaribbean Trade & Investment Forum in Nassau, The Bahamas.

Asked to speak on whether or not his refinery would crash the pump price of petrol, which sells at an average of N700 per liter, Dangote gave no affirmative answer, explaining how the price of diesel fell from 1,700 to N1,200 when his diesel flooded the Nigerian market.

He noted that his refinery currently has 4.78 billion liters of storage capacity for refined petroleum products.

“The issue of gasoline is certainly a different issue. That one is being dealt with by the government. But let me give you an example. In diesel, which the industries, transporters and everybody consume; when we first started, it was N1,700, and the dollar conversion was about N1,200 then. Immediately when we started, within two weeks we brought down the price to N1,000. We took it from N1,700 to N1,200 and from N1,200 to N1,700, we have given more than a 60 percent drop in price.

With the currency now back up to about N1,500 per dollar, the price is still below N1,200. That’s a big improvement, from N1,700 to N1,200. And the diesel is available, we are not living from hand to mouth anymore,” Dangote replied when asked about a possible petrol price cut.

“The country doesn’t have strategic reserves in terms of petrol, which is very dangerous. But in our plant now, when you came, we had only 4.78 billion liters of various tankage capacity. But right now, we’re adding another 600 million.

So effectively, as we go forward, the refinery will be the strategic reserve of the country in terms of petroleum products,” he noted.

Dangote alleged that the reason why international oil companies refused to sell crude oil to his refinery was that they did not want him to succeed.

“And I think that is the process that we’re now really going through. But the truth is that, yes, the country, the sub-region, and also the continent, of sub-Saharan Africa, need this refinery. So, you expect them to fight through non-supply of crude, non-purchase of the product, but I think it’s all temporary. We’ll get there,” he added.

Recall that Dangote Refinery turned to the US for 24 million barrels of crude supply monthly.
Consequently, the refinery shifted the date to commence supply of fuel to July 10–15, 2024, from June.

The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence has asked the federal government to immediately purchase new aeroplanes for the use of President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

The Committee made the call in a report issued after its technical subcommittee conducted a hearing on the status and airworthiness of aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet (PAF).

The Committee is of the strong and informed opinion that considering the fragile structure of the Nigerian federation and recognising the dire consequences of any foreseen or unforeseen mishap that may arise as a result of technical/operational inadequacy of the Presidential Air Fleet, it is in the best interest of the country to procure two additional aircraft as recommended,” the report read in part.

“This will also prove to be most cost-efficient in the long run apart from the added advantage of providing a suitable, comfortable and safe carrier befitting of the status and responsibilities of the office of the president and vice president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

PREMIUM TIMES exclusively obtained the report, signed by the Committee’s chairperson, Ahmed Satomi, and clerk, Makwe Eric. Some lawmakers say the document has since been forwarded to the presidency for action.

PoliticsProtesters Set To Hit The Streets On June 12 Over Hunger, Hardship by ApcBacteriafonj(op): 12:14pm On Jun 11, 2024
A coalition of Nigerian civil societies has announced a mass protest scheduled for Wednesday, June 12, to decry the hardship and hunger under the President Bola Tinubu-led government.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that the participating groups include the Take-It-Back Movement (TIB), African Action Congress party (AAC), Joint Action Front (JAF), Education Rights Campaign (ERC), Socialist Workers and Youth League (SWL), and PRP Vanguard.

In a joint statement titled “Enough is Enough to Hardship and Hunger, Great Nigerian People,” the organisations expressed their outrage over the soaring prices of essential amenities since May 29, 2023, when President Tinubu removed fuel subsidies.

According to them, the average Nigerian can no longer afford basic needs like food, transport, electricity, and school fees.

They said, “Hardly is any average Nigerian able to feed. We are hungry. Our children are hungry. Our youth are becoming criminals and prostitutes. Things are hard.

“Meanwhile, those who put us in this problem continue to feed on fat. President Tinubu, the First Lady and the First Son have turned Nigeria’s commonwealth into their private feeding bottle.

“The governors, senators, House of Representatives and House of Assembly members are collecting fat salaries and allowances
.

“Their friends in business like Aliko Dangote and other thieves, are also smiling to the bank. Yet they tell us to tighten our belts.”
