Msauza:HOW OLD IS NIGERIA....JUST LET DO SOME ARITHMETICS Long before 1500 much of modern-Nigeria was divided into states identified with contemporary ethnic groups. These early states included the Yoruba kingdoms, the Igbo Kingdom of Nri, the Benin Kingdom, the Hausa cities, and Nupe. Additionally numerous small states to the west and south of Lake Chad were absorbed or displaced in the course of the expansion of Kanem, which was centered to the northeast of Lake Chad. Bornu, initially the western province of Kanem, became independent in the late 14th century. Other states probably existed but the absence of archaeological data prevents accurate dating. In the south, the earliest Edo state was Igodomigodo which emerged in 900 AD. Despite its relatively small size geographically it is considered the cradle of Edo culture. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Nigeria_before_1500... hope this helps us..if not sorry is ur case...YOU THINK AND POST LIKE AN "ENDANGERED SPECIES" haha...just imagine...dont want to use a strong language seriously....am sure you are a REFUGEE IN SA...they would soon remove that FEEDER they use to choke ur mouth....even an average ibo man will nvr talk down on nigeria.... |

Nigeria has been in the forefront in the establishment and sustaining various continental and regional organizations. For instance, the Organization of African Unity (OAU) established on May 25, 1963, was primarily aimed at achieving two important objectives, namely: to ensure the quick decolonization of the remaining colonies in Africa and secondly to facilitate the rapid socio-economic growth and development of African states. In this respect, Nigeria did a lot in ensuring the implementation of the primary objectives upon which OAU was founded. For instance, in 1975, Nigeria granted the sum of N 13.5 million and military assistance to Angola ’s MPLA and also enlisted diplomatic support for the Angolan government within the O.A.U.; this had greatly accorded recognition to the Angolan government by many African states who were hitherto unwilling to give such recognition. In addition to this, Nigeria contributed enormously to several liberation movements in the continent. This had therefore greatly contributed towards the political independence of most African countries. For instance, on February 13, 1976, Nigeria donated the sum of two million dollars $2m to South Africa ’s Africa National Congress, ANC, and 500,000 dollars to Namibia ’s South West African People’s Organization, SWAPO. SWAPO was later granted permission to open office in Lagos . At about the same time, the Federal Ministry of Information inaugurated a committee for dissemination of information about the evils of Apartheid. Fundamentally, the committee was to intimate the government with current news and activities of the racist regime in South Africa and advise the government on the best way to approach her anti-Apartheid policies as well as enlighten the public on the situation in South Africa . That is not all, as the federal government nationalized British assets in Nigeria when the latter chose to continue conducting business with South Africa . Consequently, in March 1978, the federal government directed all its ministries and parastatals to stop dealing with Barclays Bank, owned by Britain . In the same vein, the British Petroleum company (BP) was also nationalized in July 1979. In addition to all these, Lt. General Obasanjo, in December 1976 launched the Southern African Relief Fund. The money collected was sent to Angola , Namibia and South Africa ’s liberation forces. Similarly, taking into cognizance fundamental role of economic integration among contiguous states and given the very small nature of many West African states in terms of population and economic output, Nigeria , under the leadership of General Yakubu Gowon spearheaded the formation of a 16-member regional integration body – ECOWAS - the treaty of which was signed on May 28, 1975. It is therefore essential to note that the phenomenal contributions made by Nigeria in the two organizations mentioned above have greatly contributed to the economic “prosperity” and political independence of many African countries. http://www.gamji.com/article8000/NEWS8160.htm |
Nigeria and the liberation of Africa[edit] Upon gaining independence, Nigeria quickly committed itself to opposing white minority governments. Nigeria backed the African National Congress (ANC) by taking a committed tough line with regard to the South African government and their military actions in southern Africa. Nigeria was also a founding member of the Organisation for African Unity (OAU, now the African Union), and has tremendous influence in West Africa and Africa on the whole. Nigeria has additionally founded regional cooperative efforts in West Africa, functioning as standard-bearer for ECOWAS and ECOMOG, economic and military organisations, respectively. Similarly, when civil war broke out in Angola after the country gained independence from Portugal in 1975, Nigeria mobilised its diplomatic influence in Africa in support of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA). That support helped tip the balance in their favour, which led to OAU recognition of the MPLA over the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola. Nigeria extended diplomatic support to another Marxist cause, Sam Nujoma's Southwest Africa People's Organization in Namibia, to stall the apartheid South African-installed government there. In 1977, the new General Olusegun Obasanjo's military regime donated $20 million to the Zimbabwean movement against the government of Rhodesia. Nigeria also sent military equipment to Mozambique to help the newly independent country suppress the South African-backed Mozambican National Resistance guerrillas. Although officially denied by the Nigerian government, Nigeria is known to have also provided secret military training at the Kaduna first mechanised army division and provided other material support to Joshua Nkomo and Robert Mugabe's guerrilla forces during the Rhodesian Bush War (Renamed Zimbabwe in 1979) against the white minority rule of Prime Minister Ian Douglas Smith, which was backed by the government of South Africa. Although her economy and technology could not have supported it, Nigeria announced to a bewildered international community that she was launching a nuclear programme of "unlimited scope" of her own. To demonstrate her seriousness against multi-national companies in Nigeria that violated the economic/trade embargo on the South African regime, the local operations of Barclays Bank was nationalised after that bank ignored the strong protests by Nigeria urging it not to buy the South African government bond. Nigeria also nationalised the British Petroleum (BP) for supplying oil to South Africa. In 1982, the Alhaji Shehu Shagari government urged the visiting Pontiff Pope John Paul II to grant audience to the leaders of Southern Africa guerrilla organisations Oliver Tambo of the ANC and Sam Nujoma of SWAPO.... we helped in liberating the BLACKS IN SA... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foreign_relations_of_Nigeria |
