1. Determine your goals and your budget.
What are the specific outcomes you hope to achieve by hiring a consultant? How will you evaluate the consultant’s performance? What sort of timeframe do you have in mind for the consultant to operate within?

Once you know these criteria, and discuss the project with your staff, you should establish a budget. It’s vital to establish the project details beforehand as consulting fees can range anywhere from 40-50 pounds per hour to over 200, depending on the complexity of the project. It is generally most economical to hire a local consultant and to hire based on a weekly fee.

2. Select a candidate with the specific experience you need
Most consults specialise in only one or two areas of the baking field; obviously, you will want to use one only in his or her area of expertise. Evaluate the proposals and select one based on which offers the most value for your money; it’s also a good idea to select a “runner up” as a plan B in case your first choice fails to pass reference checks, or there is some other issue.

5. Check your candidate’s references
This is the final step in selecting a bakery consultant; make sure all of his or her references check out. If you can speak with those references that have worked with the consultant on projects similar to the one you have proposed, that is ideal. Try to collect the most candid information possible; if it’s generally positive, you should be set to proceed with your project.
