AutosTop Car Maintenance Mistakes by autoselect(op):
To be quite honest, there are times when you really don’t have to care much about a car. Take for example,if it seems to be running smoothly. As long as it’s not smoking,or making a strange noise when you drive it and as long as there isn’t a big dent on the body or a smashed windshield, the car is considered “safe” and its not chopping any extra money. And you dont even take time to check the fluids or to check the tire pressure.

In an economy like ours,it makes much sense to pay a little more attention to our cars and it saves us more money on the long run. The day we drove the car from the car dealer,most of us aspire to keep the thing looking as new as possible. But many of us have “memory lapses,” or more than likely they fall back into bad habits. Car maintenance just happens to be one of them. Not keeping up on car maintenance can be expensive (in some situations, really expensive). Here’s our list of some of the biggest car maintenance mistakes you can make:

1. Low Tire Pressure
Upwards of 90 percent of all the vehicles on the road are driven with improperly inflated tires, with the majority being under inflated. Incorrect tire pressure can compromise cornering, braking and stability. In a worst-case scenario, incorrect tire pressure can lead to tire failure. It should come as no surprise that under-inflated tires also have an affect on fuel economy and tire life. Tire pressure changes constantly. This may be caused by a minor leak, but the most common factor in pressure change is ambient temperature. If tire pressure is too low, friction between the road and the tire increases. This result in increased tire wear. Low tire pressure also creates a situation where the tire can overheat, which usually ends in catastrophic failure.

2. Not Checking the Oil
It’s really important to check the oil level in your vehicle engine on a regular basis. That should be a basic task for all. Two things can cause drops in oil level: The engine burning oil or leaking oil. Either way, if the oil level becomes too low, you’re risking major engine damage. Often, the first thing to go—the bearings—is the worst that can happen. If they should get damaged, you won’t go very far before the crankshaft and the connecting rods become welded together (which can happen in a short manner of time). Checking oil level (and condition) is not difficult. For the most part, it’s a good idea to check the oil every time you fill your tank, especially if your vehicle is considered “high mileage,” or one with more than 75,000 miles on the odometer. It’s not difficult to check your car’s oil and it doesn’t even take five minutes.

3. Neglecting Oil and Filter Changes
Okay, we’ve mentioned checking the oil, but many people also postpone fluid and filter changes (engine oil, engine oil filters and coolant as well). Maintaining a clean, adequate supply of oil within the engine is absolutely critical for the long-term life or your vehicle. Operating conditions have an effect upon how often oil should be changed. Seasons have an effect too. Many of today’s cars and light trucks are engineered so that the condition of the oil is monitored based upon your driving habits. And when its time to change the oil, a message (actually, an “electronic nag”) will be displayed somewhere on the dashboard. Oil filters should be changed with the fluid,and not just changed with any cheap oil filter in the market. When it comes to oil filters, the words cheap and good usually cannot be used in the same sentence.The same goes for coolant. Coolant, does, in fact, wear out. As a result, the system should be “cleaned” and replenished on a regular basis.

4. Delaying Brake Pad Replacement
Stop-and-go driving (including traveling on the expressway), driving in mountainous terrain,or on our typical pot hole filled roads can severely shorten the lifespan of your brake pads. Mix all or some of them together and your brake pads (particularly the fronts, since they get the most use) will usually be worn quicker than you might imagine. Now modern cars and modern brake pads are virtually all equipped with audible wear sensors. Basically, once the brakes wear out, the pads will start making sounds, and not only when the brake pedal is depressed. The squawking and squealing will go on continuously, which is your key to getting the pads replaced soon. If you don’t, then the rotors will eventually be destroyed. What was a routine (and inexpensive) brake job then becomes costly.

5. Burned Out Bulbs
How many times do you take a walk around your car or truck and check the lights? You’re not alone. Many of us neglect vehicle lamps. Lamps are (obviously) very important, and there’s no reason not to check them regularly, since it’s a very simple process. Turn on the headlights. Check park lamps; high and low beam lamps and the license plate light. If equipped with fog or driving lamps, inspect them. Examine the turn signals (all four corners) and follow up with an inspection of the emergency flashers. Back up against a wall where you can see the lights, apply the foot brake and check the brake lights. Place the vehicle in reverse (with the park brake on) and check the backup lights. If any bulbs are burned out, or if there is a lighting problem, it’s obviously time to repair. And the repairs aren’t that difficult or expensive.

Car TalkRe: Brake Fluid. Are DOT3 & DOT4 Good Enough? by autoselect(op):
the DOT 3 goes for 350 while the DOT 4 goes for 450 each
Car TalkBrake Fluid. Are DOT3 & DOT4 Good Enough? by autoselect(op): 3:07pm On Aug 08, 2012
For a driver,fewer things are more scary than the feeling of failing brakes.When you’re going 145 and the next corner can be negotiated no faster than 47 mph, a driver must know the brakes will work.Brakes fail because of various reasons,it could be the brake pad material completely wearing away, brake calipers breaking off,or the brake fluid boiled.
The Importance of Brake Fluid
The primary function of brake fluid is to transfer the force the driver exerts on the brake pedal to squeeze the brake pads against the rotor. The resulting friction slows the car, if everything works correctly. Thanks to advances in brakes, brake pads and brake fluid, few drivers of passenger vehicle drivers must deal with brake fade or failure. But don’t get complacent: using cheap or aging brake fluid can also be very dangerous.

In many brake fade or failure situations, the brake pads are not the problem but rather it’s the brake fluid. If you’re descending a steep grade with a loaded SUV,braking to a stop on the expressway, or attempting to stop for an unexpected okada rider, the brake discs and pads may reach or exceed 800 degrees Fahrenheit. Brake design keeps much of that heat away from the brake fluid. But if you don’t allow the brakes to cool between applications, lower-quality or old brake fluid can overheat and cause serious problems.

If your fluid is old it’s full of water. As brake fluid ages it attracts water: engineers call it hydroscopic. That moisture boils at 212 degrees and creates pockets of air in your brake lines. Also, bits of rubber from deteriorating seals and other contaminates enter the system. These prevent the brake pads from pressing against the discs as hard as necessary. The moisture, dirt and other contaminates also cause premature failure of internal brake components.

Manufacturers have set boiling-point standards for brake fluids. The most common brake fluids are DOT 3 and DOT 4. Both are usually polyethylene glycol-based. Brand new DOT 3 boils at about 400 degrees. Top quality DOT 4 won’t boil until more than 500 degrees, though the legal minimum is about 450 degrees. That’s more than plenty unless you’re a racing driver or an armed robber on the run grin.

But add about three percent water—which is what the manufacturer does for testing—and the boiling point drops to less than 285 degrees for DOT 3, while DOT 4 falls at barely over 310 degrees. Performance wise,this is more than acceptable for the average driver even in emergency situations.

If your car came with DOT 3, it’s okay to upgrade to DOT 4, though DOT 3 is just fine for the vast majority of drivers. But if your car came with DOT 4, use only DOT 4 fluid. Both DOT 3 or DOT 4 work fine with most disc or drum brakes and anti-lock braking systems (ABS).

There are a couple of other grades of brake fluid: DOT 5 and DOT 5.1. DOT 5 is silicone based and offers extremely high boiling points. However, DOT 5 doesn’t play well with DOT 3, 4 or 5.1, as well as some original-equipment brake system components and is mostly used by Formula1 and track-racing engines.

Synthetic, non-silicone brake fluids—called DOT 5.1—offer boiling points (500 dry and 356 wet) exceeding DOT 5, and are fully compatible with DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids.
What this means for the average driver is:

- Top quality brake fluid is good insurance;

- If you open a brake fluid container, put the fluid in the car immediately or as soon as possible

- Clean off the area around the brake fluid reservoir before adding fluid;

- Regularly check the brake fluid level. As brake pads wear, more brake fluid must be added;

- If you notice a “spongy” feeling pedal, you need to check your brakes;

- Rapidly dropping brake fluid level (or brake fluid puddles under your car) signals a serious problem and should be addressed immediately;

- Renewing brake fluid (mechanics call it flushing) every couple of years can extended life of internal brake components and improve emergency stopping performance.

Brake fluid: Few think about it until it’s far too late. Separate yourself from the crowd.

In combustion, fuel and oxygen is required. It is very important that the engine is able to EASILY obtain CLEAN air.
The air from the atmosphere contains lots of abrasive particles and must be removed by the filter before entering the system.
As the car ages, the air filter gets clogged up with these particles and have to be removed.
This is probably the easiest maintenance a home mechanic can do.
Basically you have to remove the air filter form it's housing and replace it with a new one.

lekushious: Wow, this is actually very educational. I thought all along that any part that is not branded by the car manufacturer is fake. So some aftermarket parts are even better than the OEM? Interesting.....
Exactly, some aftermarket part manufacturers actually take the original OEM part, reverse engineer it and remove defects which results in an improved version. This is the reason many aftermarket parts have become world class brands i.e they simply perform better than OEM. For instance Fram filter is the most popular brand of oil filters in the US sold widely in auto parts stores.

Car TalkWhat Is The Difference Between OEM And Aftermarket Auto Parts? by autoselect(op):
OEM parts are Original Equipment Manufacturer parts.This means it is a vehicle part made by the car manufacturer. Many automotive companies also use outside manufacturers to design and produce the parts used on the vehicle and then the dealer adds their logo and packages it in their custom packaging.

Aftermarket parts on the other hand are produced by a different company than the car maker. While these parts are usually made with the same materials and made to serve the same purpose,they may have slight differences in how they look and feel.Some aftermarket parts,due to redesign, may actually be an improvement on the original.

OEM parts tend to be more expensive, but are easier to choose and usually are backed by a one-year warranty.

When you take your car to the dealership's service department, say Elizade, for repairs, you know you're getting Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) car parts. However, if you take your car to an independent mechanic, you'll most likely get aftermarket car parts. Is there anything wrong with that? Does a less expensive part mean a poorer-quality part? And in what situations should you use only OEM parts?

To answer these questions, we've created a list of pros and cons to help you make a more informed decision when choosing what parts go into your car. In this way, you can strike a balance between cost and quality.

Aftermarket Parts

PROS
Less expensive: Aftermarket parts are usually less expensive than OEM parts; how much you save varies by brand.If the price of a part seems too good to be true, ask questions about its quality.

Quality can be equal to or greater than OEM: In some cases, you may end up with a better part than you started with. The aftermarket companies reverse-engineer the part, and work the weaknesses out. For example, when an automaker designs its brake pads, it has to strike a balance between cost, durability, noise levels and performance. If you want better performance and don't mind some extra brake noise (some brake pads squeak even though they are stopping the car effectively), an aftermarket pad may be your best choice.

More variety: There are hundreds of companies that make aftermarket parts. Some specialize in specific parts, and other companies make almost any part you can think of. More variety means greater selection and a wider range of prices. You can walk into any auto parts store or local mechanic, and they're bound to have a part that fits your car. This gives you more options on where to take your car for service.

CONS
Quality varies greatly: The saying "you get what you pay for" rings true here. Some aftermarket parts are inferior because of the use of lower-quality materials. Stick with aftermarket brands you're familiar with or are recommended by a mechanic you trust, even if these parts cost a bit more.

Overwhelming selection: If you're not familiar with aftermarket brands, the selection could be overwhelming, and there's some chance you may get a bad quality part. Even a part as simple as a spark plug can be made by dozens of different companies and comes in numerous variations.

OEM Parts
PROS

Easier to choose your part: If you go to the parts counter at a dealership and ask for any part, you'll usually get one type. You don't have to worry about assessing the quality of different brands and prices.

Greater assurance of quality: The OEM part should work exactly as the one you are replacing. It is what the vehicle was manufactured with and provides a peace of mind in its familiarity and performance.

CONS
More expensive: OEM parts will usually cost more than an aftermarket part.

Need to be bought at the dealership: Even though there are other ways of buying OEM parts, most people will go to a dealership to buy their car parts. This limits the number of places you can buy from.

Quality may not be superior: You paid the extra money for an OEM part, hoping that it was vastly better than an aftermarket part. But that may not always be the case.Some aftermarket parts are equal to or in some cases better than OEM parts. So you might be paying extra just for the name.

When Should You Request OEM Parts?

When it comes to collision repairs, make sure you are getting OEM parts, since aftermarket body panels may not fit properly or have proper crumple zones for crash safety.

Which Is the Best Way To Go?

All aftermarket parts are not created equal — but all OEM parts are. This creates its own set of advantages and disadvantages. If you're familiar with a number of brands or work on your own car, aftermarket parts can save you a lot of money. If you're not familiar with aftermarket brands, prefer to have everything done at the dealership and don't mind paying a bit extra for that peace of mind, OEM is a good choice for you.

AutosWhat Type Of Coolant Should I Use? by autoselect(op): 6:11pm On Jul 12, 2012
There are a lot of coolant types to choose from when you go to a well stocked auto parts store, so which one works best in your car? The simple answer is, well, simple: use what came in your car. However, sometimes it may be difficult to decipher what the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) used, especially if you purchased your car used,which is mostly the case in the Nigerian society.
In the spirit of trying to keep this often times confusing subject simple, we will review the three basic types of automotive coolant: Inorganic Acid Technology (IAT), Organic Acid Technology (OAT), and Hybrid Organic Acid Technology (HOAT).
IAT coolants are the "traditional green" variety used in virtually all vehicles from the late 1920s to the mid to late 1990s. Like all antifreeze, it is naturally clear; its color comes from dye. Unlike the other types of antifreeze, it uses silicate and phosphate corrosion inhibitors to protect the metal parts of the engine and cooling system. However, these inhibitors wear out quickly, so IAT type coolants need to be flushed every two years or 30,000 miles.
OAT coolants typically do not use silicate and phosphate corrosion inhibitors. Different manufacturers use different chemical additives to battle rust and corrosion, and they all dye their coolants different colors. GM's ubiquitous DEX-COOL coolant is an OAT antifreeze dyed orange. Toyota, Volkswagen, and Audi all use their own formulas that happen to be dyed pink. Honda uses a dark green dye. OAT coolants have longer service lives than IAT coolants, needing to be flushed every 5 years or 150,000 miles.
HOAT coolants use different additives than OAT, but also use some silicate to protect aluminum surfaces. Modern Ford, Chrysler, and most European vehicles use their own HOAT coolant formulas. Ford's is dyed yellow and Chrysler's is orange (not to be confused with DEX-COOL). Both use the marketing name of GO-5. HOAT coolant has the same service interval as OAT (5 years or 150,000 miles).
Although you can mix coolant types without harm, it is highly recommended that you only mix other coolants with coolants specifically designed to mix with all antifreeze/coolants of all types,Prestone antifreeze/coolant is just the type of coolant for that.
Prestone Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant is compatible with ANY antifreeze/ coolant – regardless of color – for use in ALL makes and models of cars and light duty trucks. This patented formula provides a high degree of performance durability and carefully balanced protection against temperature extremes and rust corrosion of all cooling system metals, including aluminum.
