PoliticsLabour Leaders Stoned In Jos While Trying To Mobilize Protesters by Azujabeel(op): 9:33am On May 18, 2016
Some members of the Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) were, on Tuesday, May 17, 2016, stoned at the Terminus Market in Jos, Plateau State while trying to mobilize traders for a strike scheduled to hold today, May 18.
The labour leaders were said to have been attacked while urging the traders not to open their shops today due to the planned strike, according to Daily Trust.
Some youths in the area reportedly gathered around the union members while they were speaking and threw stones at them while chanting in Hausa, ‘Karya kukeyi,’ meaning, ‘You are telling lies’.
The NLC had insisted on going on strike today despite an order from the National Industrial Court suspending the action.
The union decided on the industrial action after failing to reach a resolution with the Federal Government on the recent increase in fuel price.
The labour leaders are said to be demanding a total reversal to N86 after the government increased the price per litre to N145.
The government is however reportedly proposing a reduced price of N120.
The fuel price was increased after the government ended the fuel subsidy regime.
