Former Federal Commissioner of Information, Edwin Clark has said that President Muhammadu Buhari is capable of leading Nigeria. Clark, a loyalist of former President, Goodluck Jonathan further urged Nigerians to support Buhari. The former commissioner made the comments on Wednesday, June 3, 2015, when he received a group, known as Probity Ambassadors Organisation of Nigeria in Abuja. “I have congratulated President Buhari and today, he is our President. He’s not the President of a section of the country. Buhari is fit for the job and he’s capable of leading us. We will support him,” Clark added. “Campaigns are over and a winner has emerged. We must come together after the election and give our support to the President. The loser of the election, who had all the powers to do and undo, came out to congratulate the President. That action of the former President is the best thing that has happened in this country,” he added. Clark had previously said that Buhari was incapable of ruling a democratic state and also doubted the President’s ability to win elections in Nigeria. |
Outgoing Senate President, David Mark, Thursday, disclosed that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, will not contest the Senate presidency with the ruling All Progressives Congress. Mark, who has been leading the Upper Chamber of the national assembly since the last eight years, said the contest for presiding officers in the 8th Senate was for senators-elect under the umbrella of the APC only. The senator, who represents Benue Zone C, made this disclosure while responding to a campaign carried out on the floor of the Senate by the outgoing Minority Leader, Senator George Akume, seeking his (Mark) support for his ambition to become the next deputy senate president. Akume, who lauded the outgoing senate president’s matchless qualities, had publicly asked that he be supported, given that they were not just brothers but from the same Benue State. Akume asked Mark him to make the people of Benue proud by supporting and helping to actualize the aspiration of Senator Ahmad Lawan as Senate President and himself as the Deputy Senate President respectively in the 8th Senate. In his response, Mark said: “Finally, because Senator Akume also thanked me, let me thank him and remind him that we are in PDP and election of any coming member is the matter for APC not for PDP" Source: http://dailypost.ng/2015/06/04/pdp-wont-contest-senate-presidency-with-apc-david-mark/

The 5th Assembly is expected to round off their constitutional obligations as legislators to usher in the 6th Assembly that constitute 24 members. The Clerk of the State House of Assembly, Don Pedro Irokansi, had indefinitely suspended the inauguration of the 6th Assembly scheduled to hold on June 8, 2015. In their reactions, the Abia State APGA Chairman, Augustine Ehiemere, and the party’s State Secretary, Sunday Onukwubiri, noted that it is unconstitutional and an act of illegality. They called on the Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, to tow the right path and ensure that the 6th House of Assembly is inaugurated as scheduled. The public announcement attributed by the Clerk of the Assembly had stressed that the winner from Isiala Ngwa South State Constituency has not been issued with the Certificate of Return by the INEC but the excuse was not acceptable by the APGA, adding that they wondered what the governance would look like without the legislative arm. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Spokesman, Edwin Enabor, has also explained that the INEC office at the Isiala Ngwa South Local Government was gutted by fire, and this affected the original statement of result for the State House of Assembly. Mr Enabor added that the commission in Abuja had recently approved to send a substitute statement of result to enter the result of election. He also gave the assurance that INEC was tidying up the process to ensure that the winner of the Isiala Ngwa South Constituency gets the Certificate of Return as soon as possible. Meanwhile an Umuahia based lawyer, Barrister Nnamdi Eluwa, said that the announcement made by the Clerk, to postpone the inauguration is sustained, observing that it would amount to constitutional crisis. For now, APGA has about 11 seats and the People Democratic Party (PDP) has 12 seats and fingers are crossed to wait for the final outcome, whether or not the sixth house would be inaugurated as scheduled.
