Attorney Itamar Ben Gvir submitted an emergency request on behalf of Jewish/Israeli Temple Mount activists Arnon Segal and Yehuda Etzion on Monday to Israel’s Supreme Court. The request demanded that they, and Jews in general be allowed onto the Temple Mount which was closed due to Health Ministry regulations.

The signatories commit to observing all Health Ministry regulations including social distancing.

The letter sites the fact that Muslims are allowed onto the open areas of the Temple Mount and therefore, Jews should be granted the same type of access. Additionally, other Jewish holy sites like the Western Wall and Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai’s tomb have reopened while the Temple Mount remains closed off.

An EU-led fundraising extravaganza for Covid-19 vaccines, treatments and diagnostics fell just short of the European Commission’s €7.5 billion goal on Monday — even after organizers decided to count money already spent or allocated.

But an even bigger challenge for world leaders could be keeping a pledge to fight the pandemic without fighting each other.

Russia and the United States, onetime superpower rivals in science as well as politics, pointedly did not participate, highlighting the real risk that some wealthy countries could look to control vaccines or treatments to benefit their own citizens first.

Even as there were serious questions about how much of the €7.4 billion in pledges represented new resources to be deployed in the battle against the virus — including about the EU’s own €1.4 billion commitment — Commission President Ursula von der Leyen hailed the fundraising event as a landmark victory in global cooperation.

Perhaps there’s no country in the world where the novel coronavirus has had more of an immediate political impact than Israel. What three elections in barely a year could not accomplish — the formation of a government — a virus could.

But Covid-19 had help from a patriotic and risk-averse Benny Gantz, who ran last year, as leader of the Blue and White party, against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his Likud party.

Gantz handed Netanyahu a near-perfect arrangement that will allow him to remain the most powerful political figure in Israel for the next 18 months, if not beyond.

Unlike for most leaders in the world, for Netanyahu Covid-19 presented both a challenge and an opportunity. He rose to the first and exploited the second.

Amid a growing coronavirus epidemic in Italy, Pope Francis has taken ill, forcing the cancelation of his appearance at mass.

The pontiff had participated in the annual Ash Wednesday mass during which several congregants were wearing face masks, but there appeared to be no coronavirus precautions taken. Prior to the service, he did a “Popemobile” tour of St. Peter’s Square and was seen hugging members of the public and even kissed a baby.

But about midway through the service—although Vatican television cut away—Pope Francis was photographed coughing into his hand. Later, he was photographed blowing his nose while sweat was forming on his forehead. He also had to be helped up to his seat.

This morning, the 83-year-old pontiff was scheduled to lead a Lenten mass with priests from the Rome diocese at the Basilica of St. John’s in Lateran—roughly 4 miles southeast of St. Peter’s Square. The Vatican released a brief statement saying the cancelation was due to a “slight ailment” and that the pope would be staying at his residence.

Spokesman Matteo Bruni said all of the pope’s other commitments for the day would go on as scheduled.

Pope Francis is not in the best of health. He lost part of a lung in his youth after suffering from tuberculosis. He also suffers from sciatica, for which he receives regular physical therapy treatments.
