Argentina's 36-year quest for the largest football trophy came to an end last week in Qatar thanks to Lionel Messi, who guided his country to a third World Cup victory. By finally realizing his childhood dream of winning the FIFA World Cup, Messi entered the pantheon of greats.

The total prize money for teams that participated in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar adds up to $440 million.
There were 32 teams at Qatar – 13 countries from Europe, five African teams, four North American countries, four countries from South America and six countries from Asia.
The teams that exited the World Cup at the group stage – Costa Rica, Serbia, Cameroon, Ghana, Uruguay, Denmark, Tunisia, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Qatar, Ecuador, Wales, Iran, Mexico, and Saudi Arabia – all earned $9 million each
The countries that reached the last 16 – Spain, Japan, Switzerland, South Korea, USA, Senegal, Australia, and Poland – all earned $13 million each
The quarter-finalists – Brazil, Netherlands, Portugal, and England – earned $17 million each.
Fourth-place team Morocco earned $25 million
Third-place team Croatia receive $27 million in prize earnings..
The runner-up at the Qatar 2022, France earned $30 million, while the winner of the trophy Argentina received $42 million.
This is an increase of $40m compared to the 2018 tournament.

The knockout stage of semi final for Qatar 2022 World Cup between France & Morocco started with full attacking forces.

Lovely play through the midfield by Morocco. As usual, it starts with Sofyan Amrabat and substitute Selim Amallah advances the attack, almost finding the throughball to Youssef En-Nesyri. Overall, its been a pretty good response to going behind from the Atlas Lions.

France have dropped back incredibly deep and Morocco are happy to push them back even further.

Boufal gets in behind but Griezmann clears the cross. At the moment, he is the only French player who is in the game.


It’s a sad end for Romain Saiss, who hobbles off. Morocco’ gamble on their skipper and Nayef Aguard has not paid off. Selim Amallah comes on and that should mean a switch to a more familiar 4-3-3 for Regragui’s side.

Attiat-Allah gets down the left side and puts a low pass across the face of goal, En Nesyri waiting. Konaté comes in a hacks the ball away. What a performance so far from the centre-back.

Morocco need to settle down a bit here. Sofyan Amrabat just carelessly gave the ball away inside his own half.

As was the case early on against England, France are pressing judiciously and setting traps. 1-0 is a bad situation for the Atlas Lions but 2-0 at this juncture would feel close to irretrievable.

Mbappé goes to ground in the box but there’s no foul. The Frenchman clashed with Bono after Griezmann played a pass into the space behind the defence.

World champions France ensured that it’s certainly not coming home with a hard-fought 2-1 win over England in their quarter-final, and now just two games stand in their way of becoming the first side since Brazil in 1962 to successfully defend their World Cup crown. Never doing things the easy way, France are the only side left in the tournament yet to record a clean sheet, falling behind or conceding an equaliser in four of their five games!
Les Bleus have some incredible attacking talents to thank for their progression to this stage with Kylian Mbappé (G5, A2) and record-breaking scorer Olivier Giroud (G4) making 11 goal contributions between them. French boss Deschamps admitted that his side “got lucky” against England and he may need yet another slice of luck after France lost three of their last six World Cup games against African nations, including a 1-0 defeat to Tunisia in this edition!


No matter what happens now, Morocco have made history at this tournament by becoming the first African nation to make it to the semi-finals of a World Cup. Morocco have already knocked out two giants of European football in the knockout phase with a penalties win over Spain preceding a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Portugal in the quarter-final, results which prompted boss Walid Regragui to brand Morocco the “Rocky of this World Cup”.
That film reference seems like a fair assessment considering Morocco have been outsiders in all but one of their five World Cup games, the 2-1 win over Canada. Solid defensive play and great game management have been hallmarks of Morocco’s unlikely success story at this tournament, a statement backed up by the fact that no opposition player has scored past them in nine straight internationals.

Perisic fancies his chances from a free-kick from distance and goes for power, but Martinez manages to gather. It was well struck, but a bit too ambitious.

First change for Argentina as Lisandro Martinez comes on for Leandro Paredes. They’ve made the cardinal sin of a substitution just before defending a set-piece there and an unseemly scramble ensured. Dejan Lovren probably should have scored.

Griezmann out there on the left side and he delivers a superb cross that Giroud gets onto to with the head just a fraction ahead of Harry Maguire and it is thundered into the net. No stopping that.

Harry Kane goes down just on the line of the penalty area, but after a lengthy VAR check, Brazilian referee Wilton Sampaio waves play on.

There was also an alleged foul in the build-up to France’s goal which wasn’t reviewed by the on-field official.
