We know the difference between great respect (reverence) and worship. And reverence is very short lived and always expires once it's been given.

And it is not given to statues ONLY LIVING PERSONS hence why you said "greeting someone..."

You are supposed to pray ”to” Jesus
We pray ”through” the saints because of what we feel they represent
Catholics believe the saints are in Heaven with God
So they give their intentions and prayers to them to present before God for quick answers
Also I think you guys are blowing this thing out of proportion because Catholics pray more directly to God than through saints or statues

It’s just like when you’re greeting someone greater,older,richer than you, you bow as a sign of respect or curtesy
So you bow not to worship but bow to pay respect

Also you don’t ”pray to” Mary or Joseph or any of the saints you pray through them because you believe they are in heaven so they can drop your prayers and petitions directly at the feet of God
