It was a black Wednesday for the family of Mr. John Nwabufo of Nkwelle-Ezunaka in Oyi Local Government Area of Anambra State as a generating set reportedly set his family house ablaze, with the man and his wife, Ndidiamaka, and six children managing to escape death by the whiskers. According to a source, trouble started for the family when one of the sons allegedly carried a lantern close to the generator, which ignited a fire that engulfed the entire house. The source said soon after the outbreak, Nwabufo, a bed-ridden, partially blind man, was evacuated alongside his wife and children through the window by sympathisers. One of the eyewitnesses, Chief Vincent Anyakora, who is also the chairman of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, in the area, said the incident occurred in the wee hours when the family members were still asleep. He said: “The family was still asleep when the house caught fire and neighbours started shouting, which made the entire residents to storm the place and rescue them. “The entire building had caught fire when the rescuers came and they had to break the window from where the blind man, his wife and their six children were rescued. “If not for God, their father, who is partially blind and had been bed-ridden for years now, and his entire family would have been wiped out by the fire. “You can see the generator that caused the trouble; it is completely burnt and every property was burnt, except only the family members who were rescued alive.” Also speaking, the elder brother to the blind man who lost his house, Mr. Jacob Nwabufor, said: “My brother is currently staying in my house after losing his house and every other thing he had on earth to the fire and cannot start life afresh unless the state government and good spirited individuals and group come to his aid. “His wife, Ndidiamaka, has fled the community until after some days to enable the women clear the ashes. That is our tradition.” Eyewitnesses, Mrs. Catherine Unegbu and Madam Patience Abadom regretted that officials of the fire service did not respond to calls. |
Aba—Tragedy struck in Hospital Road, Aba, Abia State, Monday, as a man identified as Uba Okoroafor stabbed his sister in-law to death and committed suicide thereafter. Vanguard gathered that Okoroafor stabbed his sister-in-law, whose name was simply given as Oyidiya, because she stopped him from going out because of the state of his health. When he realised the gravity of his action, he also stabbed himself in the chest and fell off from the building to the ground where he died. Police sources told Vanguard that the DPO of Ndiegoro Police Division, Superintendent of Police Crescent Mamah, where the incident took place, deployed his men who conveyed Oyidiya to a nearby hospital, where she was confirmed dead by doctors. When Vanguard visited the area, family members were in a mourning mood, wailing over the fate that befell them. Spokesman of Abia State Police Command, DSP Ezekiel Onyeke, confirmed the incident, saying investigations into the incident had begun. |

This post contains facts about the Nigerian Civil War that young Nigerians may not know about. This post is not exhaustive in anyway and no post ever will, but attempts will be made to post more 'little-known' facts about the Civil War later. The initial plan was to create states in the Eastern Region only. The plan was shelved because it considered unwise, and 12 States were created throughout the country on 27 May 1967. Prior to the war, the North had the absolute majority within the rank and file of the Army because of the ethnic quota system. The letters of the name of Head of state of Nigeria, GOWON, came to mean "Go On With One Nigeria" during the war. The Biafra Army conducted a training exercise codenamed “Exercise Checkmate”. This exercise was so realistic as the Nigerian Army reacted exactly the way Biafrans expected them to. Their enemies were not new to them; many Biafran officers were in the Nigerian Army before the war. "Red Devil" tanks were the improvised armoured vehicles of the Biafran Army. They were created by the ingenuity of Biafran engineers. They were dangerous and cumbersome. They were easy targets for anti - tank recoilless weapons during the war. Patrick Chukwuma ‘Kaduna’ Nzeogwu, the leader of the first military coup in Nigeria, was killed by Nigerian forces while using one during the war. The Nigerian soldiers enjoyed rapid promotion and pay increase throughout the war. The Nigerian Government imported some pretty sophisticated weapons that could not be maintained. Many had to be discarded only after a few months. Lt. Col Steiner was a ‘mercenary’ (put in quotation marks because he reportedly fought without pay) for Biafra. He had confrontations with his Biafran commanders, and he was arrested and deported. Logistics was poor, especially on the Nigerian side. After the war, the Army School of Logistics was upgraded to produce highly skilled logisticians. Wole Soyinka (would later become a Nobel laureate) visited the Eastern Region Military Governor Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu in Enugu in August 1967 to try to avert war. The Gowon regime put him in solitary confinement for nearly two years because of this. He was released after the war. In 1966, a plane carrying weapons allegedly ordered by Eastern Region Military Governor Lt. Col. Ojukwu crashed over the Cameroun Mountains. General de Gaulle of France openly acknowledged ongoing support that his country had been giving Biafra. Many Russian MIG jets of the Nigerian Government were flown by Egyptian pilots during the war. Akanu Ibiam, Governor of Eastern Region from December 1960 to January 1966, returned his knighthood in protest against the British government's support of the Nigerian federal government during the civil war. He also changed his name from Francis Ibiam to Akanu Ibiam. Posted by Brianero24 |
Enugu— A 10-year-old boy was allegedly buried alive by suspected occultic men in Ngwo, Enugu State. The discovery was made during a three-day fasting and prayer crusade organised to cleanse the community of evil. Vanguard gathered that the boy was allegedly abducted along Independence Layout axis. However, a Catholic priest from Abia State, Reverend Father Modestus Chilaka, invited by elders to assist in cleansing the land, rescued the boy. At press time, it was not known whether the boy had been reunited with the parents; or his whereabouts. State Police Command’s spokesman, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, told Vanguard: “I am not aware of the incident, but I will check. “Maybe it happened and it was not reported. I will get back to know if I have the details.” However, the traditional ruler, Ogwugwu Ebenebe 1 of Ameke Ngwo, Igwe Jerome Okolo, said: “I was here and I saw a small boy who was buried alive as a sacrifice. “The priest said there was such thing happening and they have buried a boy for rituals. “He prophesied and said he will go there and rescue him. He went and they rescued the boy and brought him to this ground and everybody saw him.” |
