*Security Architecture: Obaseki commits to strengthening fire service agency for efficient emergency response* *...to fine-tune synergy with FG on capacity building, emergency response strategy* Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that his administration is committed to supporting the State Fire Service to enable the agency procure equipment and train personnel for effective management of fire emergencies, as part of the state's new security architecture. The governor disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the Controller-General of the Federal Fire Service to Government House, Benin City, Edo State. He said his administration is ready to invest in the State Fire Service which needs equipment, support, training and other logistics to effectively discharge its responsibility. According to him, "If I have money to invest in fire service, I will invest in my own fire service which needs equipment, support, training and logistics to make the service effective. We are building the state security architecture and the fire and ambulance services are key components." Obaseki said his administration is determined to collaborate with the Federal Fire Service in the area of capacity building, training, organising the State Fire Service, and coordinating fire response in the state, noting that the state requires the Federal Government's support rather than the state financing a federal government agency. "We know you have areas you can assist, which include capacity building, training of personnel and organisational ability to organise our domestic fire service as the state doesn't have enough money to invest in the Federal Fire Service," he said. Earlier, the Controller-General of Federal Fire Service, Engr. Joseph Garba Anebi said the aim of establishing the Fire Service in the country is to minimise the damage of uncontrolled fire outbreaks in the environment. Anebi, who was represented by Deputy Controller-General, South-South Zonal Command of the Federal Fire Service, Chika Njoku, said the Federal Fire Service wishes to expand her service in the areas of fire prevention, training, awareness creation and firefighting. He requested for office space as the Federal Fire Service is currently operating from the Federal Secretariat Complex, which he said, has no adequate provision for quick response to fire outbreaks and other related emergencies. *Edo PDP: Leave Obaseki out of your campaign of slander – Gov’s aide* The Edo State Government has warned the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to leave Governor Godwin Obaseki out of their ‘predictable and cheap smear campaign,’ urging them to focus on the weighty issues that impact on the lives of the people. In a statement by Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, the state government cautioned the PDP to, as a matter of civic duty, tell the people what they intend to do for them and not drag the hardworking governor into their smear campaigns. According to the governor’s aide, “It is not hard to see that the PDP has been undone by the fact that they are faced with a purposeful, well-run and transparent government. Hence, they have gone to town with a fictitious story about a non-existent fraud allegation in government that exists only in their imagination. For the records, we make bold to say that the alleged fraud does not exist.” He said that, as a government whose programme is anchored on the development of the state and its people, Governor Obaseki’s administration has the mandate to run an issues-based campaign during this season and keep the people abreast of the numerous developmental programmes that directly impact on their lives. He added, “But as is their stock in trade, the PDP is making spurious allegations about a non-existent fraud, showcasing once again a lack of understanding of governance. “The records are there to show what the Governor Obaseki-led government has done and continues to do for the people of Edo state, from job creation to infrastructural development, investment promotion and industrialisation, which all residents in the state can readily testify to, in the governor’s efforts at repositioning the state for prosperity. That is what we are campaigning with this season.” The governor’s aide advised the opposition to emulate the All Progressives Congress’ (APC) issues-based campaign and desist from the campaign of bile and bitterness. |
*Obaseki inaugurates Advisory, Steering Committee for Edo Health Improvement Programme* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has inaugurated the Edo Healthcare Improvement Programme (HIP) Advisory and Steering Committee, charging members to ensure sustainability of the programme. Speaking during the inauguration of the committee at Government House in Benin City, the state capital, the governor said, “Our emphasis is on the sustainability of the programme because we want to have a healthcare system that goes on forever within the limits of financial, social and environmental resources.” He charged members of the Advisory and Steering Committee to come up with modalities on how the challenges confronting the state's health sector could be tackled, drawing from their professional expertise. “We have so many issues to deal with in our healthcare system, which include the payment for healthcare services, data gathering mechanism, getting Universal Health Coverage and health regulations," he noted. He said the Edo HIP Programme should be structured in such a way that would allow for diversity and flexibility to accommodate all persons irrespective of status, level of income and location. He also charged the committee to come up with modalities to get people to key into the programme and improve access to qualitative healthcare. “Healthcare is not cheap because medical equipment is expensive. So, if we need quality healthcare service, we have to get people to pay for it.” The Edo HIP Advisory and Steering Committee is made up of three sub-committees, namely; Primary Health Care Advisory Committee, chaired by Dr. Julie Erhabor; the Secondary Health Care Advisory Committee, chaired by Dr. Patrick Okundia, and the Health Financing Advisory Committee, chaired by Dr Alex Okoh. Responding on behalf of the Edo-HIP Advisory and Steering Committee members, Dr. Erhabor thanked the governor for the opportunity given them to serve. She also assured of the committee members' commitment to live up to the confidence reposed in them. *2019 polls: Obaseki intensifies campaign for APC candidates, tours Oredo Wards* *…parades achievements, says vote for APC will ensure effective representation* Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki has taken the campaign for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the doorsteps of electorates in the 12 wards in Oredo Local Government Area, with an assurance that a vote for the ruling party will guarantee effective representation of voters at both the state and national levels. Presenting the party’s candidates in the State Assembly, House of Representatives and the Senatorial elections, Obaseki appealed to the electorates to collectively vote for the APC so that they will continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy. He explained that in the last two years, his administration has focused all its attention on governance which has produced the achievements the Edo electorates are currently enjoying. “In the last two years we have concentrated on governance, constructing roads, schools and primary health centres, empowering the youths of the state, and ensuring we provide security and basic amenities to make life easy for our people”. The governor noted that the elections will be won at the unit level and pledged to galvanise the party’s unit leaders to take the party’s achievements to every house and business place in each ward to ensure the party wins resoundingly. “Ward Six is the only ward in the Oredo Council without a primary school, my administration will ensure that this ward gets at least a primary school for now and an ultra-modern health centre to care for the health need of the people,” he assured. He urged the electorates to register for the APC’s social investment programme as the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government, through the Office of the Vice President, will empower traders in the state with trader-moni to boost their businesses, from next week. *‘I’m the Credible Alternative My People Want’ - Idahosa* *Flag bearer of the All Progressives Congress in Ovia Federal Constituency of Edo State, Dennis Idahosa, who is a former a member of the state executive council fields questions from Adibe Emenyonu on his priorities in politics which include human capital development* *Q: You have flagged off your campaigns. How has it been?* It has been wholesome. I am facing a lot of challenges because the election in Nigeria is expensive. God has helped us to reach a lot of families in my constituency. I have been able to put smiles on people’s faces. We have been able to overcome our challenges and we are gaining more momentum. I believe God has a hand in this project. *Q: Okada elders recently endorsed your candidacy. What does that mean to you owing to the fact that it is the stronghold of your opponent?* I cherish the endorsement from Okada Odionwere and the elders in council. They were able to explain the reason I was endorsed to go to the National Assembly and replace their daughter. One was to be very active on the floor to attract a lot of development. The second one is to concentrate on human capital development and the third one is to be accessible to the electorates. In all of these, my opponent has failed. She has never moved any motion during plenary. She is not there when important issues are discussed. She has no respect for the people. My observation is that they are fed up with her. They made up their mind to vote her out of office. They have found the alternative they needed and they see me as the messiah in our constituency. I will not play politics of bitterness but I will concentrate on what will uplift the people. I pray that God brings an end to vote buying in this country so that the people can vote reliable persons into power. *Q: Your campaign slogan is ‘liberation.’ Why did you choose it?* It started in Okada, the hometown of my opponent. The people of Okada cried out to me that their land has been taken from them. They said they have no land to build houses anymore. They said they want to be liberated. I did a forensic analysis of their cries and I asked how the land grabbing came about in Okada. They explained to me and I found out that the father of my opponent has been unfair to the Okada people. I believe that God has brought me to liberate the people of Ovia and I will not rest until it is achieved. *Q: How much support do you get from your party?* The most important thing the party has done for me is to give me the ticket as its flag bearer. The leaders and youths have been very supportive. It is not about finance. It is the moral support that I need. *Q: How much support do you get from your party?* The most important thing the party has done for me is to give me the ticket as its flag bearer. The leaders and youths have been very supportive. It is not about finance. It is the moral support that I need. *Q: Ovia constituency is made up of farmers…* I have been able to work with various communities. I have reached out to farm camps in Ovia and I am working with the local and state government to meet up with their basic amenities. Grading of earth roads in many of the villages has commenced and it is being funded by the local government. The few camps in Okada axis I really worried about was when I saw how they are suffering. To me that was failure and we have been able to address their problems. *Q: Are you not disturbed that the post primaries crisis may affect the APC?* Not at all. In every primary, there are bound to be little crisis but the APC family has been able to address it. We are comfortable that we will win all available seats in Edo South senatorial district. In Ovia, we are getting 73 percent. *Q: How would you tackle unemployment?* The things I will do as a lawmaker is to focus on human capital development. There will be job opportunities for our youths. I will collaborate with both the state and local government and look at areas where opportunities are available. I am already collecting data of my supporters. I want to have a database so that after my victory, I do not need to collect their CVs anymore. I will have skills acquisition centres and support youths to learn skills. Soft loans will be made available to them after their training. The next one is women empowerment. My plan is to use 50 per cent of my salary as empowerment for the women. It will not be a loan but support for little businesses. *Q: You are a successful businessman. Why venture into politics?* As a businessman, I was able to support people but it was not enough to carry majority of the people’s challenges and I felt that venturing into politics would give the room for more opportunities to meet their need and empower a lot of people. I am so passionate about helping people because I prayed to God when I was 11 years to bless me so that I will be a blessing to my generation. *Q: You worked with Oshiomhole and now Obaseki is in power. How do you compare both men?* Oshiomhole is a great man and Obaseki is a wonderful man. Both of them brought the needed development to Edo. Oshiomhole is a fighter and he will do it openly. Obaseki is a silent fighter and he talks less but has vision and target for the people. Oshiomhole is one of the best governors we have seen before Obaseki. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2019/01/03/im-the-credible-alternative-my-people-want/?amp |
*Obaseki moves against BEDC-induced darkness in Edo with Ossiomo-CCETC 55MW Power project* *_…phase 1 to be commissioned in April_* In a bold move to free Edo people and residents from the stranglehold of the inefficient Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and undo the endless cycle of darkness foisted on electricity consumers in the state, Governor Godwin Obaseki on Wednesday, visited the 55 Megawatts CCETC-Ossiomo Power plant as the facility prepares to commence operation. Addressing journalists after inspecting facilities and progress of work at the CCETC Clean Power/Ossiomo Power Plant, in Ologbo, near Benin City, Obaseki said the first phase of the project will be commissioned in April and would make more electricity available for distribution in the state. He said the construction of transmission lines to deliver the power from the site to the city centre would soon commence, as the first set of equipment for the project would arrive from China in the first quarter of this year. According to him, “We believe that before the end of the first quarter of the year, the first 5MW would be delivered to light up government offices and streets within the Sapele Road corridor of Benin City.” He explained that “to ease distribution of the power, a substation would be set up around Kings Square, which would power streets in the city.” The governor added: “We are concluding transaction to light up 200 Kilometres of our streets across the city. When the plant is completed, it will free up some electricity for the state. We believe that if the megawatts produced increase, the distribution company will have more power to distribute to other cities in the state. "The ordinary Edo people will benefit from this power arrangement because there is an arrangement to drop power in certain processing centres where artisans can move into and do their businesses with the assurance of steady power supply.” Director, CCETC Clean Energy/Ossiomo Power Plant, Dr. Uwa Igiehon, said the power plant is a joint venture between a Chinese Company, CCETC Clean Energy and Ossiomo Power to build a 55Megawatts plant in the state. He said the power plant started in August 2018 https://www.instagram.com/p/BsJD7dsnVeu/?utm_source=ig_share_sheet&igshid=1rx10e7fcjeme

*Edo residents mark peaceful Christmas* *…as Obaseki berates BEDC* Residents of Edo State have applauded the peaceful and serene atmosphere in which they marked Christmas festivities, hailing the state government for various initiatives that made the celebrations pleasurable. A cross-section of residents in the state, who spoke with journalists, said that the celebrations went on peacefully, owing to the proactive stance of the state government, the Edo Police command and other stakeholders, who ensured that the celebrations were marked in a serene atmosphere. This is as the State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, berated the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), for throwing the state into darkness, even with the festivities, noting that the company has proven to be grossly inefficient. Mrs. Irene Igbinosa, a resident in Benin City, said that the celebrations have been pleasurable, as the state has been peaceful and serene. According to her, “The Christmas this year has been quite good. The atmosphere is cheerful; we are having the Igue Festival in peace, and a number of events across the city center is going on without hassles. I appreciate the state government for a number of initiatives this season. These include the new security architecture, which has deterred criminals from taking over the streets.” Mr. Osaro Omozuwa said that though heavy traffic is a reoccurring incident during the festivities, the state government’s decision to open a new car park at the city centre and the restriction on parking has helped ease the situation this year. “We are quite excited to see the way things are going in Benin City. There would have been a lot of traffic but we are seeing less of that this year because the state government has been quite proactive,” he said. Calling for the withdrawal of BEDC's license due to their ineffective service in the state, Obaseki said Edo people deserve a better service provider than BEDC, especially as the state is home to 700mw-capacity Azura Power plant. “At a time families should be enjoying uninterrupted electricity supply as they celebrate Christmas and New Year in the state, BEDC is again unable to live up to the minimum expectation of providing electricity. “No excuse is good enough for the abysmal failure of BEDC and we appeal to President Muhammadu Buhari to without delay, revoke the operational licence of BEDC and rescue Edo people and residents from the crappy service being delivered to our people who are harassed weekly by BEDC to pay for electricity that it did not supply,” Obaseki said. |
*Esan professional lauds Obaseki’s developmental strides in Open Letter* *…says governor developing Ekpoma in line with Ambrose Alli's vision* With more roads in Edo Central Senatorial District being reconstructed by the state government, prominent Esan professionals have applauded the Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration for repositioning the state for economic growth. A cross-section of the professionals, who aired their opinions on the developmental strides of the governor, said that they were impressed with the governor’s style of governance as well as the even spread of development across the state. A prominent Esan professional, Barr Ehis Osagiede, praised Governor Godwin Obaseki, for the quality of road projects in the senatorial zone and for opening the area up for economic prosperity. In an open letter, Barr Ehis Osagiede commended Obaseki for the massive road reconstruction completed and ongoing in Edo Central Senatorial Zone, noting, “I write on behalf of the good people of Edo Central, particularly, Esan West Local Government Area, to express our overwhelming gratitude to the governor of Edo State, Mr. Godwin Obaseki.” “Words are not enough to show how grateful we are as a people, as past administrations, especially the one which preceded yours had failed and totally neglected Esan land and did not give us a sense of belonging, so much so that this made us feel like outcast in the Edoid race,” he added. Commending Governor Obaseki's leadership style, Osagiede said, “Over the last few years, the governor has shown bi-partisanship and a great sense of understanding of the concept of equalitarianism, humanity, compassion, love and brotherhood. I remember vividly writing on your Facebook wall, in November 2017, complaining bitterly of how deplorable our roads had become in Ekpoma, annexed with that complaint/plea were terrible images which could at best be described as atrocious. And I recall your words of assurance in response to that post that the roads were going to be fixed, just like a father would assure his son. You could have chosen to ignore my post, but I guess that is not in your person.” He explained, “The feedback I get from the people of Ekpoma, a town where I lived the most of my life, attended my nursery, primary, secondary schools and University, is that, Ekpoma is being transformed, and truly getting back its status of a metropolis which I have always dreamt of and certainly that which Prof Ambrose Alli envisioned for it. It would also interest you to know that, there is nothing that has gladdened my heart as much as getting these feedbacks from Ekpoma.” Barr. Osagiede's Open Letter is coming after political leaders representing Edo Central in Governor Obaseki's administration, described infrastructural development of Edo State since Governor Obaseki assumed office as unprecedented. According to them, “infrastructural projects initiated and completed, with some ongoing, in Esan Land include 21 roads with a total length of 18.4km through which 2,680 persons have been employed.” They listed the road projects to include asphalt overlay on the 1350-metre Ikinago Ujosanle Road, in Opoji, Esan Central Local Government Area for which 580 persons were employed; 960-metre Idumbhokale/Ekhomu Street, Eguare Irrua; 626-metre Eson Street, Eguare, Irrua and 600-metre Ohue Ogene Street, off Idumebo road, Irrua, in Esan Central.” In Esan North East, the political leaders listed the following projects: asphalt overlay/drain construction/kerbs on the 600-metre Efadion College Road (Oyeribhor), for which 360 persons were recruited directly; 580-metre Deeper Life Bible Church Road, Uromi and 600 metres Bishop Ekpo Street, Uromi, among others in Esan South East, Esan West and Igueben Local Government Areas. |

*250 youth graduate from EdoJobs, Genius Hub entrepreneurship training* Not less than 250 young persons have graduated from an entrepreneurship training programme organised by the Edo State Government’s skills development platform, EdoJobs and Genius Hub, a private partner. The trainees, drawn from the state’s three senatorial districts, underwent not less than two weeks of immersive training on catfish production, soap and perfume production, cosmetology and bead production. Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Skills Development and Jobs Creation, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, disclosed this in a chat with journalists during the graduation ceremony held at Edo Innovation Hub, in Benin City, the Edo State capital. She said that the training programme is in line with Governor Godwin Obaseki’s promise to create 200,000 jobs before 2020. According to her, “In Edo South, the training held at the Genius Hub office, in Oredo Local Government Area. For Edo Central, it held at Igueben Local Government Area. The training comprised of skills development in cosmetology (perfume production), bead production and catfish production in Edo South as well as soap and perfume production in Edo Central.” Director of Genius Hub, Mrs. White Isimeme, said that the organisation collaborated with EdoJobs on the training because of the state government’s sincerity in creating jobs for youths and ensuring that they are self-reliant. *Obaseki assures master bakers of support to boost growth, job creation* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has pledged his administration’s commitment to strengthen partnership with master bakers and caterers as well as other relevant stakeholders in the confectioneries sub-sector to open up space for economic diversification and drive job creation in the state. He made the pledge during a courtesy visit by the Edo State Chapter of the Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, at Government House, in Benin City, Edo State. Obaseki, who acknowledged the role of bakers in boosting food supply chain in the state, noted that beyond feeding the state, the industry has created job opportunities. He assured that through various economic programmes and initiatives, the state government would support the expansion of over 400 bakeries in the state to enhance their capacities to employ more persons, which would enable the industry meet the demand for bread in the state. “We want to work better with you and have a window that allows for regular meetings so that we would know the challenges confronting the 400 bakeries in the state. Electricity is a challenge; we need to find a way out of it and see how we can give soft grants such as the trader-moni to those in the marketing end of the bread production business,” he noted. He said the state’s Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies would work closely with the association to eliminate the sale of substandard bread, adding, “We need to know the people who are bringing the substandard products into the state. We only need you to give us the information and we will apprehend perpetrators.” Obaseki assured the bakers and caterers that the state government is working on harmonising and improving the tax collection system to reduce distractions in their businesses. Earlier, the State Chairman, Association of Master Bakers and Caterers of Nigeria, Benjamin Agbonze, said they are ready to partner with the state government towards actualising the governor’s target of creating 200,000 jobs in the state. He said the association has reported cases of contaminated bread coming from neighbouring states and assured that they will continue to prioritise the safety of bread consumers in the state. “The average shelf life of a good bread is four to five days. Bread from neighbouring states stay more than 14 days, which shows that unwholesome materials are being used, which is very dangerous to the health of our people,” Agbonze added. *Human Trafficking: Obaseki advocates market linkages for returnees, tasks BATN on agric research farm in Edo* …as Foundation completes skills training for 100 returnees The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has called on non-governmental organisations and other stakeholders working with the state government on returnees' reintegration to prioritise market linkages for profitable business ventures such that victims of human trafficking will have the right incentives to steer clear of vices. The governor made the submission when he received executive members of the British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) Foundation, led by the Executive Director, Abimbola Okoya, on a courtesy visit to Government House, in Benin City, Edo State. Obaseki commended the BATN Foundation for their efforts at alleviating the plight of victims of human trafficking, in collaboration with the Edo State Taskforce Against Human Trafficking (ETAHT). He expressed optimism that the parent organisation, the British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN), would consider setting up an agricultural research farm in the state, where youths can be engaged and discouraged from engaging in irregular migration. He said the state government is not oblivious of the fact that not all those who benefitted from skills training would be successfully engaged in entrepreneurial ventures, stressing that equipping them with the right attitude to business and linking them with profitable ventures also form a key part of keeping them away from vices. “Training someone and giving them a starter kit is not a guarantee that they will not go back to being trafficked. Our emphasis is on linking the returnees with opportunities and a ready market so that the training and equipment will provide a means of sustainable livelihood,” he noted. The governor expressed appreciation to the BATN Foundation for taking interest in Edo State and its strategies for curbing irregular migration, urging that only a sustainable approach will guarantee success. Earlier, Executive Director of BATN Foundation, Abimbola Okoya, explained that though they started out with agricultural development programmes, they have taken interest in the returnees’ crisis and are keen on supporting the state government’s efforts to curb the ugly trend. Okoya said the foundation is currently engaged in a campaign, tagged, ‘Wealth is Here’ to encourage returnees to realise that they need not go in search of greener pastures abroad. She said 100 returnees have been trained and would be empowered with start-up kits. |

*BEDC frustrating President's plans on power - Dennis Idahosa* Hon. Dennis Idahosa, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Ovia Federal Constituency in the 2019 general elections has accused the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) of deliberate plan to frustrate the President's plan to improve power supply in the country. Idahosa stated in Benin on Tuesday in reaction to Gov Godwin Obaseki walking out the BEDC boss, Mrs Funke Osibodu, from his (Obaseki) office on Tuesday. NAN reports that the Governor of Edo had walked out Osibodu from his office when she accompanied House of Representatives committee on power on a courtesy call on the governor. The governor said the utility has posed as an obstacle to meeting the goal of proving stable power supply to his people instead of collaborating with the state government. According to him, The BEDC has been an obstacle all the way. They will not provide electricity and will not allow you to get alternative sources of power. The state will not allow it. "As Governor of Edo State, we have lost confidence in BEDC. We don't want them here. We are in darkness. Let us remain in darkness until we find people who are capable of delivering electricity. This is our position." Idahosa said the BEDC who has plunged the state into darkness for over three weeks now, was out not only to frustrate Obaseki's plans to make life comfortable for he people, but also to sabotage President Muhammadu Buhari efforts in the sector. "As it stands, nobody is accusing the BEDC for the darkness that now pervades the entire state, but the president and the state government have been at the receiving end of this whole mess," he stated. He said aside the issue of erratic power supply, the people have also had to contend with the issue of estimated billings from company. The House of Representatives candidate challenged the authority concerned to ensure justice is served the BEDC. Meanwhile, the company have attributes a faulty Transformers of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN)as responsible for the problem of power supply that have effected the state in the past three weeks. Osibodu who disclosed this during senate committee on power visit to the company on Thursday, however said efforts was been made by the BEDC and the TCN to proffer solution to the problem. She also debunked that all of electricity in the state was deliberate on the part of the BEDC. "Our own position is that the more power we can sell the better for us. If some of the TCN limitations are solved, people will smile because they will have 30% extra power. It is not TCN problem alone but the budgetary process," she said.

*Obaseki, Oba of Benin’s efforts on retrieval of Stolen artefacts yielding results* *…as Gov earmarks N500m for Benin Royal Museum* Efforts by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki and the Benin Monarch, Omo N' Oba N' Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, to retrieve artefacts stolen from the state in the colonial era are yielding results as European governments have set modalities in place for either permanent or temporary return of the artworks. Campaign for the return of the prized heritage objects has raged for decades, with Nigerian authorities mounting pressure on European governments and museums to return them, while the Europeans argue that holding the work was best for the preservation of the artefacts, as there were no structures in Africa to properly hold them. However, while presenting the 2019 Budget proposal on Monday before a session of the House of Assembly, Governor Obaseki stressed his intention to make Benin the culture capital of West Africa with the planned return of the artefacts and proposed N500 million for the construction of the Benin Royal Museum, a facility to be constructed in collaboration with the Oba's Palace and the Benin Dialogue Group, a multilateral group of major museums across Europe. Addressing the legislators, he said, “To fulfill our commitment towards making Edo the culture capital of West Africa, we have earmarked N500 million in 2019 proposed Budget, to commence the development and construction of the Benin Royal Museum. This will be done in collaboration with the Palace of His Royal Majesty, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, Ogidigan.” The French government recently approved the return of 26 artefacts stolen from Benin Republic after a report recommended the move, raising the prospect of more of such moves from the European country. After the approval for the return, the Elysée Palace said: “there will be a meeting at the start of 2019 between African and European nations to develop a new policy on the exchange of stolen artefacts.” The French President was quoted as saying that he would ensure that "African youths have access to their heritage objects and the common heritage of humanity in Africa," and assured of "a new intellectual connection between France and Africa." The Benin Dialogue Group, which is a major partner in the construction and management of the Benin Royal Museum, is also working on something similar. It has built a coalition that will set a framework for the European partners to provide advise, as requested, in areas including building and exhibition design, while European and Nigerian partners will work collaboratively to develop training, source funding, and legal frameworks to facilitate the permanent display of Benin artworks in the new museum.” The Benin Dialogue Group consists of museum representatives from Austria, Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden and the United Kingdom with key representatives from Nigeria.

The training is coming barely two weeks after the first detachment of 100 PUWOV members began training, which includes courses on intelligence gathering, relations with security agencies, managing sensitive security information and general security training. Coordinator, PUWOV, Mukhtar Yusuf-Osagie, in a chat with journalists, said that the state government has deployed another batch of PUWOV members to the school to undergo the same training modules. According to him, “We are very impressed with the kind of training that members of PUWOV are getting. In a matter of weeks, members of the public are going to testify to the change that we are instilling in them. They are going to be more courteous and engage very professionally with members of the public.” He noted that the training programme is part of government’s drive to add more than 5000 new members of the PUWOV scheme, stating, “the scheme is going to complement the work of security agencies in the state. We are going to be helping in intelligence gathering and other related security functions so as to combat crime and other social nuisance in the state.” He said the training includes courses on intelligence gathering, relations with security agencies, managing sensitive security information and general security training, noting, “We are confident that after this, the team will be well positioned to carry out the mandate given to them by government.” Recall that Yusuf-Osagie earlier said that the Governor Obaseki led-administration plans to reposition the scheme through manpower training to equip the volunteers in the scheme with the right skills and attitude to deliver on their duties. The volunteers, he added, would be deployed to gather intelligence in their local areas, noting that 250 volunteers were recruited into PUWOV in 2017 to assist in restoring law and order in the state. The state government has reached an agreement with the Nigeria Police Force to provide requisite training on community policing to the volunteers to prepare them to discharge their tasks effectively and help fight crime in the society. *PHOTO CAPTION:* *S3-001:* Public Works Volunteers (PUWOV) officials undergoing training at the Police Training School in Ogida, Benin City, Edo State.

*Leave Governor Obaseki out of your attention-seeking schemes - Crusoe Osagie* Our attention has been drawn to a catalogue of falsehoods attributed to the Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, being circulated on various social media platforms. The faceless promoters of the comment mentioned that the governor, among other things said: “The huge debt I met on ground was so alarming and I think is best for us to see how we can reduce it. This we eventually did.” We are aware that we are in the season of politics, in which desperate politicians resort to unconventional and desperate measures to raise their ratings and pay cheques through the concoction and fabrication of falsehood, moonlighting, image bashing and the likes. We advise the masked promoters of the comment to check elsewhere for their target(s), as Governor Godwin Obaseki is not one to be swayed or distracted by such attention-seeking schemes. As we move closer to the 2019 general elections, we wish to guide administrators of various groups on social media platforms to insist on the basic parameters for gauging the credibility of sources, to retain the confidence of their teeming members. *_Osagie is Special Adviser to Edo State Governor on Media and Communication Strategy_*
