The Guild of Public Affairs Analysts of Nigeria, Enugu State Chapter, has condemned the invasion of Urban Radio in Enugu by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Enugu Zonal Office.

Operatives of the anti-graft agency had reportedly stormed the station during a live programme and arrested, Favour Ekoh, a journalist.

In a statement signed by its chairman Ambrose Igboke, PhD; and Dr. Chikezie Obasi, its secretary, the guild described the development as “a huge infringement on journalistic practice”.

It also demanded investigation into the incident and called on authorities to ensure officers who carried out the invasion are brought to book.

“The Guild of Public Affairs Analyst of Nigeria, Enugu State Chapter, received with dismay, the news of the invasion of Urban Radio in Enugu, by agents of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Enugu Zonal Office. It was alleged that agents of EFCC, in a gestapo style, yanked off Favour Ekoh, a presenter of Urban radio, while she was still presenting on live radio,” the statement reads.

In recent days, a troubling incident involving the Nigerian football team stranded in Libya has raised discussions within the football community. According to a report by IQAir, an organization that measures the Air Quality Index, Nigeria’s 2019 reading of 21.40 μg/m³ put it into the ‘moderate’ ratings bracket for air pollution, which requires a PM2.5 reading of anywhere between 12.1 to 35.4 μg/m³ to be classified as such. DStv and GOtv have now reversed their prices after facing backlash from consumers. This adjustment was reflected on Multichoice’s apps on Sunday, June 16, 2024.

The decision came in response to a previous court judgment mandating Multichoice to revert its prices. Despite compliance, Multichoice argues that the ruling was unfair and has pledged to contest the decision of the Competition and Consumer Protection Tribunal (CCPT) in Abuja, as the company reported a significant decline in its Nigerian subscriber base, resulting in the loss of over a million subscribers.

Recall that on June 7, 2024, the CCPT ruled in favour of consumers who without warning experienced a price hike on the 1st of May, 2024. The tribunal therefore, ordered that subscribers receive one month of free service, citing Multichoice’s violation of an earlier ruling that prohibited any increase in subscription prices for DStv and GOtv packages. This breach led to a fine of 150 million Naira.
