Webmasters › Millions Of Websites Hit By Namecheap Server Outage In US by BureauJournal(op): 4:01pm On Aug 13 |
Namecheap is experiencing a major service disruption after a power outage at its Phoenix datacenter in the United States affected several of the company's hosting, DNS, email and website services.
The disruption began on Thursday, August 13, 2026, with Namecheap announcing emergency maintenance at about 8:35 a.m. Eastern Time.
According to the company's official status update, the power outage is affecting multiple services, including Namecheap.com, shared hosting, VPS, dedicated hosting, EasyWP, DNS infrastructure and email services.
Namecheap Confirms Phoenix Datacenter Power Outage
Namecheap said it is responding to an emergency caused by a power outage at its Phoenix datacenter.
The company warned that websites hosted on affected infrastructure could become slow, inaccessible or return 503 Service Unavailable errors. Customers may also experience difficulties accessing their hosting control panels.
The outage has also affected Namecheap's own website, which the company said was undergoing emergency maintenance while its technical teams worked to restore normal operations.
Websites Hosted on Namecheap May Be Unavailable
The impact is particularly significant for website owners using Namecheap hosting infrastructure.
Namecheap said shared, VPS and dedicated hosting customers may experience network problems, meaning some websites may temporarily become inaccessible.
Customers using EasyWP, Namecheap's managed WordPress hosting platform, may also experience disruptions affecting their websites, dashboards and related infrastructure.
DNS Problems Could Affect Websites
One of the more important aspects of the incident is the reported disruption to Namecheap's DNS infrastructure.
DNS, or Domain Name System, works like the internet's address book. It helps browsers locate the server where a particular website is hosted.
When DNS services become unavailable, users may be unable to reach websites even when the websites' underlying servers are still functioning.
Namecheap said DNS zone resolution and management could be affected during the emergency.
Namecheap Email Services Also Affected
The company also warned customers about possible delays involving Private Email, shared hosting mailboxes, free email forwarding and domain privacy email forwarding.
Namecheap said incoming and outgoing email delivery could be delayed and that sending servers might experience connection timeouts.
However, the company said messages are not expected to be lost and should arrive once sending servers retry their connections after the incident is resolved.
Customers May Also Face Support Difficulties
The disruption has extended beyond hosting and website infrastructure.
Namecheap said its support helpdesk was also experiencing problems, meaning customers could not access live chat at the time of its emergency announcement.
The company advised customers that support remained available through Microsoft Teams and email while the technical problem was being addressed.
What Does the Namecheap Outage Mean for Website Owners?
For ordinary website owners, the incident means that a website can go offline even when there is nothing wrong with the WordPress installation, theme or plugins.
If the hosting server, DNS infrastructure or another critical component provided by the hosting company becomes unavailable, the website may stop loading for visitors.
This is why website owners who depend heavily on a single hosting provider should maintain regular backups and have a recovery plan.
For publishers and businesses that rely on their websites for advertising, sales, customer enquiries or online services, even a temporary outage can result in lost traffic and revenue.
Why Website Backups Matter
The Namecheap disruption is also a reminder that website owners should not depend entirely on their hosting companies for business continuity.
Important website files and databases should be backed up regularly and stored separately from the main hosting account.
Website owners should also ensure they have access to their domain registration information, DNS records, WordPress backups and other credentials needed to recover their websites if their hosting provider experiences a prolonged outage.
Namecheap Working to Restore Services
Namecheap said its technical teams were working to bring affected systems back online as quickly as possible.
The company has not provided a definitive restoration time in its emergency announcement and said it would issue further updates as more information becomes available.
Customers experiencing problems should therefore monitor Namecheap's official service updates rather than relying on unverified claims circulating on social media.
Major Outage Highlights Risks of Centralised Hosting
The incident demonstrates the dependence of modern websites and online businesses on complex infrastructure operated by hosting companies, datacenters, DNS providers and other technology platforms.
A failure at one point in that chain can affect many customers simultaneously.
For website owners, the practical lesson is straightforward: reliable hosting is important, but backups, independent DNS arrangements, disaster recovery planning and access to critical website information can provide an additional layer of protection when a major provider experiences an outage.

Politics › What Tinubu’s $50 Billion Offshore Investment Plan Means For Nigerians by BureauJournal(op): 11:43am On Aug 12 |
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has signed a new policy designed to unlock up to $50 billion in deep offshore oil and gas investment in Nigeria, beginning with the approximately $10 billion Bonga South West project.
For many Nigerians, however, the big question is simple: What does $50 billion in offshore investment actually mean for the ordinary person on the street?
In simple terms, the Federal Government is trying to make it easier and more attractive for major oil companies and investors to put billions of dollars into oil and gas projects located far offshore.
The policy is contained in the Deep Offshore Oil and Gas Projects Incentives (Tax Remission) Order, 2026.
What Has the Government Actually Done?
For years, Nigeria has had large quantities of oil and gas beneath its offshore waters, but some major projects have remained delayed because investors faced uncertainty over taxes, incentives, regulations and the long-term economics of developing the fields.
The new framework is intended to change that.
Rather than negotiating incentives separately for individual projects, the government has created a more predictable set of rules that qualifying deep offshore projects can operate under.
Think of it this way: if an investor wants to spend billions of dollars building an oil project that may take several years before it starts producing, the investor needs to know what the rules will be before committing the money.
The government is therefore saying, in effect: Here are the rules, here are the incentives and here is the period within which qualifying projects can meet the requirements.
For existing deep offshore leases, the framework provides a window to reach a Final Investment Decision by December 31, 2029 and qualify for the applicable standard incentive.
Why Is the Government Offering Tax Incentives?
This is one of the most important parts ordinary Nigerians need to understand.
The government is offering incentives because developing deep offshore oil fields is extremely expensive and technically complicated.
Companies may have to spend billions of dollars on drilling, platforms, subsea equipment, pipelines, vessels, engineering and other infrastructure before they can begin producing oil.
A tax remission or other investment incentive can reduce some of the financial burden on qualifying projects and make investments that might otherwise be delayed or abandoned commercially attractive.
In return, the government expects to get something bigger in the long run: more investment, more oil and gas production, more economic activity, more jobs and increased government revenue from successful projects.
What Does the $50 Billion Figure Mean?
The $50 billion is not a $50 billion cash payment to the Nigerian Government.
This distinction is important.
The figure represents the potential investment that the new framework could help unlock in Nigeria's deep offshore oil and gas sector.
The first major project highlighted by the Presidency is the approximately $10 billion Bonga South West project.
If other qualifying projects also move forward, the total investment attracted under the framework could eventually reach as much as $50 billion.
So, Nigerians should not expect the government to suddenly receive $50 billion in its account.
Instead, the money would largely be invested by oil companies and other participants in developing offshore projects, equipment, services and infrastructure.
How Can This Benefit the Ordinary Nigerian?
This is where the policy becomes more important to everyday Nigerians.
1. More Jobs
Large offshore oil projects require engineers, technicians, welders, fabricators, marine workers, drivers, safety professionals, construction workers, accountants, logistics companies and many other categories of workers.
The President has specifically directed attention towards ensuring that more of the work associated with these projects is carried out in Nigeria where commercially and technically possible.
That means the potential benefit is not limited to people working directly on oil platforms.
A major offshore project can create work for hotels, transport operators, food suppliers, security companies, engineering firms, construction companies, equipment suppliers and other businesses.
2. More Opportunities for Nigerian Companies
The framework places emphasis on Nigerian industrial capacity and local participation.
The Presidency said qualifying projects should maximise execution within Nigeria wherever commercially and technically feasible.
In practical terms, this could mean more contracts for Nigerian engineering companies, fabrication yards, marine service providers, technical companies, logistics firms and other local businesses.
For a Nigerian entrepreneur, the benefit could therefore come indirectly through contracts created by a major oil project.
3. More Skills for Nigerian Workers
The oil and gas industry requires highly specialised skills.
If more offshore projects are developed and more of the work is carried out locally, Nigerian workers could gain experience in areas such as engineering, fabrication, marine operations, project management and other technical services.
This could help Nigeria build a stronger pool of skilled workers rather than depending heavily on foreign expertise.
4. More Business for Local Suppliers
Imagine a major project requiring thousands of workers, equipment, transportation, accommodation, catering, security and technical services.
That creates a large supply chain.
If Nigerian companies are able to participate meaningfully in that supply chain, more money can circulate through the domestic economy.
This is one reason the Federal Government is emphasising Nigerian Content and domestic project execution.
5. Increased Oil and Gas Production
If previously stalled offshore projects eventually become operational, Nigeria could increase its oil and gas production capacity.
Higher production, provided it is commercially viable and managed properly, can translate into greater export earnings and additional government revenue.
For a country that depends heavily on oil and gas revenues, this could strengthen public finances and provide more resources for government programmes.
6. More Revenue for Government
The government may provide tax incentives at the beginning of an investment cycle, but successful oil projects can generate economic returns over many years.
Government revenue can come through applicable taxes, royalties, production-related revenues and increased economic activity, depending on the specific contractual and fiscal arrangements governing each project.
The President said the ultimate test of the policy should be what Nigerians see from it, including increased production and more revenue for the Federation.
7. Stronger Nigerian Businesses
One of the less obvious benefits could be the growth of Nigerian companies capable of handling large international projects.
If local engineering, fabrication, marine and technical companies secure major contracts, they can expand their workforce, purchase equipment, develop expertise and compete for projects beyond Nigeria.
Over time, that could help Nigeria build a stronger industrial base around the oil and gas sector.
Why Bonga South West Is Important
The Bonga South West project is being used by the Federal Government as an important example of what the new framework is intended to achieve.
The project is estimated at approximately $10 billion, meaning its development could generate substantial economic activity if it proceeds to implementation.
Rather than allowing major offshore opportunities to remain stalled for years, the government wants investors to have sufficient certainty to commit the enormous sums required to develop them.
Does This Mean Petrol Will Immediately Become Cheaper?
Not necessarily.
This policy is primarily about attracting investment into deep offshore oil and gas production. It should not be interpreted as an immediate measure to reduce the pump price of petrol or diesel.
Any impact on fuel prices would depend on several other factors, including domestic refining capacity, crude oil production, international oil prices, exchange rates, transportation costs and the structure of the Nigerian petroleum market.
Will Nigerians Immediately Feel the Impact?
Probably not.
Deep offshore projects are long-term investments. They can take years to move from investment decisions to construction and eventually production.
Therefore, the announcement should be viewed as an attempt to create an investment pipeline rather than an announcement of immediate financial benefits for households.
The real benefits will depend on whether the projects actually reach final investment decisions, secure financing, get developed successfully and generate the expected economic activity.
What About the Tax Remission?
This is another issue that deserves careful attention.
Whenever government gives investors tax incentives, there is an understandable question: What is Nigeria giving up?
The answer is that tax incentives can mean that government collects less from a project under certain conditions during the incentive period.
The argument for providing such incentives is that a project that is commercially unattractive may produce little or no revenue if it never happens.
If an incentive makes the project viable and billions of dollars are subsequently invested, the government may benefit from increased production, employment, local contracts and future revenues.
However, the success of the policy will ultimately depend on ensuring that the incentives are properly structured, transparently administered and balanced against Nigeria's long-term economic interests.
What Tinubu Wants Nigeria to Become
The policy goes beyond simply producing more crude oil.
The President wants Nigeria to become a regional centre for deep offshore project execution in Africa.
That means attracting investment while also ensuring that Nigerian engineers, fabrication companies, marine operators, technical service providers and young professionals participate in the projects.
If successfully implemented, Nigeria could gradually move from being primarily a producer of raw petroleum resources to becoming a country with deeper industrial capabilities around the petroleum sector.
The Bottom Line for the Ordinary Nigerian
In everyday language, President Tinubu's new deep offshore policy is an attempt to tell investors: “Nigeria wants your billions, and we are creating clearer rules to make it easier for you to invest.”
But the government is also saying: “When you invest, more of the economic activity should happen here in Nigeria.”
For the ordinary Nigerian, the potential benefits are therefore not simply the headline figure of $50 billion.
The bigger question is what that investment produces.
If the policy succeeds, Nigerians could see more jobs, more contracts for local businesses, greater demand for skilled workers, stronger domestic industries, increased oil and gas production and additional government revenue.
But the benefits will not happen automatically.
The government will have to ensure that the framework is implemented transparently, that Nigerian companies genuinely participate, that projects are completed and that increased revenues are properly managed.
Ultimately, $50 billion in potential investment is only the beginning. The real success will be measured by how much of that investment translates into jobs, businesses, skills, production, government revenue and better economic opportunities for Nigerians.
That is the real meaning of the new deep offshore investment framework. Source: https://thebureaujournal.com/tinubu-50-billion-deep-offshore-investment-benefits-nigerians/@

Politics › 2027: Accord Denies Tinubu Endorsement, Vows To Field Presidential Candidate by BureauJournal(op): 12:05pm On Aug 10 |
By Enemona Samuel EnduranceThe Lagos State Chairman of the Accord Party, Dele Oladeji, has dismissed reports that the party endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for re-election in the 2027 presidential election.
Oladeji, who is also the Secretary of the Forum of Accord Party Chairmen in Southern Nigeria, described the claim as false and contrary to the official position of the party.
He made the clarification on Sunday while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in reaction to comments attributed to Prof. Christopher Imumolen, a factional presidential candidate of the party.
Imumolen had reportedly claimed that Accord was backing President Tinubu for a second term in office.
Accord Says No NEC Approval for Tinubu
Oladeji said no meeting of the party's National Executive Committee had discussed or approved an endorsement of Tinubu ahead of the 2027 election.
According to him, Accord has not deliberated on supporting the President at any of its NEC meetings since preparations for the 2027 general elections began.
“Accord did not and will not endorse Tinubu for a second term. Any person claiming otherwise is playing politics or engaging in anti-party activities,” Oladeji said.
He maintained that the party's official position can only emerge from decisions taken by its constitutional organs and recognised meetings.
Chairman Questions Imumolen's Party Status
The Accord chairman also questioned Imumolen's current membership status, alleging that his name was not contained in the party's current membership register.
Oladeji claimed that the membership register on which Imumolen's name previously appeared had been replaced by a new register introduced by the party's national leadership in 2023.
“His name is not on the Accord membership register, as the register he was on had been phased out,” he said.
He challenged Imumolen to provide evidence of his current membership of Accord as well as proof of participation in recognised party structures and activities.
Oladeji also described Imumolen's reported claim of support for Tinubu as a personal position rather than an authorised decision of the party.
Accord Insists It Will Contest 2027 Elections
Oladeji said Accord remained committed to participating fully in the 2027 general elections and would field candidates across the country.
He said the party planned to contest elections for state Houses of Assembly, governorships, the House of Representatives, the Senate and the presidency.
“Accord candidates will contest every elective position in the country, including the presidential election,” he said.
According to him, endorsing the presidential candidate of another political party would contradict Accord's political objectives and identity.
“Only an unserious person and political party will endorse the candidate of another party. Accord will not do such,” Oladeji said.
Party Urges Members to Ignore Endorsement Claims
The Lagos chairman urged Accord members and supporters to disregard reports suggesting that the party had entered into an agreement to support Tinubu's 2027 re-election campaign.
He reiterated that any official decision concerning the party's presidential candidate or electoral alliances must come through its recognised constitutional structures.
Oladeji maintained that individuals making claims contrary to decisions of the party's authorised organs should not be regarded as representing Accord's official position.
With the 2027 general elections approaching, the clarification adds to the growing political debate over possible alliances and endorsements involving President Tinubu and opposition parties.
For now, Oladeji's position is that Accord intends to remain an independent political platform and contest the 2027 elections at all levels rather than endorse the presidential candidate of another party. Source: https://thebureaujournal.com/accord-denies-endorsing-tinubu-2027/

By Abdullahi TukurGovernor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has reaffirmed his commitment to improving workers' welfare, declaring that his administration will implement any new national minimum wage approved by the Federal Government.
The governor made the pledge while speaking at the Rights of Workers Summit held in Birnin Kebbi, where he noted that Kebbi was the first state in Nigeria to implement a ₦75,000 minimum wage following the expiration of the previous ₦70,000 national minimum wage in July.
Governor Idris Pledges Support for New Minimum Wage
Governor Idris said he would champion the cause of workers at the Nigeria Governors' Forum whenever discussions on a new minimum wage commence, stressing that civil servants remain critical to national development and deserve adequate compensation.
He described workers as the engine room of government and assured them that his administration would continue to prioritize policies aimed at improving their welfare and living conditions.
The governor also disclosed that his administration has spent more than ₦16 billion on retirement and death benefits since assuming office in May 2023, describing the payment of workers' entitlements as a moral obligation.
NLC Opens Negotiations for Salary Increase
Earlier, the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, announced that the labour union had commenced preparations to begin negotiations with the Federal Government and state governments for an upward review of workers' salaries nationwide.
Ajaero, who was represented by the NLC Deputy President, Audu Titus Amba, said the union believes that any new minimum wage below ₦500,000 would be insufficient to address the prevailing economic realities confronting Nigerian workers.
He attributed the demand to the rising cost of living and worsening socio-economic challenges affecting civil servants across the country.
NLC Seeks Dialogue, Not Confrontation
The labour leader stressed that the Nigeria Labour Congress was not seeking confrontation with governments but was merely presenting the concerns and welfare needs of Nigerian workers.
He expressed optimism that both the Federal Government and state governments would give favourable consideration to the union's proposals during the forthcoming negotiations.
The Rights of Workers Summit brought together labour leaders, government officials and stakeholders to discuss strategies for improving workers' welfare and strengthening industrial relations across Nigeria. Politics › 2027: Sultan Denies Endorsing Tinubu, Distances Self From Campaign Rumours by BureauJournal(op): 1:02pm On Aug 05 |
By Queen MadakiThe Sultan of Sokoto, His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, has dismissed reports claiming he endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term ahead of the 2027 presidential election, describing the claims as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by his media team on Tuesday, the revered traditional ruler said the reports circulating on social media were a deliberate attempt to drag his office into partisan politics.
The statement, signed by Bashir Adefaka, stressed that the Sultan, as a father figure to all Nigerians, could not publicly or privately endorse any presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Sultan Rejects Alleged 2027 Endorsement
According to the statement, the reports falsely claimed that the Sultan had urged Nigerians to support President Tinubu's re-election bid.
The media team described the publication as malicious, unpatriotic and aimed at creating unnecessary political controversy around the Sultan's revered office.
"Our simple response to the report is that it is not possible for the Sultan, as the father of all, to make such a statement, either publicly or in any other forum," the statement said.
Monarchy Must Remain Above Partisan Politics
The statement emphasised that the Sultanate remains a non-partisan institution committed to serving all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation.
It explained that the Sultan regularly receives politicians, public office holders and ordinary citizens seeking royal blessings, guidance and counsel, but such engagements should never be interpreted as political endorsements.
The Bureau Journal reports that the Sultan's media team reaffirmed that the traditional institution exists to promote national unity, peace and religious harmony rather than partisan political interests.
Public Warned Against Fake Political Claims
The Sultan's media office urged Nigerians to disregard any publication attempting to associate him with the campaign of any political party or candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.
It also cautioned media organisations and social media users against spreading false information capable of misleading the public or dragging respected religious and traditional institutions into political disputes.
The statement reiterated that His Eminence remains committed to promoting peaceful coexistence, national stability and unity across Nigeria, while maintaining his role as a father to all citizens irrespective of political differences.

Education › Tinubu Inaugurates Africa’s First Renewable Energy College In Kogi by BureauJournal(op): 5:45pm On Aug 04 |
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has inaugurated the Barefoot Renewable Energy College, Osara (BARECKS), and the Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant in Kogi State, describing the facility as a world-class institution built to international standards.
The inauguration, held at the Confluence University of Science and Technology in Osara, Kogi State, was performed on behalf of the President by Vice President Kashim Shettima.
The development marks a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to expand renewable energy capacity, develop specialised technical skills and create new opportunities in the country’s growing clean energy sector.
Tinubu: College Will Address Renewable Energy Skills Gap
President Tinubu said Nigeria, despite being abundantly endowed with sunlight, wind, biomass and water, had faced challenges in converting its natural resources into electricity and employment opportunities.
He said the new institution would help address the shortage of skilled technical manpower required to drive the country’s energy transition.
According to the President, the college was established as a vocational and technical institution designed to produce technicians, installers, operators and maintenance professionals with practical expertise in renewable energy technologies.
“Our continent has never suffered a deficit of intention. We have suffered the scarcity of hands trained to execute them,” Tinubu said.
He noted that graduates of the institution would receive internationally recognised certificates of proficiency, equipping them to secure employment, establish businesses and compete in the global renewable energy market.
“A certificate issued in Osara must one day command respect in Nairobi and in Frankfurt,” the President added.
Nigeria Becomes Pacesetter in Renewable Energy Capacity Development
Tinubu described the Barefoot Renewable Energy College as the first institution of its kind on the African continent, noting that it was modelled on vocational colleges in India that have trained people in rural communities as solar engineers.
He expressed optimism that the model could be replicated across Nigerian communities and contribute to expanding access to clean and affordable energy.
“If that method could light the villages of Rajasthan, it can light the settlements of Kogi, Ondo and Cross River. Nigeria assumes, from today, the position of pacesetter in renewable energy capacity development across Africa,” he said.
The President also called on development partners, private sector organisations, international institutions and research bodies to collaborate with the college in advancing research, innovation and technical training in renewable energy.
Shettima Represents Tinubu at Inauguration
Vice President Kashim Shettima, who represented President Tinubu at the event, conveyed the President’s greetings and satisfaction with the completion of the project.
Shettima said the administration remained focused on building institutions and industries capable of creating jobs and improving the livelihoods of Nigerians.
He noted that the President had consistently maintained that the success of government should be measured by the industries it establishes and the households that benefit from them.
Tinubu also commended the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology and the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria for their persistence in taking the project from conception to completion.
Ododo Hails Federal Government’s Investment in Human Capital
Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, said the inauguration demonstrated Nigeria’s commitment to sustainable development through investment in human capital.
Ododo said the college would strengthen the nation’s energy sector by developing skilled manpower while attracting investment and creating economic opportunities for communities.
He commended the Federal Government for its strategic investments in the knowledge economy and efforts to address challenges in the power sector.
Minister Highlights Job Creation Potential
The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, described the project as a major investment in human capital development and job creation.
Udeh said Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a one-trillion-dollar economy would depend significantly on developing a skilled workforce in strategic sectors, including renewable energy.
He urged the pioneer trainees to maintain high technical and ethical standards and serve as worthy ambassadors of the institution.
College Equipped With Modern Renewable Energy Facilities
The Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, described the college as the first of its kind in Nigeria.
He said the institution is equipped with smart classrooms, battery energy laboratories, a mini-grid simulation centre, energy efficiency laboratories and other modern training facilities.
According to Abdullahi, the college will train highly skilled professionals capable of contributing to renewable energy research and development in line with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
He added that the institution would help build the technical workforce required to support Nigeria’s transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources.
Ohinoyi Commends Federal Government
The Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, Dr. Ahmed Tijjani Anaje, welcomed the establishment of the institution in Kogi State, saying it would provide young people with valuable technical skills and enable them to contribute meaningfully to national development.
He thanked the Federal Government for locating the institution in the state and expressed optimism that the project would have a lasting impact on young Nigerians and the country’s renewable energy sector.
With the inauguration of the Barefoot Renewable Energy College and the Green Hydrogen Research and Demonstration Pilot Plant, Nigeria is positioning itself to expand technical capacity in renewable energy while preparing a new generation of professionals to participate in the global clean energy economy.
The Bureau Journal reports that the initiative is expected to strengthen renewable energy research, skills development and innovation while supporting Nigeria’s broader efforts to address energy challenges and create employment opportunities for its growing youth population. Politics › Gombe Coalition Condemns Pantami’s Conduct, Calls For Peaceful Campaigns by BureauJournal(op): 11:53am On Aug 04 |
By Hon. Hamza Ahmad BelloThe Gombe State Coalition of Political Civil Societies and Association has raised concerns over recent political developments in the state, particularly the activities and public engagements of political candidates and actors ahead of the forthcoming political contest.
The coalition expressed particular concern over what it described as the conduct, utterances and political approach of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, during his recent visit to Dukku Local Government Area and at political gatherings and interactions within Gombe metropolis.
Coalition Raises Concern Over Political Conduct
In a public statement, the coalition said it strongly condemned any attitude, statement, conduct or political engagement capable of creating tension, promoting division, provoking political hostility or undermining the long-standing peace, unity and harmonious relationship among the people of Gombe State.
According to the coalition, Gombe State has historically maintained a political culture founded on mutual respect, tolerance, peaceful coexistence and responsible political engagement.
It therefore warned that no political candidate, party, supporter or group should introduce political practices capable of threatening the unity and stability that residents of the state have collectively built and protected over the years.
Coalition Calls for Responsible Political Campaigns
The coalition acknowledged that every political candidate has the constitutional right to campaign, associate, mobilise supporters and present political ideas to the electorate.
However, it stressed that such rights must be exercised responsibly and within the provisions of the law, electoral regulations and accepted standards of peaceful political conduct.
The group called on Prof. Isa Ali Pantami and all other political candidates and party leaders to demonstrate maturity, restraint, tolerance and respect for the people and political institutions of Gombe State.
It urged political actors to focus their campaigns on policies, programmes, development plans and constructive ideas rather than actions or utterances that could generate unnecessary tension or weaken public confidence in the political process.
Gombe Coalition Urges INEC, Security Agencies to Monitor Political Activities
The Gombe State Coalition of Political Civil Societies and Association also called on relevant security agencies, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), political civil society organisations, traditional institutions, religious leaders and other stakeholders to closely and impartially monitor the political activities of all political parties and candidates.
The coalition specifically mentioned the All Progressives Congress (APC), PDP, African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other registered political parties, urging stakeholders to ensure compliance with the Constitution, electoral laws, campaign regulations and public-order requirements.
Group Says Gombe Is Greater Than Any Political Ambition
The coalition said it would not support or tolerate any individual or group whose conduct could endanger public peace, encourage political division or destabilise the unity and peaceful coexistence of the people of Gombe State.
It maintained that Gombe State is greater than the ambition of any individual, political party or candidate, stressing that political competition must not be allowed to destroy the peace, unity, mutual respect and collective progress of the state.
The group therefore urged all political actors and their supporters to conduct themselves responsibly, avoid inflammatory language, respect opposing views, uphold the rule of law and promote peaceful, issue-based and development-oriented political campaigns.
“Politics is not war. Gombe State must remain peaceful, united, and progressive before, during, and after every political contest,” the coalition said.
The Bureau Journal reports that the statement comes amid heightened political activities in Gombe State as political parties and their candidates prepare for the forthcoming political contest.

Politics › ADC Youths Call For Mark, Aregbesola’s Resignation, Seek Atiku’s Intervention by BureauJournal(op): 10:01am On Jul 30 |
By Suleiman Ahmad The National Youth Wing of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has called for the immediate resignation of the party's National Chairman, Senator David Mark, and National Secretary, Rauf Aregbesola, over alleged irregularities and injustice in the party's primary elections.
ADC Youths Raise Concerns Over Primary Elections
The demand was made during a press conference addressed by the ADC National Youth Leader, Balarabe Rufa'i, who accused the party's national leadership of allegedly undermining internal democracy by replacing candidates who emerged through duly conducted primaries with individuals who did not participate in the electoral process.
According to the youth wing, the alleged irregularities are particularly pronounced in Kano State, which it described as a strategic political stronghold for the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Group Cites Alleged Candidate Replacement in Kano
The group cited the case of Ambassador Abdurrahman Mai Nasara Salga, who reportedly won the ADC primary election for the Dala Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat after what it described as extensive grassroots mobilisation and personal investment in the party.
The youths alleged that despite his reported victory, his name was subsequently removed from the party's list by the national leadership.
They also alleged that Balarabe Rufa'i, who emerged as the ADC's senatorial candidate for Kano Central, has yet to have his name forwarded to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the party's official candidate despite reportedly winning the primary election.
Youths Accuse Party Figure of Interference
The youth wing further accused a senior ADC figure, Naja'atu Bala, of allegedly interfering with the outcome of House of Representatives primaries in several local government areas of Kano State.
According to the group, the names of some successful candidates were allegedly removed, while it was claimed that no primaries had been conducted in the affected constituencies, leaving the seats vacant on the list submitted to INEC.
The youths alleged that such actions amount to deliberate sabotage of the party's growth and electoral prospects in Kano State.
Group Seeks Atiku Abubakar's Intervention
The group appealed to the ADC's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and other key stakeholders to urgently intervene in the matter and resolve the internal crisis.
They said the intervention was necessary to restore confidence in the party's internal democratic processes and prevent the alleged disputes from affecting the ADC's electoral prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The youths warned that Kano remains central to the ADC's national electoral ambitions and that failure to address the grievances could erode the party's support base and weaken its chances in the 2027 elections.
ADC Youths Demand Resignations
Describing the situation as a failure of leadership, the youths maintained that the continued replacement of candidates who emerged through the primary process with what they termed "handpicked" individuals could have serious consequences for the party.
"We are calling on Senator David Mark and Rauf Aregbesola to resign immediately in the interest of justice and the survival of the party," the youth leader said.
The group added that party members who worked to build the ADC should not be denied the benefits of a transparent and credible nomination process.
They called on the party leadership to address the allegations, restore fairness, and uphold the principles of internal democracy in the selection of candidates for the 2027 general elections. Politics › Re: I Returned All Mission Schools To Churches, Governors Should Do Same - Tinubu by BureauJournal: 12:51pm On Jul 29 |
FSBoperator: If I recall, it was Gowon that seized the assets of the Catholic church in response to the Vatican supporting Biafra despite all the evil done by Biafrans on minority people.
The move to nationalise those assets like schools was to weaken the Catholic church's strong grip on Ibo populace.
To not make it obvious that he was targeting the Catholic church, Gowon whom himself is a Christian of the Anglican faith, also extended the nationalization beyond the Catholic church.
Subsequent military regimes will then push the responsibility of managing these schools to state govts.
With the return to democracy, most states in the South with Lagos leading , returned these assets back to the respective churches.
Giringori on the other hand, returned these churches so as to reduce the state responsibility in managing them and after offloading them , he refused to invest in existing public schools or to expand on them.
But the greatest fraud was how Giringori on his last few months in office began giving away Anambra public money to only Catholic schools in what cemented his parochial sectarian bigotry and a move most likely to move un budgeted state funds to be laundered through the Catholic diocese in Anambra.
Hundreds of millions were fretted away in the name of giveaway solely to the Catholic diocese in Anambra while other faith based institutions received nada. You lie too much. Always cooking up false narratives. Why? |

By Enemona Samuel EnduranceA local vigilante security personnel identified as Emmanuel Uloko, popularly known as Gatuso, has been killed in an attack in Ugboju Icho village, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, amid reports of a fresh attack in which more than 13 people were allegedly killed.
Vigilante Member Killed at Security Checkpoint
The first incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, after an earlier confrontation between residents and suspected Fulani herders over alleged destruction of farmlands in the community.
According to an eyewitness, trouble began after cattle allegedly entered villagers' farms and destroyed crops that were nearing harvest.
The eyewitness said the confrontation escalated after the affected villagers reportedly demanded compensation for the damaged crops, but the herders allegedly refused to pay.
Later that night, at about 1am, suspected attackers reportedly invaded a vigilante security checkpoint in the community and shot one of the personnel at close range.
The victim was reportedly shot in the stomach and chest before the attackers fled into the surrounding bushes.
Victim Identified as Emmanuel Uloko
The deceased security personnel was identified as Mr Emmanuel Uloko, popularly known as Gatuso, a resident of IPOM-Ahaje in Ugboju Icho, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State.
According to reports, other members of the vigilante group were unable to respond before the attackers escaped from the area.
Following distress calls, personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigerian Army reportedly arrived in the community a few hours later to help restore normalcy.
The body of the slain vigilante member was subsequently deposited at a mortuary to allow for further investigation and other necessary procedures.
Fresh Attack Reportedly Claims Over 13 Lives
Reports from the community later indicated that suspected Fulani herders moved their wives, cattle and other belongings away from their settlement, while some of the men reportedly remained behind and were allegedly armed with guns and other weapons.
Amid heightened tension in the area, the community was reportedly attacked again on Tuesday night.
According to the reports, more than 13 people, including women and children, were allegedly killed in the fresh attack.
The circumstances surrounding the reported killings could not be independently verified by The Bureau Journal as of the time of filing this report.

Foreign Affairs › 340 Vessels Stalled as Strait of Hormuz Shipping Slows by BureauJournal(op): 8:08am On Jul 23 |
By Emmanuel Odekina IyedeCommercial shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz has fallen significantly amid continuing security tensions in the Middle East, with a live maritime monitoring dashboard showing a sharp reduction in vessel movements and hundreds of ships waiting in and around the strategic waterway.
Data displayed by the Hormuz Strait Monitor, a live shipping and oil crisis tracking platform, showed that the strait was classified as closed on its latest dashboard snapshot, with commercial shipping described as effectively suspended following a brief reopening earlier in the year.
The platform's live traffic data showed 27 vessels transiting the strait within a 24-hour period, compared with a normal daily average of about 60 ships. That represents approximately 32.1 per cent of normal daily traffic, according to the dashboard.
The monitor also recorded 340 vessels waiting, comprising approximately 145 tankers, 85 bulk carriers and 110 other commercial vessels.
The figures highlight the extent to which security concerns around one of the world's most important maritime chokepoints are affecting commercial shipping and energy flows.
Hormuz Traffic Operating Far Below Normal Levels
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. It is one of the world's most strategically important shipping routes, particularly for the movement of crude oil and liquefied natural gas.
Under normal conditions, the waterway handles an average of about 60 vessel crossings a day, according to the Hormuz Strait Monitor's baseline. The latest live figures indicate that traffic is operating at roughly one-third of that level.
The monitor's dashboard also estimated daily vessel throughput at approximately 2.9 million deadweight tonnes (DWT), compared with a normal average of about 10.3 million DWT. That puts current estimated throughput at approximately 28.2 per cent of normal levels.
The decline is significant because the number of vessels alone does not fully capture the scale of disruption. A smaller number of large crude carriers can account for substantially more cargo capacity than a similar number of smaller commercial vessels.
The monitor's figures therefore suggest that the reduction in traffic is being accompanied by a substantial decline in the volume of shipping capacity moving through the waterway.
340 Vessels Reportedly Waiting
One of the clearest indicators of the disruption is the number of vessels waiting to move through the area.
The latest dashboard snapshot listed 340 vessels waiting. Of these, tankers accounted for 145 vessels, while 85 were classified as bulk carriers and another 110 as other commercial vessels.
The concentration of tankers among the waiting vessels is particularly significant because the Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for international energy markets.
Any prolonged delay affecting tanker movements can create knock-on effects across oil supply chains, freight markets, refinery operations and energy prices.
However, the monitor cautions that its figures are estimates aggregated from multiple public sources and may contain delays or inaccuracies. The platform advises users to verify critical information through official channels and not to rely on the dashboard as a sole source of intelligence.
War Risk Insurance Costs Surge
The disruption has also been reflected in the cost of maritime risk protection.
According to the Hormuz Strait Monitor, war risk insurance premiums have risen to approximately 2 per cent, compared with a normal rate of around 0.15 per cent.
That represents an increase of more than 13 times the normal level, according to the platform's calculations.
Higher insurance costs can make voyages through high-risk areas considerably more expensive for shipowners and operators. Combined with delays, rerouting and higher fuel consumption, the additional costs can eventually feed into global freight and commodity prices.
VLCC Spot Rates Rise 190 Per Cent
The monitor also recorded a sharp increase in tanker freight costs.
Its latest dashboard showed a VLCC spot rate of 145 Worldscale points, compared with a pre-crisis level of approximately 50 Worldscale points for the AG-East TD3C route.
The platform described the increase as approximately 190 per cent above the pre-crisis level.
The increase reflects the growing risk and operational difficulty associated with transporting crude through or around the affected region.
Why the Strait of Hormuz Matters to Global Energy Markets
The strategic importance of the waterway extends far beyond the Middle East.
The Hormuz Strait Monitor estimates that approximately 21 per cent of global oil supply and about 25 per cent of global LNG trade are exposed to disruptions affecting the strait.
Major economies in Asia, including Japan, South Korea, India and China, are among those with significant exposure to energy flows through the region. European markets can also be affected through changes in global energy prices and shipping costs.
A prolonged disruption could therefore affect not only the physical availability of energy supplies but also the cost of transporting commodities around the world.
The impact can extend to fuel prices, electricity generation, industrial production, manufacturing costs and consumer inflation.
Ships Face Longer Alternative Routes
With shipping activity through the Strait of Hormuz constrained, vessels seeking to avoid the region may have to take longer alternative routes.
The Hormuz Strait Monitor says some ships are rerouting through the Cape of Good Hope, potentially adding up to 14 days to certain journeys.
Longer voyages increase fuel consumption and crew costs while reducing the number of trips a vessel can complete within a given period. For tanker operators, these disruptions can tighten available shipping capacity and contribute to higher freight rates.
The consequences can therefore spread well beyond the immediate geographic area of the crisis.
Shipping Disruption Comes Amid Wider Regional Tensions
The decline in Hormuz traffic comes against a backdrop of heightened military and security tensions across the Middle East.
The Hormuz Strait Monitor's crisis timeline records a series of reported attacks, military strikes and incidents involving commercial shipping and regional infrastructure in recent weeks.
The platform's timeline includes reported attacks on commercial vessels, military operations involving the United States and Iran, and incidents affecting Gulf states and surrounding waters.
Independent reporting has also highlighted the broader deterioration in maritime security across the region. Recent developments in the Red Sea have prompted some shipping companies to alter routes, demonstrating how security risks at multiple maritime chokepoints can compound pressure on global shipping networks.
Hormuz and the Global Cost of Disruption
The economic implications of reduced shipping activity extend beyond the energy sector.
The Hormuz Strait Monitor estimates that the disruption could carry an economic cost of more than $4 billion per day, although this figure should be treated as an estimate rather than an independently verified measure.
The potential impact includes higher energy costs, increased shipping rates, longer delivery times and additional insurance expenses.
For countries heavily dependent on imported energy, sustained disruption could place pressure on foreign exchange reserves and government budgets while increasing the cost of transportation and electricity.
For businesses, higher freight and energy costs can raise production expenses and ultimately contribute to higher prices for consumers.
Oil Markets Remain Sensitive to Hormuz Developments
Oil markets have remained highly sensitive to developments surrounding the Strait of Hormuz.
Recent market reporting showed Brent crude rising above $95 a barrel on July 22 amid renewed concerns about escalating US-Iran tensions and threats to energy shipments in the region. The move underlined the market's sensitivity to any indication that disruptions around the world's major energy chokepoints could persist.
Market volatility could intensify if shipping restrictions continue or if further attacks affect commercial vessels and energy infrastructure.
At the same time, alternative supplies and strategic petroleum reserves can provide some temporary relief. However, these measures may not fully offset the consequences of a prolonged disruption to maritime energy flows.
Data Shows a Maritime Chokepoint Under Severe Pressure
The latest activity figures paint a picture of a maritime corridor operating well below its normal level.
With only 27 recorded vessel transits over 24 hours against a baseline of about 60, the waterway's commercial traffic is running at approximately one-third of normal levels. The reported 340 vessels waiting, elevated war risk insurance premiums and sharply higher VLCC freight rates further demonstrate the operational pressure facing shipping companies.
The estimated 2.9 million DWT of daily throughput, compared with a normal average of 10.3 million DWT, also points to a substantial reduction in the volume of maritime capacity moving through the strait.
However, the available figures should be interpreted with caution. The Hormuz Strait Monitor itself states that its data are estimates gathered from public sources and may contain inaccuracies or delays. Its live dashboard also contains some inconsistencies between its real-time metrics and its broader static summary text, making independent verification important when assessing the exact scale of the disruption.
What Happens Next?
The immediate outlook for the Strait of Hormuz will depend largely on security developments, diplomatic negotiations and the ability of commercial vessels to resume regular transit.
A sustained return toward normal traffic levels would likely require a significant improvement in maritime security and greater confidence among shipowners, insurers and energy companies.
Until then, the combination of reduced vessel movements, a large number of waiting ships, higher insurance premiums and elevated tanker freight rates will remain an important indicator of the continuing disruption.
For global markets, the central concern is not simply how many ships are currently crossing the Strait of Hormuz, but whether the waterway can return to reliable, predictable and commercially viable operations.
As the crisis develops, shipping activity through the strait will remain one of the most closely watched indicators of the health of global energy trade and maritime commerce. Source: The Business Bureau

Politics › Local Government Autonomy Stalled Despite ₦10.48 Trillion In Allocations by BureauJournal(op): 8:07am On Jul 17 |
Nearly two years after the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment granting financial autonomy to Nigeria's 774 local government councils, implementation of the ruling remains largely incomplete, raising fresh concerns about grassroots governance despite more than ₦10.48 trillion being allocated to councils during the period.
The July 11, 2024 judgment directed the Federal Government to pay statutory allocations directly into the accounts of democratically elected local governments, ending the long-standing practice of routing funds through State Joint Local Government Accounts.
The ruling was widely celebrated as a major step toward strengthening grassroots administration, improving accountability, and ensuring that local communities benefit directly from public funds.
However, available evidence suggests that implementation has been inconsistent across the country, with many councils still operating under financial arrangements largely controlled by state governments.
Allocations Rise Above ₦10 Trillion
An analysis of Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) disbursements shows that local government councils received approximately ₦10.48 trillion between July 2024 and June 2026.
During the first twelve months following the Supreme Court judgment, councils received about ₦4.5 trillion. That figure increased significantly to nearly ₦6 trillion during the following twelve months, representing a year-on-year increase of more than 33 percent.
The sharp increase reflects improved revenue generation and higher FAAC distributions across all tiers of government.
Despite the larger allocations, many communities across Nigeria continue to complain about poor infrastructure, inadequate healthcare services, deteriorating roads, insufficient schools, and limited access to clean water.
Autonomy Still Largely Unimplemented
Although the Supreme Court clearly directed that allocations should be paid directly to local government accounts, reports from several states indicate that many councils are yet to receive their allocations independently.
Officials in different parts of the country say local governments still depend on state governments for the release of funds, while approval is often required before projects can be executed.
The continued operation of State Joint Local Government Accounts has become one of the major issues delaying full implementation of the judgment.
For many years, labour unions, civil society organisations and local government officials have argued that the joint account system weakens grassroots administration because councils lack full control over their finances.
NULGE Raises Fresh Concerns
The National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) says financial autonomy remains largely theoretical.
According to the union, allocations have not been paid directly to councils in many states despite repeated appeals to the Federal Government to fully implement the Supreme Court judgment.
NULGE maintains that genuine financial independence can only be achieved when local governments receive allocations directly into their own accounts without interference.
The union believes this would improve service delivery, strengthen accountability and enhance development at the grassroots level.
Implementation Differs Across States
Findings indicate that implementation varies from one state to another.
Officials in states including Kaduna, Kano, Benue, Plateau and Sokoto reportedly say councils still rely on state-controlled financial arrangements.
In several of those states, council chairmen reportedly require state approval before embarking on major projects.
However, Jigawa State has emerged as one of the few states where local government officials say direct federal allocations are already being paid into individual council accounts.
Officials there argue that the arrangement has improved transparency and enabled councils to respond more quickly to community needs.
Grassroots Communities Demand Better Services
Questions over local government autonomy have become increasingly relevant as communities continue to demand improved public services.
Residents in several parts of the country have called for better roads, functional primary healthcare centres, improved public schools, stronger security and enhanced rural infrastructure.
Many citizens argue that the significant increase in allocations should translate into visible improvements in their communities.
Development experts have consistently maintained that granting local governments genuine financial independence would strengthen grassroots democracy and improve accountability in public spending.
Federal Government Yet to Complete Implementation
Following the Supreme Court judgment, the Federal Government established an inter-ministerial committee to develop procedures for implementing direct allocation payments.
The committee was expected to resolve legal and administrative issues involving relevant institutions, including the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, the Central Bank of Nigeria, the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.
However, nearly two years later, stakeholders say nationwide implementation remains incomplete.
Analysts believe that achieving full local government autonomy will require stronger political commitment, improved administrative coordination and strict compliance with the Supreme Court's judgment.
Autonomy Seen as Key to Grassroots Development
Governance experts argue that local governments remain the closest tier of government to ordinary Nigerians and should therefore possess both administrative and financial independence.
They say effective local government administration is essential for improving primary education, healthcare, sanitation, rural roads, agriculture and community development.
As Nigeria continues discussions on constitutional reforms and governance restructuring, the implementation of local government financial autonomy is expected to remain one of the country's most significant governance issues.
For many Nigerians, the real success of the Supreme Court judgment will not be measured by the amount allocated to councils but by whether those resources ultimately translate into improved living conditions at the grassroots. Politics › Over 70% Of Nigerians Remain Poor Despite Reforms, World Bank Says by BureauJournal(op): 8:29pm On Jul 16 |
By Enemona Samuel Endurance | Abuja | Nigeria More than seven in every 10 Nigerians remain poor or are at risk of falling into poverty despite sweeping economic reforms introduced by the Federal Government, according to the World Bank.
The international financial institution said that although recent reforms have improved Nigeria's macroeconomic stability, the benefits have yet to translate into better living conditions for millions of citizens who continue to grapple with rising living costs, food insecurity and declining purchasing power.
World Bank Raises Concern Over Poverty Levels
The World Bank estimates that over 70 percent of Nigerians are either living in poverty or remain vulnerable to becoming poor, underscoring the enormous social challenges facing Africa's largest economy.
While reforms such as the removal of petrol subsidy, exchange rate liberalisation and fiscal adjustments have strengthened government revenues and restored investor confidence, the institution noted that many households have yet to experience tangible improvements in their daily lives.
Economic Reforms Deliver Stability, But Not Shared Prosperity
President Bola Tinubu's administration has implemented several economic reforms since 2023 aimed at stabilising Nigeria's economy.
These measures have received positive assessments from international financial institutions for improving foreign exchange liquidity, strengthening public finances and attracting renewed investor interest.
However, the reforms also triggered sharp increases in fuel prices, transportation costs and inflation, placing additional pressure on households already struggling with the high cost of living.
Millions Still Face Food Insecurity
According to the World Bank, poverty remains widespread across the country, with millions of Nigerians continuing to experience food insecurity and reduced purchasing power.
The institution stressed that achieving macroeconomic stability alone is not enough unless ordinary citizens begin to see improvements in income, employment opportunities and living standards.
Federal Government Plans New Poverty Scorecard
In response to concerns about the impact of the reforms, the Federal Government has announced plans to introduce a new "shared prosperity" scorecard to measure whether economic policies are improving the lives of Nigerians.
Speaking at a BusinessDay conference in Lagos, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, said the scorecard will track three major indicators:
1. Reduction in multidimensional poverty. 2. Growth in real income per capita. 3. Decline in income inequality.
The proposed framework is expected to provide measurable evidence of whether economic reforms are producing meaningful social and economic outcomes for Nigerians.
Economists Call for Inclusive Growth
Economic analysts have repeatedly argued that while macroeconomic indicators are important, long-term success will depend on how quickly reforms translate into job creation, improved incomes, lower food prices and stronger social protection programmes.
They note that sustained economic growth must be accompanied by policies that directly improve household welfare, particularly for vulnerable populations affected by inflation and rising living costs.
Outlook for Nigeria's Economy
The World Bank maintains that Nigeria's economic reforms remain necessary for long-term stability but says greater attention must now be given to ensuring that growth becomes inclusive.
With poverty levels remaining high, the institution believes future policy efforts should focus on expanding economic opportunities, improving productivity, protecting vulnerable households and ensuring that the gains from ongoing reforms reach ordinary Nigerians. Foreign Affairs › Nigeria Moves to Protect Investments Abandoned by Returning Citizens From South by BureauJournal(op): 6:48pm On Jun 30 |
By Queen MadakiThe Federal Government has begun documenting businesses and other assets abandoned by Nigerians returning from South Africa under its voluntary evacuation programme, as authorities prepare to seek compensation for affected citizens amid rising anti-immigration tensions.
The Bureau Journal reports that the move follows the evacuation of hundreds of Nigerians who opted to leave South Africa over fears that ongoing nationwide anti-immigration protests could disrupt businesses or escalate into xenophobic violence.
Nigeria Begins Documentation of Abandoned Assets
Speaking in an interview with Channels Television, Nigeria's Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Alexander Ajayi, said the government's response extends beyond evacuating citizens to protecting their investments.
According to him, Nigerians returning home have been directed to compile detailed records of businesses, vehicles, shops and other movable and immovable assets left behind in South Africa.
"I have asked them before they left yesterday to document very accurately those things they were leaving behind in terms of businesses, in terms of even cars, movable and immovable properties," Ajayi said.
He explained that the documentation would provide evidence of investments made by affected Nigerians and could form the basis for future compensation claims.
Diplomatic Engagement Underway
Ajayi disclosed that discussions had already begun with South African authorities, including the country's Deputy Minister of Finance, regarding the fate of assets belonging to Nigerian nationals.
Although the Federal Government has not announced the legal framework through which compensation would be pursued, the development suggests Abuja is preparing to raise the matter through diplomatic channels with the South African government.
Evacuation Follows Anti-Immigration Protests
The government's intervention comes as nationwide anti-immigration demonstrations organised by the self-styled "March and March" movement continue across South Africa.
The protests, which began on June 30, have heightened concerns among foreign nationals after organisers called for the deportation of undocumented migrants, raising fears of possible xenophobic attacks.
According to Ajayi, many Nigerians residing legally in South Africa voluntarily joined the evacuation programme because of concerns that the protests could negatively affect their businesses and personal safety.
335 Nigerians Evacuated
The Federal Government has so far evacuated 335 Nigerians under its voluntary repatriation programme.
Ajayi also referenced government estimates suggesting that about 500,000 Nigerians living in South Africa are undocumented, although the figure has not been independently verified.
International Community Monitoring Situation
The demonstrations have also attracted international attention.
The United States Mission to South Africa temporarily reduced operations at its diplomatic facilities in Cape Town, Durban, Johannesburg and Pretoria, citing security concerns linked to the protests.
Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has appealed for peaceful demonstrations and warned against acts of vigilantism.
Compensation Process Yet to Be Defined
It remains unclear whether South Africa will accept responsibility for privately owned assets abandoned by Nigerians during the evacuation.
However, the Federal Government's decision to document the losses signals its intention to pursue diplomatic engagement aimed at protecting the economic interests of affected citizens.
As Nigeria News Today continues to monitor developments, The Bureau Journal understands that discussions between Nigerian and South African authorities are expected to continue as both countries seek a peaceful resolution to the concerns arising from the protests.

Crime › Kebbi Police Arrest 13 Cybercrime Suspects, Debunk ‘sai Mallam’ Claims by BureauJournal(op): 11:03am On Jun 30 |
By Abdullahi TukurThe Kebbi State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging the emergence of a terrorist group known as "Sai Mallam" in parts of the state, clarifying that investigations found no evidence of such an organisation operating within Kebbi.
Instead, police said the reports stemmed from the activities of a cybercrime syndicate popularly known as "Yan Vocal," whose members allegedly engage in online fraud, identity theft and digital blackmail. The Bureau Journal reports that 13 suspects linked to the group have been arrested.
Police Explain 'Sai Mallam' Misconception
In a statement issued by the Command's Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, the police said a comprehensive investigation debunked claims that a terrorist group was imposing levies on communities in the Argungu and Zuru Emirates.
According to the Command, the rumours were traced to the activities of the cybercrime network rather than any organised terrorist group.
How the Suspects Allegedly Operated
Police said the syndicate consists mainly of young people between the ages of 19 and 24 who allegedly specialise in hacking social media accounts, creating fake online identities and using threats, deception and blackmail to extort money from victims.
The suspects reportedly targeted politicians, traditional rulers, religious leaders, business owners and other prominent individuals both within Nigeria and abroad.
Investigators said the group allegedly used sophisticated digital tools, including video-editing software and pre-recorded explicit videos, to deceive victims into believing they were participating in live video calls with women.
The manipulated content was then allegedly used to threaten victims and demand money.
13 Suspects Arrested in Intelligence-Led Operation
The Kebbi State Police Command said a coordinated intelligence-led operation led to the arrest of 13 suspects, all from Argungu town.
According to the police, the suspects conspired to obtain nude images of a female victim before demanding ₦1 million under the threat of publishing the images.
Investigators also alleged that members of the syndicate defrauded another victim of ₦3 million after manipulating a video to falsely portray the victim as engaging in a live video conversation with a naked woman.
Police Reassure Residents
The Command urged residents not to panic over reports of the alleged "Sai Mallam" terrorist group, assuring the public that no such organisation has been identified in Kebbi State.
Police also advised members of the public to remain vigilant online, protect their personal information and promptly report suspicious digital activities to security agencies.
As Nigeria News Today continues to monitor developments in cybercrime and public safety, The Bureau Journal understands that investigations into the activities of the suspected syndicate are ongoing.

The Bureau Journal reports that the move forms part of the Federal Government's broader efforts to modernise healthcare delivery through the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The statement explained that the National Health Technology and Data Analytics Office will complement, rather than replace, the statutory responsibilities of existing health institutions and agencies.
Its responsibilities include improving collaboration between public and private healthcare providers, developing interoperability standards for health information systems, and implementing the National Digital Health Architecture approved by the National Council on Health in November 2025.

He also spearheaded the roadmap that helped secure an €18 million grant from the European Union to support healthcare sector development.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Adigwe gained international recognition after conducting what was described as the world's first scientific analysis of the Covid Organics herbal preparation.

Crime › Navy Seizes 52,600 Litres Of Stolen Crude In Rivers by BureauJournal(op): 8:12pm On Jun 26 |
By Queen MadakiThe Nigerian Navy has recovered approximately 52,600 litres of suspected stolen crude oil during an intelligence-led operation targeting crude oil theft in Rivers State.
The operation, carried out under Operation Delta Sentinel, forms part of the Navy's sustained campaign against crude oil theft and illegal refining activities across the Niger Delta. As The Bureau Journal reports, the latest recovery underscores ongoing efforts to curb economic sabotage and safeguard Nigeria's critical oil infrastructure.
Operation Leads to Major Crude Oil Seizure
According to the Nigerian Navy, personnel of the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Pathfinder intercepted two wooden boats at Ogoloma in Okrika Local Government Area after acting on credible intelligence obtained during a routine patrol.
The boats were reportedly preparing to offload suspected petroleum products when naval operatives moved in and intercepted them.
Following a search of the vessels, officers discovered approximately 250 sacks containing about 52,600 litres of suspected stolen crude oil.
Materials for Illegal Refining Recovered
Beyond the crude oil seizure, the patrol team also recovered several materials allegedly meant for the construction of illegal refining sites.
The discovery suggests that those behind the operation were planning to expand illicit refining activities before the intervention by security personnel.
Navy Says Operation Frustrated Economic Saboteurs
Director of Naval Information, Commodore Abiodun Folorunsho, said the successful operation disrupted attempts by criminal elements to supply illegal refining camps with crude oil and equipment.
He noted that the operation denied economic saboteurs access to both crude oil and the materials required to sustain their illegal activities.
Folorunsho added that all recovered products and associated materials were handled in accordance with established anti-crude oil theft procedures.
Nigerian Navy Reaffirms Commitment
The Nigerian Navy reiterated its commitment to sustaining intelligence-driven operations aimed at dismantling crude oil theft syndicates, disrupting illegal refining activities, and protecting Nigeria's oil and gas infrastructure.
The Bureau Journal understands that the Navy has continued to intensify operations across the Niger Delta as part of broader efforts to curb oil theft, improve maritime security, and protect the nation's economy.

Politics › Malami Trial Faces Fresh Controversy Over Alleged Media Bias by BureauJournal(op): 7:52pm On Jun 24 |
By Aliyu Usman, Birnin KebbiThe Arewa Youth Progressive Alliance (AYPA) has accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and sections of the media of promoting what it described as a one-sided narrative in the ongoing trial of former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, SAN.
The group alleged that critical facts which emerged during court proceedings were being ignored while selective information was amplified to shape public perception against the former minister.
In a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by its spokesperson, Adam Umar Adam, AYPA expressed concern over what it termed an orchestrated attempt to influence public opinion and portray Malami as guilty before the conclusion of the trial.
AYPA Raises Concerns Over Court Reporting
According to the group, some media organisations and social media platforms focused heavily on claims of multi-million naira transactions allegedly linked to Alkausar Farms following the testimony of the fifth prosecution witness, a compliance officer with Jaiz Bank.
AYPA, however, argued that these reports failed to reflect crucial revelations made during cross-examination.
"Curiously, the same reports deliberately ignored the most important revelations that emerged during cross-examination," the group stated.
The alliance said the witness admitted under cross-examination that she was not the account officer responsible for the account in question.
It also noted that the witness confirmed before the court that none of the defendants, including Abubakar Malami, SAN, his wife, or his son, was a signatory to the Alkausar Farms account tendered as evidence.
No Link to Federal Ministry of Justice, AYPA Claims
AYPA further stated that the witness testified that none of the inflows or outflows in the account originated from the Federal Ministry of Justice.
According to the group, the witness also confirmed that no payments were made from the Ministry to the account, nor from the account to the Ministry.
"These are not minor details. They are central facts that go to the heart of the public narrative being promoted around this case," AYPA said.
The group maintained that despite extensive publicity surrounding the testimony, no evidence had been presented showing that the funds belonged to Malami, that he controlled the account, or that the transactions represented proceeds of unlawful activity.
Questions Over Alkausar Farms Ownership
AYPA also pointed to publicly available records indicating that Alkausar Farms was established in 2008, approximately seven years before Malami became Attorney-General of the Federation.
The group argued that repeatedly linking transactions in the account to Malami without establishing ownership, signatory authority, beneficial interest or any criminal nexus was misleading.
"It is therefore misleading for sections of the media to repeatedly create the impression that the existence of transactions in an account automatically translates into wrongdoing by Malami," the statement added.
Call for Balanced Reporting
The alliance further noted that after the testimony of five prosecution witnesses, the court was yet to hear evidence linking transactions in the Alkausar Farms account to the Federal Ministry of Justice.
According to AYPA, responsible journalism requires that reports of court proceedings reflect both examination-in-chief and cross-examination, particularly where admissions made under cross-examination substantially alter public understanding of the evidence.
"We are not asking for special treatment for Malami or any other defendant. We are demanding fairness, balance and respect for the principle that every citizen remains innocent until proven guilty by a competent court of law," the group said.
AYPA warned that selective reporting of judicial proceedings could undermine public confidence in both the media and the justice system.
The group therefore urged the EFCC to exercise restraint and professionalism in its public communications concerning ongoing trials while calling on media organisations to uphold ethical standards and balanced reporting.
According to AYPA, the courtroom remains the only place where guilt or innocence can be determined, stressing that no Nigerian should be convicted by headlines, social media narratives or selective storytelling before a court reaches its verdict.

By Abdullahi TukurNo fewer than eight persons have been killed following a violent clash between farmers and herders in Gulma Town, Argungu Local Government Area of Kebbi State.
The Bureau Journal gathered that the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday evening and has since triggered heightened security measures in the affected community.
Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Command, through its Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said the crisis began when a herder identified as Yaron Buba Dogo allegedly allowed his cattle to stray into the farmland of one Alhaji Aminu Ala, resulting in the destruction of crops.
According to the police spokesperson, a confrontation ensued between the two men during which the farmer was allegedly stabbed in the neck and died from the injuries sustained.
Mob Attack Escalates Violence
SP Bashir Usman explained that following the killing of the farmer, angry youths and residents mobilised and attacked the herder, killing him before setting his body ablaze.
The situation quickly degenerated into widespread violence as the mob allegedly launched further attacks on members of the affected community.
Despite efforts by security operatives to contain the crisis, four additional persons lost their lives and their bodies were burnt beyond recognition during the violence.
The police further disclosed that two more corpses were later recovered from a farmland located outside Gulma Town, bringing the total death toll to eight.
Five Persons Rescued
The Police Command stated that five persons, including a woman, were successfully rescued during the operation and evacuated to safety at the Argungu Police Station.
The rescued victims are currently under protective custody as authorities continue efforts to restore calm in the area.
Curfew Imposed as Security Tightens
To prevent further escalation of the crisis, a joint security operation comprising police and other security agencies has been deployed to Gulma and surrounding communities.
The Kebbi State Government has also imposed a curfew in the affected area to maintain law and order.
According to the police, normalcy is gradually returning as security patrols and surveillance operations continue across the community.
Investigation Ongoing

Crime › Arms Cache Intercepted In Kogi As Security Foils Retaliatory Attack Plot by BureauJournal(op): 6:14pm On Jun 22 |
By Enemona Samuel EnduranceThe Bureau Journal reports that the Kogi State Government has confirmed a major security breakthrough following the interception of a large cache of arms and ammunition allegedly intended for criminal elements planning retaliatory attacks within the state.
Coordinated Security Operation
The operation was carried out through a joint effort involving local security operatives under the Kogi State security architecture, the Hybrid Forces under the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and the 12 Brigade of the Nigerian Army.
Security authorities said the breakthrough followed credible intelligence on the movement of weapons concealed in a Golf 2 vehicle used to supply criminal networks operating within and outside the state.
Arrests and Intelligence Tracking
Acting on intelligence, security operatives tracked the suspects across state lines in collaboration with security agencies in Sokoto State, placing them under surveillance for over two weeks before the arrest.
Three suspects were subsequently arrested in Sokoto State, with preliminary investigations already yielding actionable intelligence for further operations.
Recovered Weapons and Evidence
The operation led to the recovery of two AK-47 rifles, several magazines, sixty-seven rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, two pistols, and military uniforms suspected to be intended for criminal operations.
The Golf 2 vehicle used in transporting the weapons was also impounded in Kabba, Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State.
Link to Criminal Network Activities
Authorities linked the intercepted weapons to efforts by criminal elements attempting to rearm after recent operational setbacks, including the neutralisation of a bandit leader during a failed kidnapping attempt in Iluke Bunu.
Security officials said intelligence further indicated that criminal groups operating in forested areas were facing shortages of arms following sustained operations against them.
Government Response and Security Assurance
The Kogi State Government said it had intensified intelligence gathering, surveillance, and inter-agency coordination to prevent retaliatory attacks and disrupt criminal regrouping efforts.
Officials stated that the operation demonstrated that security agencies remain ahead of criminal networks attempting to destabilise the state.
The government commended all participating agencies including the DSS, Nigerian Army, Hybrid Forces, and local security structures for their coordination and professionalism.
National Collaboration and Leadership Commendation
The state government also appreciated the Sokoto State Government and its security agencies for their support during the operation.
The National Security Adviser, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were also commended for strengthening national security coordination and support for sub-national security efforts.
The government warned criminal elements that Kogi State will not serve as a safe haven for banditry, kidnapping, or terrorism.
Residents were assured that there is no cause for alarm as security agencies continue intensified operations across the state.

Politics › Tension Mounts In APC As Party Faithful Await Final Senatorial Candidates List by BureauJournal(op): 9:05am On Jun 21 |
By Queen Madaki There is growing anticipation within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as party members across Nigeria await the release of the final list of senatorial candidates expected from the party's national leadership in the coming weeks.
The development follows the recently concluded APC senatorial primaries held across various states, where preliminary results and lists of successful aspirants emerged at the state level. However, political observers and party insiders say the process may not be entirely concluded until the national leadership finalizes and publishes the official list.
Consultations Continue Within APC
According to sources familiar with ongoing consultations within the party, discussions are continuing at different levels regarding the composition of the final list, with competing interests seeking to ensure that candidates considered politically strategic receive the party's backing.
Some of the sources, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, said there have been intense political engagements involving influential stakeholders within the party following reports that a number of incumbent senators did not emerge victorious during the state-level primaries.
The sources claimed that efforts are being made by various political interests to secure favourable outcomes for preferred candidates ahead of the final ratification process. However, The Bureau Journal could not independently verify the extent of such efforts as of the time of filing this report.
Political Interests and Expectations
Political analysts note that internal consultations and negotiations are not unusual in major political parties, especially during election cycles where strategic considerations often shape final decisions regarding candidates and party direction.
There are also indications that state governors and other key stakeholders are actively involved in discussions aimed at protecting their political interests and strengthening their influence ahead of the next legislative session.
Observers believe that the final list, once released, could significantly shape the political landscape within the APC and determine the balance of interests among various blocs within the party.
Party Members Await Official Position
The Bureau Journal gathered that the uncertainty surrounding the final list has generated apprehension in some quarters, particularly among aspirants whose victories were announced at the state level and supporters who are eager for clarity from the party leadership.
Party members in several states are said to be closely monitoring developments, with many expressing hope that the final decisions will reflect the outcome of the primaries and strengthen internal cohesion ahead of the general elections.
While expectations continue to build, APC officials at the national level are yet to issue a comprehensive statement regarding the final senatorial list or the timeline for its official release.
As the party moves toward concluding the nomination process, attention remains fixed on the decisions that will emerge from the APC headquarters in the coming weeks. Source: https://thebureaujournal.com/tension-mounts-apc-final-senatorial-candidates-list/

Foreign Affairs › African Lawmakers Push Bills Restricting LGBT Rights by BureauJournal(op): 2:52pm On Jun 19 |
By Enemona Samuel Endurance Lawmakers Move for New Anti-LGBT Legislation
Lawmakers from more than a dozen African countries have pledged to introduce new bills restricting LGBT rights following a recent conference held in Ghana.
The commitment followed the African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family Values and Sovereignty, which brought together self-described pro-family activists from across Africa and Europe in Accra from June 3 to June 6, The Bureau Journal reports.
Ghana Conference and Policy Direction
The conference took place days after Ghana’s parliament passed one of the continent’s strictest anti-LGBT measures, a bill criminalising LGBT promotion.
Participants at the gathering said the event reflected a broader shift toward more restrictive laws targeting LGBT communities across parts of Africa, with some attributing the momentum to conservative political influence from the United States and Europe.
Political Context and International Influence
Some attendees claimed the policy environment has shifted further since Donald Trump returned to the White House, noting changes in international advocacy priorities on LGBT rights.
Speakers at the conference urged lawmakers to translate discussions into legislative action, budget allocations, and oversight mechanisms upon returning to their respective countries.
“When you return to your respective capitals, let the resolutions we adopt here not gather dust in the archives of our secretariats. Let them be translated into active bills, robust budgetary allocations, and rigorous oversight,” said Ghana Parliament Speaker Alban Bagbin.
He added: “Go home and tell your people that their representatives have resolved to protect the sanctuaries of their homes, the heritage of their ancestors, and the sovereignty of their nations.”
Regional Legal Trends
More than half of Africa’s 54 countries already criminalise same-sex sexual acts, according to regional legal data.
Several countries, including Uganda and Senegal, have recently expanded restrictions by adopting laws that criminalise LGBT promotion, following similar legislative moves in Ghana. Source: https://thebureaujournal.com/african-lawmakers-lgbt-bills-ghana-conference/
