Super Eagles camp in disarray as players, coaches battle Rohr over ‘poor decisions’

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is said to be trying to bring sanity to Super Eagles camp over ‘the bad blood’ generated by Friday’s 4-4 draw the Nigerian team recorded against Sierra Leone in an African Cup of Nations qualifier.

Nigeria led Sierra Leone by 4-0 at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Friday only for the Leone Stars to come back and force the Super Eagles to a 4-4 draw.

At the end of the game, many of the players and some back room staff blamed Rohr for the draw, accusing the German of ignoring their counsel in the game management.

An NFF top official, who pleaded anonymity, said the federation’s President, Amaju Pinnick, had to intervene when it looked like some players and coaches were trying to mutiny against Rohr over the way he is handling the team.

Relating to an incident during the match when Skipper Ahmed Musa had to confront Rohr for making ‘bad changes’ in the course of the game, the source said many of the senior players accused the German of not understanding the flow of the game and therefore could not make effective changes.

“The Sierra Leonean coach made three changes that turned the game on its head, while Rohr reduced the effectiveness of our team by some curious decisions.

“The worst part is that he did not seek any of his coaches’ opinion before making changes during the game. He only wrote some things on a paper and passed to our team secretary, Day Enebi, who then submitted names for substitutions.

“Rohr said some of the players were not mentally ripe for national team games, yet he keeps inviting these players.

“The way things stand, if the NFF president fail to bring sanity to the camp, we could witness worse performance in Freetown,” he said.


The source also said some of the senior players have started questioning Rohr’s competence, arguing the German has not been able to lift the team above the 2017 level.

“I have been confronted by some of these players with what they perceive as the poor coaching standard of the leader of the technical crew.

“After the 2-1 loss to Argentina at the World Cup in Russia, Rohr said he had learnt his lessons from that game. But he seems to have learnt nothing.

“Some of the senior players have now decided to play more active part in team selection and management during games since Rohr has shown a glaring lack of capacity to manage the team effectively.

“I am sure that if the late Amodu Shaibu or Stephen Keshi were in charge of the Super Eagles, no team, not even France or Brazil, can force Nigeria to a draw after trailing by 4-0. It is not possible.”

Nasa SpaceX launch: Astronaut crew heads to orbit

Four astronauts - three from the US and one from Japan - have launched from Florida on a mission to the International Space Station (ISS).

The crew rode to orbit in a rocket and capsule provided by the SpaceX company.

It's only the second time the firm has supplied the service.

The US space agency Nasa has said it is now entering a new era in which routine astronaut journeys to low-Earth orbit are being conducted by commercial providers.

The four individuals making their way up to the ISS are the Americans Michael Hopkins, Victor Glover and Shannon Walker, and the highly experienced Japanese space agency (Jaxa) astronaut Soichi Noguchi.

By participating in this mission, Noguchi becomes only the third person in history to leave Earth in three different types of space vehicle, having previously flown on Soyuz and shuttle hardware.

It took 12 minutes for the Falcon to get the Dragon into the right part of the sky and drop it off.

"Well done, that was one heck of a ride," crew commander Mike Hopkins radioed down to controllers. "Congratulations to everyone. Resilience is in orbit."

"Resilience" is the name the astronauts have given their capsule.

The ship will use its own thrusters to complete the rest of the journey up to the station. A docking with the orbiting platform is set for about 0400 GMT on Tuesday.

Having seven people on the 410km-high outpost will triple the amount of science that can be performed in its special microgravity environment.

SpaceX has signed contracts with Nasa valued in excess of $3bn (£2.3bn) to develop, test and fly an astronaut taxi service.

As part of this relationship, the company ran a demonstration mission in May in which astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken were taken to the station and then returned safely to Earth.

The contracted arrangements also call for six "operational", or routine, missions - this flight being the first.

"The big milestone here is that we are now moving away from development and test and into operational flights. And in fact this operational flight was licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration. So this is a truly a commercial launch," commented Nasa Administrator Jim Bridenstine.

Nasa has a similar deal with the Boeing aerospace company, although its service is more than a year behind SpaceX.

The agency says its new model of contracting out transportation to low-Earth orbit is saving billions of dollars in procurement costs.

It intends to use these economies to fund its Moon and Mars ambitions. To that end, Nasa is close to testing the giant new rocket it has commissioned to take astronauts back to the lunar surface, a goal it hopes to attain in 2024, or soon after.

Just before they return to Earth, they'll be joined aloft by another SpaceX-launched crew for a brief handover.

Indeed, the coming year is going to be very busy for the Californian service provider with plenty of trips up to the station being made by both its crewed and cargo-only versions of Dragon.

"In the next 15 months, we should be flying roughly seven Dragon missions. And this mission represents the initiation of a Dragon in orbit continuously - knocking on wood - and certainly is really the beginning of a new era in human spaceflight," said SpaceX's Gwynne Shotwell.

The company president was in attendance at Kennedy, carrying out media duties in place of founder and CEO Elon Musk who is said to be suffering a mild case of Covid.

Just to make a little contribution.

I liked what I saw in the first half when it came to keeping the ball and creating chances.

The Sierra Leone players gave us the respect and we made them pay for it.

What intrigued me most was how we pressed with numbers in the first half. There was literally no room for the Sierra Leone players to build passes.

Unfortunately, I was too busy to watch most of the game, especially the second half but when I tuned in, for what I still don't get is how we switched from pressing with intensity to sitting back.

We might have still attacked but we switched off from our pressing game and the result was catastrophic.

We are getting somewhere slowly. Now remember that during the Afcon 2014, Keshi used to sub in Yobo during the ending minutes for that much needed leadership, for me I don't think Mikel is a leader, the leadership quality was down to Yobo and majorly Enyeama. That's for 2014.

Now I have seen Ekong leading the back line during the Olympics game and Sia1 told him to be vocal and completely control the back line which he did fantastically, I recall him almost screaming Sincere's head off because he didn't return early. What's the point? The same Ekong all of a sudden lost all that leadership skill under Rohr, that means Rohr isn't telling him to take charge of the team. You don't just pick up and start shouting at your teammates the coach has to tell you to do that, so basically Rohr isn't emphasising that leadership skill in his players and that again is majorly on the coach as well. On the other hand some coaches even keep one slot open for their team leader, Yobo wasn't the best but he was needed for that leadership, why are we so quick to discard the older players with proper leadership skills and experience? If you don't have that in your team I honestly don't even mind inviting Onazi, just let him be there for times like this when we need a leader on the pitch and plug him in. See anything you point out still goes back to the coach, obviously some blame should go to the players but 80% should be going to the coach honestly.

So he set up his team for the game and in the first half it was going well right? Lots of endeavour from the players, obviously you could see the players were trying and carrying out the coach's instructions true? Then the second half starts, the opposing team makes a few basic tweaks, what you did that worked in the first half was no longer working but because the coach has not changed your own tactics you have no choice but to continue doing it meaning that you, who looked like prime Zidane when the formation was working now looks like Bakayoko, what are you as the player supposed to do? Call your teammates and change the formation for the coach? Now the difference between this and the 7-2 for Liverpool for example is that from the word go, Liverpool players weren't up to it, you know they weren't performing, it wasn't even about the tactics. But in this case it is impossible to argue that someone who played out your tactics fantastically in the first half just decided to take a safari hike in the middle of the second half.

The basic hallmark of a decent coach is your ability to make in game changes. Granted the setup was decent, the Leone coach changed tactics in game and Rohr had absolutely no answer. It is shocking that our coach who earns millions of tax payers money got out coached by a poor local Sierra Leone coach wearing shorts and you are defending him. It is shocking.

I have not been watching football for a while but I am positive Ramon Azeez didn't turn into a pastor overnight. Besides I just explained to you how he could use even those that are on the bench, he basically failed, just leave it at that. I get you like the man, but blind loyalty isn't loyalty at all, say it as it is first and then maybe say he needs a second chance, but if you don't see how this is totally the coaches fault then bros, you probably haven't attended a coaching class before and I will disengage. Bros, at 4-2 up, you could have subbed in Yobo self and it wouldn't be that. You just need defensive minded players. The Leone guys had no strategy basically, hoof it forward, win the first header and just move it over to the wings and somehow our coach left Etebo(5ft tall) against their long balls when we could easily shift Ajayi to DMF and just put any idiot in CB and we would hold them off comfortably, win the first balls and their game is gone. Like this is so basic it makes no sense
