On Tuesday, the 5th of November, the team from Mino Music officially presented the prize money to the 5 winners of its first-ever gospel music contest, “Song of Glory” at a press conference in Oriental Hotel, Lagos.  This music contest which was open for gospel artistes was an offspring of the rebrand of Mino Music from Mynotjustok. 

Present at the press conference were members of the press, the Founder and CEO of Notjustok Inc; Ademola Ogundele, Nigerian gospel artiste and Notjustok Music editor Nikki Laoye, all five winners of the contest and some industry figures.

The 5 winners who were selected after a strict process of sieving through about 1000 entries across Africa are; Olayemi Lajuwomi 5th place won $500, Emmanuel Owoicho 4th Place won $500, Kenneth Okpor 3rd place won $1,500, Maxwell Rock, 2nd place won $2,500, and Kuro Jeremiah who took the grand prize of $10,000. 

Speaking about Mino Music ‘Song of Glory’ Contest and the future of Gospel artiste in Africa, Ademola Ogundele stated that while the gospel industry could arguably be the biggest music genre in Africa, it is the least commercialized and monetized and there is a great need for that to change. He went further to state that;

“The music business has changed from 5 years ago where Nigerian artistes depend solely on live shows. Now artistes are plugging themselves into the streaming platforms that are making billions of dollars a year and lucky for us, Afrobeats music is now globally recognized and diaspora is listening and paying for the content. This is something the gospel industry should also tap into… spread their music on these various monetizing platforms available including Mino music.”

The Mino Music Song of Glory Contest was done to encourage and empower upcoming gospel artistes and while the winners have been financially empowered, with gratitude they all shared their various inspiring journey throughout the competition and how such a contest in gospel industry is an encouragement to many of them who believe they don’t get the deserved attention.

Nigerian gospel artiste and Notjustok Gospel editor, Nikki Laoye who was present at the press conference talked about the great support she had received from Notjustok since the beginning of her career also laid strong emphasis on the need for Gospel artistes to promote their songs rather than always waiting for churches to call them as special guests to perform as that is not a sustainable way for them to grow.

The Multitalented Bridgy whose full names are Bridget Ogbeiwi Ovuorho was born to Henry Ogbeiwi family in Orhionmwon local government and raised in Benin City, Edo State in Southern Nigeria. She is the first daughter of nine children.

Bridgy is a gospel artiste, songwriter, worship leader and an actress. The Gospel Singer started singing at a young age as a member of a junior church choir and afterwards became a member of the senior famous Christ Apostolic Church of God Mission (C.A.C.G.M) choir, Osadiaye Branch, lead by Late Prophet Samuel.E. Ogbonmwan in Benin City.  She served as one of the lead soloist and a conductress. Bridgy performed in concerts, crusades and churches. Bridget is currently studying at the Technological University Dublin, Ireland.  She is happily married to her loving husband Oshevire Ovuorho and they are blessed with wonderful kids.

Justice, fairness and competence celebrates today, as, in affirmation of what has already been written in the annals of history, Honourable Shamsudeen Bello Dambazau, the APC House of Rep member representing the Takai/Sumaila federal constituency in Kano in the 9th Assembly, has come up victorious again against rival PDP candidate, Suraja Kanawa, in the broiling legal battle over who gets the seat at the House of Representatives.

For weeks, the good name of Hon. Shamsudeen Bello, son of former minister of interior, Lt. General Abdulrahman Dambazzau (Rtd), had been dragged and his rightful position as the representative of Takai/Sumaila constituency of Kano State in the 9th Assembly had been questioned. The good honourable who had secured three previous victories against his opponent in the case in the state and national levels had again been challenged by his opponent who had filed a claim of incompetence at the national and state Houses of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal in Kano. The challenge fell flat today when the Court of Appeal, Kaduna Division allowed Shamsudeen’s appeal and struck off Suraja Kanawa’s petition, handing deserved victory to Hon. Shamsudeen for the fourth time, and sealing his position as the rightful occupant of the contested seat in the National Assembly.

The entire affair has been a rout of incontinence from a disgruntled and fairly defeated opponent, the Senior Legislative Aide to Hon. Shamsudeen Bello Dambazau, Mr. Sadiq Samaila, made clear when questioned about the victory of the day and what the next steps are. “I am grateful to Allah SWT who has once again granted us victory today, and in effect has placed His seal of approval on our capable honourable. It has been a grueling set of weeks from tribunal to court, but in the end, justice, fairness and competence has the day, and there is cause for celebration.

Mr. Samaila continued, “Let me repeat that the mandate [of Hon. Shamsudeen Dambazau] to the people of Takai/Sumaila will never be ignored, overlooked, or taken for granted. We are well positioned to bring needed change to our constituency, and this victory proves that.”

The court of appeal held that the decision of the tribunal was null and void and the tribunal was incompetent when it assumed jurisdiction to entertain the petition as filed by the PDP and its candidate Suraja Kanawa. Since Hon. Shamsudeen was not a party in the suit at the tribunal, no order can affect him. Failure to join him rendered the judgment of the tribunal a nullity.

The court’s swift and just ruling has paved way for more from Hon. Shamsudeen Bello Dambazau.
