I licked my lips nervously as I waited for him to pick my call, was he truly with another woman? I sighed and chose to ignore what the crazy woman had said to me. I decided that she was only jealous of my youthfulness as she looked a decade older than I was.
‘Hello, Deji’? he’d finally picked. I almost jumped for joy but I held myself as the bathroom floor was slippery.

‘My darling pie, how are you baby? Sorry I didn’t call like I promised but I would make it up to you, I was in a meeting’ he spoke in a low tone.

‘Alright honey, you’re forgiven, I was so worried about you. I miss you Deji’ hearing his voice calmed me in way I failed to understand. There was tranquility in love, a sense of calmness and perfection.

‘Good, so, let’s do lunch at my place, you could sleep over if you want’ his voice sounded so seductive and my legs were like butter. I couldn’t wait to see my love, the only man that rocked my world.

‘Gladly, when should I come’? I checked my wrist watch. I was done for the day, I had presented the seminar as ordered by my boss and I had just one story to work on for the week, so I was totally free. Deji had never sounded this romantic, I couldn’t say no to him.

‘I’ll call you in the next thirty minutes, just get ready love, I want to show you how much you mean to me’ he replied.

‘I can’t wait, bye baby’ I broke off the call as I heard footsteps approaching the ladies’ .

‘My oh my, who do we have here’? Dee winked at me as she stepped into the bathroom.

‘Lover girl, hello there Juliet, where is Romeo’? Zee wore a mischievous smile on her chubby face.

‘Well, I came to drop something’ I pointed at the toilet and decided my next book would be about these two.
‘Lesbians in my hood’ I hummed as I considered that title, something was off about them, I was determined to find out.

‘Do shut the door firmly behind you’ Dee ordered as they began to UnCloth.

‘Okay’ I rushed out not wanting to see anything that would haunt me till old age.

‘Funny girl, I can’t wait to buy her ice cream when that dude breaks her poor heart’ Zee laughed.

‘Don’t be cruel now, Redeemed is an angel, she hasn’t gotten on my nerves before’ Dee replied and fetched the drug from her purse.

‘True that, she is a nice girl, I don’t know how she fell for an ass’ Zee passed the needle.

‘Well, if she gets hurt, we could offer her our special recipe’ Dee lifted the drug to Zee’s face and they both laughed.
***
‘So is that your new catch’? Jake asked as they neared Deji’s car.

‘Yea, I bleeped her a day ago, this girl is something else, so tight and full, she’s heaven men’ Deji spanked his cousin on the arm.

‘You should really grow up, you still act like a boy’ Jake wasn’t pleased.
‘And you should stop acting uptight, tell me Jake, are you a virgin’? Deji sneered at him.

‘Well, no, but how does that relate to our discussion? You have a beautiful and successful woman like Jenny who loves you dearly, why do you cheat on her, and your wedding comes up next month, how are you going to handle that’? Jake asked.

‘Well, this is the last time I’ll be cheating on her, just today and that would be it, so I plan on really cruising this chic’ Deji rubbed his palms together.

‘Whatever you do, make sure you don’t get hurt, we both know how emotional Jenny is, it could ruin her’ Jake reminded him.

‘Okay, I hear you, let’s talk about something else’ his cousin’s words made him feel slightly guilty for cheating on Jenny, she didn’t deserve that, but he couldn’t help it either.

‘Don’t let her catch you’ Jake refused to let it go.

‘Well, she’s out of town, so I’m free, what do you think about Henry Tosin’? Deji knew talking about work would distract his cousin.

‘I admire him, I can’t wait to work with him, the way I see this, Olive Groves is actually granting us an opportunity to learn from them. We cannot afford to lose this’ Jake replied.

‘Okay, I’ll have to go now, we’ll talk, take care bro’ Deji slid into his car, he couldn’t miss the appointment with Redeemed.

‘Okay bro, see you later’ he waved at his cousin.
‘Fool’ Jake muttered, minutes after Deji had driven off. He fetched his phone and searched for Jenny’s number.

‘Hello Jennifer, this is Jake’ he paused, he couldn’t wait to hear her honeyed voice.

‘Oh Jake, I should’ve met you but I was in a rush, I came to show Deji the wedding cards, I’m at the airport now, my flight would be due in an hour’s time’ she bubbled with excitement. They had all grown up together, Jennifer always had eyes for Deji and this had hurt Jake badly, why did she choose that brute over him?

‘Jenny…’ he inhaled deeply.

‘Yes Jake? Is something wrong’? she asked.

‘Deji is cheating on you, I know you wouldn’t believe me, but I need you to cancel your flight and pay him a surprise visit’ Jake answered.

‘What? Are you okay? Why would you say something like that? It’s my Deji we’re talking about, he could never cheat on me’ she doubted him.

‘I am his cousin, his brother and I hate what he’s doing to you, you have to trust me on this, just go over to his place, don’t call him, if you don’t find him with a woman, then you are free to think the worst of me’ Jake prayed she followed his instructions.

‘Oh my God, this isn’t happening, it’s just like an episode in a tragedy’ she sobbed.

‘I know it hurts, but I am doing this for you’ he answered.
‘Okay, Jake, I’ll do as you have said’ she replied.

‘Who are you stranger’? the guard asked still pointing the blade at him, he wasn’t alone, they were many others dressed like him, from what Akan could see, they were a score.

Their chests were bare and they tied leopard skin on their loins with chests painted with soot and dyes. These were warriors from Afafang, he wasn’t afraid, no, a warrior never feared he only smiled as he realized he’d reached his destination.

‘Speak, Stranger’ the guard was getting impatient with the man.

‘Hold back your sword, Aduma, set the man free’ a voice from behind commanded as the warriors parted for their prince.

‘As you wish my lord’ Aduma bowed and walked away wondering what the regal had with the strange man.

‘You must be Akan, the warrior lord we’ve heard so many stories about, our musicians sing your praises and women, even married, whisper about your handsomeness’ the Prince paused.

‘Ekong…’ Akan acknowledged the prince, they’d met in battle before.

‘That is my name, warrior, so what brings your uninvited feet to our dear kingdom? What does Ekpe-yong want with Afafang’? Prince Ekong asked

‘Something we all could share’ Akan replied noting the mocking glare from the prince.

‘Truly, our gods do not lie, we have been expecting you, come with me to the palace where you shall meet face to face with the lion of Afafang, my lord and father, King Eduwem’ the Prince commanded.

‘Very well then, I shall do as you have commanded’ Akan trailed behind him but in between two fierce looking warriors.

‘What do you think of our lands? I know Ekpe-yong is suddenly afraid we might take over from them, but you don’t have to be’ Prince Akan tried to converse while they walked towards the palace.

‘Your land is beautiful’ Akan inhaled deeply as they passed through the streets of Afafang.
The huts were larger than those in Ekpe-yong and Antai, they were colored with white clay and shells from the perinwinkle and oyster. Animals were tied at each corner and crops spread their leaves all over the place. How had they attained such greatness?

‘I see, you are still afraid we would conquer you and become sole ruler of the three clans’ Ekong scoffed.

‘What makes you think I am afraid’? Akan sneered, though the land of Afafang flowed with milk and honey, it wasn’t a secret that her inhabitants were unhappy and poor. King Eduwem was a tyrant and a very greedy man, him along his cabinet of corrupt chiefs had poisoned his brother and taken over the land.

The people paid heavy tax to them, in cowry, in livestock and in land, they lived in penury.

‘Who wouldn’t be? We know what brought you here, you have no other choice than to be afraid. Soon our land would rise and conquer yours, it is just a matter of time, but that can be averted, I believe that was why your king sent you’ Ekong said.

Yes, it was true, for the first time, Ekpe-yong was afraid, for they knew the evil nature of King Eduwem, if truly, he had something of value, a treasure that he could wield to his advantage, then, all was lost as he would stop at nothing to kill the other rulers and take over their lands. That was why his king had sent him to Afafang, to persuade Eduwem to surrender or the three clans would go into war.
‘For a prince, you talk too much’ Akan remarked and the warriors beside him frowned.

‘Leave him be, he thinks highly of himself, he is favored by the gods’ the Prince felt insulted by the warrior.

‘Ukpono enyene Obong Ekong, praises to the prince of the land, may you live long and may the works of your hand prosper’ the praise singers welcomed the prince of the land.

‘Thanks, thanks’ Ekong smiled and stepped into his father’s palace, soon everything would be his’.

‘Ah, here comes the son of my enemy, your father, King Ekpeyong has sent you on an errand, I am glad to receive you nevertheless’ King Eduwem spoke from his iron throne.

‘Ukpono enyene Obong Eduwem, praises to the king of the land, may you live long and may your works prosper, I am no son of a king, but a warrior who was sent a message to you’ Akan dropped his sword and prostrated before the king.

‘Akan, the warlord, I have seen you with my very eyes’ King Eduwem clapped his hands.

‘Fetch me, my lovely wife, the love of my old age’ King Eduwem ordered the guards.

‘Rise warrior from Ekpe-yong, tonight we shall be friends and when Dawn sets in, we begin our war’ The king ordered.

The priest had told him about the vision he had, a warrior had trespassed, but this warrior had come in peace, to send a message from his king.

‘Thank you my lord’ Akan bowed.

‘Here you are darling, why did you disturb my sleep’? a beautiful maiden ambled into the palace.

Akan was awestruck by her beauty, never in his life had he beheld such a fair woman, she was indeed very beautiful.

‘I want you to meet someone you have heard about, Akan, the warlord from Ekpe-yong’ the king pointed at him.

‘What a wonder’ the pretty maiden gasped as she ran her eyes over the most striking man she’d ever seen.

‘I knew you would like him, this is my tenth and last wife, Isang’ the King said.
‘May you live long my queen’ Akan bowed his head. Her beauty could confused a man even the wisest of them.
Isang was the youngest wife of the king, she was his favorite and she used this to her advantage.
Her brown skin was smooth and clear like honey, her legs were rounded and firm, her hips were alluring to any man, they ignited a fire in his loins and her breasts which were covered stood proudly on her chest. Isang was a paragon of beauty, her oval face contained large almond eyes which were deep brown, a well rounded nose and big red lips. She was a living goddess.

‘So, what brings you to my husband’s court’? she asked. The man that stood before her made her blood boil with lustful yearnings, she wished to have him in her bed.

‘My king sent me’he replied.

‘Good, come, let me show you where you will sleep, even a stranger deserves hospitality’ she exchanged glares with her husband, who nodded his head in approval.

‘As it pleases my queen’ he bowed before the king and followed her.

‘What do you think about him’? Prince Ekong sauntered into the palace once Akan was gone.

‘We could use him to our advantage, we can turn him over our side to win this war’the King rubbed his chin thoughtfully.

‘I do not like him, he seems very loyal to Ekpeyong, he could betray us’ Prince Ekong replied.

‘I trust he is a good man, that’s why I have allowed Isang to grace his bed for the night, I want him to know I trust him’ the king said.

‘What? How could you do such despicable thing father? Allowing a strange man love your wife’? Ekong was infuriated, how could his father allow Akan to make love to his beloved Isang?
Since the day he’d set eyes on her, he had fallen in love with his father’s wife though they loved in secret.

‘She is my property and I can do what I want with her’ the man replied fiercely.

‘As you wish father’ the prince bowed his head.

‘Now we have received news from Ekpeyong, they know we have treasure and we would win this war, what have you gotten from Antai’? the king asked, she was the weakest of all the clans.

‘The king has refused to join forces with us, but his wife, Queen Eyoita has agreed to fight with us’ the prince said.
‘How can a woman make that happen’? the king was intrigue by such bravery.

‘She plans to kill him tonight’ the prince replied.
***
*ANTAI…..*
Antai was the weakest of the three clans and they knew this, so their survival was based on tactful planning and pitching a tent on the winning side anytime disputes arose between the three clans.

‘My King, her majesty is right, Unarguably, the forces of Ekpeyong are double ours and Afafang’s combined, but I still believe we should fight with Afafang and overthrow king Ekpeyong, I have spoken to Prince Ekong, son of Eduwem, his father has made us many promises, if we fight alongside with him’ one of the chiefs spoke.

‘You have spoken well, Chief Ekpene, but I would not allow my kingdom to be involved in this power tussle between two proud and arrogant kings’ the king replied.

‘Darling husband, how can you say such a thing? In life, there is nothing like warm, it’s either you are hot or cold, there is no middle, we have to choose a side or we might as well drink poison and die’ Queen Eyoita said.

‘You’re abusing your powers as queen, you have forgotten your place as a woman’ he barked at her like a wounded dog.
‘I know your ego wouldn’t let you see the truth, Afafang has discovered treasure that would help us all and make life better, look at us, we are the weakest and poorest, if we fight with Eduwem, much fortune shall we gain’ she refused to cower before the weak man she had married.

‘Enough! I would listen to you, if you bore me a son or a daughter, you are a very barren woman and you have nothing but shame in you’ he wouldn’t be defied.

‘Alright then, my lord husband, I would take my shame and leave, don’t say I didn’t warn you’ she rose to her feet swiftly and stormed out of his court.
He had humiliated her yet again, how was it her fault that she was barren? Did a woman give herself children? Or the gods were those who blessed with the gift of fertility?

‘I shall end my shame in only one way’ she inhaled deeply and poured the extracts of the poisonous plant into the gourd she held.

‘What was that about’? he stormed into her chambers .

‘I am sorry my king and husband, I spoke foolishly, I shall never say a word in the presence of a stranger’ she fell on her knees and begged for forgiveness.

‘You know how much I hate to be defied, rise to your feet, I have forgiven you’ he rubbed he head gently.
‘I made you a drink my love, it would help you sleep and make you forget your nightmares’she offered him the gourd.

‘What’s in it? Smells very good’ he inhaled the potion.

‘Wolowo leaves and mmayang, kernel oil’ she replied and watch him gulp the potion.

‘Good morning guys, isn’t today just beautiful’? I sauntered into the office I shared with my fellow writers. It was a large office but each of us were separated by cubicles.

‘Morning Riri, you look gorg’ one of the girls smiled at me, her name was Zainab but we called her ‘Zee’.
‘What’s gorg? By the way’? I asked as I arranged my desk.

‘Gorgeous, and why do you look so radiant today? I’ve never seen you this way before’ her partner Dayo ran her eyes over me, we called her ‘Dee’.
I always suspected those two girls were lesbians, I was close to Mfon before she started hating on my Deji, but these girls? They were way too close.

‘You just had sex, admit it, don’t even lie to me’ Zee pointed a chubby finger at me.

‘What are you talking about?’ was it that obvious I had lost my virginity?

‘Oh my god, I see why she’s glowing, please honey, come and tell us how your first time was, how many times did you come? Did he hit your granfenberg spot’? Dee pouted her lips.

‘That’s gross for early morning niceties, I have to present at the conference room, excuse me ladies’ I forced a smiled and rushed out of the office.

‘God! I can’t believe she let that guy Bleep her’ Dee was the first to laugh. They somehow stumbled on the fact that Redeemed was dating the notorious Bleep boy in town.

‘I told you, she’s a naïve little bitch who walks around like she’s so experience, I thought she’d be wiser than some of the characters in her book’ Zee sneered.

‘I am curious about this Deji you know, what do girls really see in him? I gave up on love longtime ago thanks to guys like him’ Dee replied.

‘Deji Williams? He’s a hot guy’ Zee slid her tongue over her lips.

‘How hot?’ Dee raised her brows.

‘Mexican pepper hot, but he isn’t as hot as this guy, he is the C.E.O of the Olive Groves Corporation, the boss asked me to look up the company, he wants to apply for a job, we could do adverts for them, so I found this handsome man, take a look’ Zee offered Dee her phone.

‘My, My, I’m thirsty, is it hot in here? or is it just me’? Dee winked as she raked fingers over the handsome man.

‘Welcome Redeemed, I hope you are prepared for this, it’s very important to me that all of you develop skills in oratory, public speaking is part of P.R’ my boss was teaching us a few things, those of us that had been selected to present a seminar.

‘I am sir, how about Zee and Dee? Wouldn’t there be joining us’? I asked and brought out my H.P from its bag.

‘No, you’ll be the only one for today, they’re working on something huge, something that would take Lynks P.R company to its mount Kilimanjaro’ the boss replied.

‘No, Everest’ I quickly added, confusing everyone in the room.

‘What’? he asked.

‘Everest is the highest mountain in the world, so we would be at her Zenith’ I replied confidently. The girls were right, something had changed in me, I felt more relaxed and confident.

‘Wow, I see, someone now has a backbone, I like the new you’ he patted me on the back and the others chuckled.

‘Thank you sir’ I inhaled deeply, trying to take in the power that rose in me as I mounted the podium.

‘Goodmorning everybody, My name is Redeemed Akpan and I am here to speak on love and relationship, what happens when you tell your man the three lettered word, ‘I love you’? does he smile? Is he pleased? Does he return your favor? Or he just goes quiet on you? If you are in the last category, then, this is for you’ I spoke for about thirty minutes and got off the podium with the everyone applauding me.

‘She’s good, we’ll probably use her for the videos before we touch the other girls, she is a natural, speaking comes without a struggle’ one of the photographers spoke to my boss.
‘Well done, Riri, I am surprised, I didn’t know you had it in you to be this smart and confidence, no offence, I felt good writers weren’t excellent speakers, but you just proved me wrong’ he smiled at me.

‘No offense taken sir’ I returned his smile.

‘Excuse me Redeemed’ one of the ladies that would sponsor the videos lifted her hands us, I understood she had something to say.

‘Yes?’ I smiled at her.

‘I loved what you said about men that don’t return his woman’s ‘I love you’, but you missed out something vital’ she paused.

‘What might that be’? I asked.

‘Any man that refuses to acknowledge his love for you by saying those words doesn’t love you, he loves another woman and is fucking her right now, he’s probably going to get married to her and you are left hanging with false hope. His silence doesn’t mean he is shy or insecure, it simply means: You are not the one’ the woman exhaled after saying those mean words to me.
The room was silent for a minute, it’s like she had planned to ruin my day, she’d just dropped a bomb, everyone waited for it to explode.
‘Okay, excuse me’ I took what she said personal, she sounded like she knew about I and Deji and all my fears.
Was Deji really getting married? I rushed to the bathroom and dialed his number.

‘Soft one yet she looks so tough’ the woman whispered as I rushed out of the room.
‘Writers could be very emotional’ my boss rushed to my rescue.
***
Sazad Foods Limited, that was the company owned by the William family. It had existed for almost forty years but the current economic recession had plunged the company into major debts, that was why they rushed to Olive Groves Corporation for help.
It wasn’t a secret that the business empire owned by the Oluwatosin family, wasn’t just the largest in Nigeria but in the whole of Africa.
Deji greeted some of the workers and joined his elder brothers and cousins in the conference room where the meeting with the Oluwatosin family was to be held.

‘What kept you so long?’ Jake whispered into his ears.
‘None of your business’ Deji winked, he was very close to Jake, since childhood they’d loved each other like twin brothers.

‘You are fucking behind Jenny’s back, I’m going to tell’ Jake sneered.

‘I’ll kill you, you know that? I love that girl’ Deji replied.

‘Whatever, we’ll talk later, here comes the Tosin’s’ Jerked sounded a warning.

A tall and fine looking gentle man sauntered into the room like he owned it, he had this aura filled with authority, power and control all laced with arrogance.

‘I don’t like him’ Deji felt challenged by this new male specie.

‘This is business, you don’t need to like him, soon you’ll be working here, so you better learn to like him’ Jake replied.
‘I’m not gay’ Deji rolled his eyes.

‘Good morning everybody, sorry my father failed to attend this important meeting, but be rest assured I can handle everything on his behalf’ Henry Oluwatosin scanned the room as he spoke to the Williams.

‘Welcome Henry, you now run Olive Groves now, you can handle anything’ Chief Williams replied. He was Deji’s father and an Uncle to Jake.

‘Well then, let’s get started’ Henry fetched some documents from his brief case and passed it round.

‘I wonder what the bastard is up to’ Deji ran his eyes over the paper.

‘Just shut up, will you?’ Jake ignored him.

‘A merger? But that wasn’t what I discussed with your father, the plan was for your company to offer us a loan that would help us get out of our current situation and not a merger’ Chief Williams threw the paper on the table.

‘What makes you think we’ll sell our company to you’? Deji rose to his feet and faced this alpha.

‘Well, Olive Groves is expanding, our intention is to take over, that’s what this is about’ Henry eyed the weak looking young man before him.

‘Seriously’? Deji scoffed.
‘But, this merger would last for a period of ten years, after that, you can have your company back, we would pay you handsomely if you agree to this’ Henry smiled.

‘This doesn’t sound right, tell your father, to forget I asked him for help, we’ll survive on our own’ Chief Williams felt insulted.

‘Well then, remember that our door is always open, have a good day people’ Henry carefully closed his briefcase and stormed out without looking back.
He could hear the commotion that ensued after he’d walked a few steps out of the conference room, an Oluwatosin always got what he wanted,it was only a matter of time and they would come begging for help.

‘How dare he suggest we sell our company over to him’? Deji asked.

‘He thinks we would beg for his money’ Chief Williams sighed.

‘I think we should reconsider, we really need this to keep our company going, it’s only a period of ten years, isn’t too much to ask for, besides we’ll retain our name while producing, so it’s not big deal to me. Please uncle, think carefully about this’ Jake suggested.

‘Thank you Jake, I shall sleep on the matter’ the man replied and this got Deji frowning. He had heard of Henry Tosin , but he had never met him, now he did, he suddenly had the urge to outdo him.
His phone buzzed and he snapped out of his ambitious line of thought, it was Riri. He couldn’t wait to lay his hands on her, he really needed to release all the tension built inside of him.
