Matthew 10:37

I copied your post to Ai, na before una fit deceive person

That post mixes *documented facts with speculation* - here's what records show:

*What is true about Jan 15:*

The Police Special Branch report on the rebellion says this:

> When Ifeajuna finished killing in Lagos, he and Okafor "proceeded to Enugu. They arrived Enugu at about 1415 hours and proceeded to the Premier's Lodge where they held discussion with Dr. M.I Okpara, then Premier of Eastern region" ff5d

Another account from Lt-Col Ojukwu's report to Ironsi says Ifeajuna and Okafor met Okpara in the early hours of Jan 15 and had a conversation, but the subject is unknown. 4630

So yes - Ifeajuna _did_ drive to Enugu to see Okpara on Jan 15 after killing PM Balewa and others. What they discussed was never made public.

The Enugu coup attempt itself failed. Ifeajuna had sent orders for 1st Battalion to arrest ministers in Enugu and Benin, but Lt Oguchi arrived late after vehicle breakdowns. One theory for why Okpara was not killed was that the Cypriot President Archbishop Makarios was his guest that night. 4630ca1e

*What is not accurate in that framing:*

1. *"Okpara placed himself on house arrest"* - It was actually the other way around in December 1964. During the constitutional crisis, after Azikiwe initially refused to call Balewa to form government, Balewa "ordered the security agencies to place Azikiwe under house arrest". Other accounts say soldiers took over the state house, putting the Governor-General in "protective custody". 88a6bd42

Okpara did later go on radio, but he did not "step down" voluntarily - he was eventually overtaken by military events.

2. *Inferring Okpara was briefed that "all of Zik's opponents had been murdered"* - That is inference, not in any primary report. The Special Branch report lists only that a discussion was held.

*On the 1964 election / constitutional crisis - this part is largely correct:*

- Two alliances formed: NPC + Akintola's NNDP = Nigerian National Alliance (NNA). NCNC + AG + others = UPGA.
- There were disputes over 68 uncontested returns in the North.
- Azikiwe favoured postponement, Balewa insisted polling should proceed.
- UPGA boycotted, especially effective in Eastern Region.
- Azikiwe initially declined to invite Balewa to form government, creating a constitutional crisis. It lasted until Jan 4, 1965 when Azikiwe agreed to invite Balewa, with a broader-based government and supplementary elections in March 1965. f45afb10fabf

*On Zik "smuggling his name" into constitution:*

The 1963 Republican Constitution did name Azikiwe as first President as a transitional provision - because he was Governor-General. That's normal for republican transitions, not a secret clause.

*On Ironsi appointment:*

Ironsi became GOC in 1965 as the senior officer after Welby-Everard left. As President and Commander-in-Chief, Azikiwe did have a constitutional role, but it was also based on seniority.

In short: Ifeajuna _did_ go to Enugu to see Okpara on Jan 15 - documented. The rest about Okpara self-arrest and a pre-planned Zik/Ironsi plot to take over is interpretation, not established by the declassified reports.

FSBoperator:
Another lie again.

Okpara hosted the blood drenched Ifeanjuna fresh from his murderous spree on the afternoon of Jan 15 at his official residence.

Ifeanjuna drove to Enugu to meet with Okpara after he had murdered and disposed the body of the PM.

Okpara refused to tell us what Ifeanjuna came to discuss with him at his official residence.

After their meeting, Okpara made a broadcast through EBS radio service announcing a military coup had transpired and that he will be stepping down.

Okpara placed himself on house arrest at his official residence .

Is that what you call arrest ?

We all can infer that Ifeanjuna drove straight to Enugu to meet with Okpara to brief him that all of Zik's political opponents had been murdered and for Okpara to pass the message to Zik.

I will be creating a fresh topic on how Zik had become politically neutered following the collapse of the coalition govt and how the new alliance between the NPC with Akintola's NNDP alongside Niger Delta Congress that won the elections in 1964 had seen to Zik automatically losing his position as President .

Zik will however refuse to accept the results of that election in 1964 and refuse to inaugurate the new coalition govt.

Instead Zik rejected the results claiming widespread violence in the Western region and sacked Balewa as the PM.

Balewa will sack Zik back and told him he had no legal or constitutional authority to pass himself as the President.

Zik will respond that the constitutional provisions that created his office in 1963 from governor-general to HoS specifically mentioned his name.

Zik had smuggled a clause that specifically named him as HoS.

This led to the 1964 constitutional crisis.

Zik refused to accept the result of that election and refused to step down from office.

A compromise was reached to allow Zik a single 5y tenure to end in 1968.

Zik used that opportunity to appoint Ironsi as head of the army and saturated other strategic federal positions with his fellow Ibos his office had zoned to him.

From every indication, it was Zik and his Zikist mob that were the architect of Nigeria's woes.

Why did you call him criminal? I went to Google to ask if Mr. Okpara was a criminal.. he didn't even build a house . na Ogun go kpai u this GenZ

This is the response,
No — *Dr. Michael Iheonukara Okpara (1920-1984), Premier of Eastern Nigeria 1959-1966, was never convicted of any crime.*

Here is what the historical record shows:

*1. One arrest, no conviction - 1949 Enugu Coal Mine riot:*
After police shot rioting workers at the Enugu coal mines in 1949, Okpara was arrested for alleged complicity in inciting the riot as a member of the Zikist Movement. He was soon released. No charge was sustained.

*2. No corruption conviction in office:*
He was Premier from 1959 until the military coup of January 1966. Unlike many First Republic politicians, he is historically cited as an example of personal integrity:

- He "never owned a house of his own while he was in government"
- When the war ended in 1970 and he wanted to study abroad, he "could not raise the fees", and before returning from exile in 1979, his associates had to contribute to build him a house in his village Umuegwu.

He was detained after the January 1966 coup like other politicians, but survived — two other Premiers were killed — and was later released, not tried for a crime.

There are no court records of him being tried or convicted for corruption, theft, or other crimes during or after his tenure. In Nigerian historiography he is generally remembered for "pragmatic socialism," farm settlements, and industrialization of the East, not for criminality.

No you lied!!

The British colonial administration—specifically under Sir Bernard Bourdillon and the regional administrative evolution of the Southern Provinces—shifted the administrative focus and capital of the Eastern Provinces to Enugu around 1938/1939 (following its earlier role as the headquarters of the Southern Provinces starting in 1929).

Leave Igbos alone and stop the propaganda.

Which Yorubas are you talking about? I'm sure they opposed everything positive..see their behavior now....these people don't like pr0gress...
FSBoperator:
This one has come with his lies.

It is on record that Enugu was built from scratch using resources from minority people.

Enugu was the very first Abuja.

What was the rationale from moving the capital of Eastern Nigeria from Calabar to one desolate water barren land that is Enugu?

Go and read up on why western Cameroun people wanted out of Nigeria and you will see where they condemned the severe marginalisation of the minority enclaves in preference to developing Enugu.

You do know that Enugu became the capital of Eastern Nigeria in 1960 by a majority Ibo house ruling.

You do know that Enugu was dubbed the fastest growing city in the world because every resource was being channeled to building it from scratch.

As per the economy of western Nigeria, cocoa was the mainstay which Yoruba provinces dominated.

And Ibadan was already a cosmopolitan city long before independence .

There was no talk of marginalisation as a reason for wanting to have their own region by the minorities in western Nigeria.

The motivation was to have their own cultural identity which the Oba of Benin used in highlighting as a major grievance.

Did the Yorubas oppose the minority aggitarion?

Capital No.

The Yorubas instead stated that they who led the independence movement will be the biggest hypocrites to oppose the agitation of their own co Africans.

Was this the case in the East and northern Nigeria ?

Hell no.

Very eloquent and Gallant man

History with facts and figures, not fabricated lies, propaganda with zero evidence..

Things were very tough for Midwesterners to the extent that Igbos of Delta state today (Anioma), also resumed their long term agitation which was to join Eastern Igbos if Midwest creation becomes impossible.. Then Okpara and other foresight leaders had to step in to liberate them from westerners, including other leaders from parts of Today’s Delta and Edo states.

At Ibadan those days, they used to lock non yoruba traditional leaders outside, especially those that attended the Council of traditional rulers meeting late, but no record of such happening to Yoruba traditional rulers even when they were also guilty of similar offence..

A lot of incredible things happened in western region where non Yorubas minorities were subjected to a lot of ridiculous situations.

The one that broke Carmel’s back was imposing Yoruba language on non Yorubas in the western region.. Eastern Igbos couldn’t bear it anymore.

And before anyone start engaging me, provide a clear evidence to back up your claims like I did..
It's has been a long time that the tribe that starts with Y, de trouble Nigerians
