Nigerians are a special breed of people for whom the ultimate goal of democracy is victory at the polls, and noting else thereafter. If you travel a few years into the future of bygone elections and look back at the numerous excitement we have exhibited at their outcome, certainly you will ask yourself what all of that excitement was about. We no longer even talk about possible impeachment on grounds of non-performance. Democracy has become for us like a football match: we are all in it for the final score, the immediate outcome of the match - never mind that we will never come close to winning the tournament which, actually, is the reason for the match. I wonder how we will read all this when the man in the eye of the storm returns to whence he came to contest the election. Who or what is there to stop him from doing so? Especially when it is clear to him and to all that (as usual) we have been thoroughly entertained. And entertainment is the reason we cast votes. |

whirlwind7:These are words of wisdom, Whirlwind7, and I totally agree with you. Yet, we must summon the courage to contend with this evil from time to time without losing our bearing, of course. The offer of a drink is as good as the drink itself and so I thank you for your generosity even without the drink. |
valarinz:Many thanks for your input, Val. I continue to learn my lessons on Nairaland. I hear you on the 'come and pay' strategy for achieving silence. But, never underestimate the intelligence of some Nairalanders: a real buyer may lure you into that strategy and then make payment even before you have finished typing your response to him. All in all, the learning process continues and one is encouraged by the experience of fellow wayfarers as yourself. |

ckcnivek:https://www.nairaland.com/5621001/reflections-nairaland-autos-section-used-car I think you should read the thread above. While I cannot take you to task for not being a dealer and not having any clue as to what it's like to be one, you certainly must take responsibility for the conviction that you have a valid opinion on a matter that you know little about. First off, there's no room for greed in this business: you simply won't make any sales. Secondly, if it is greed (according to you) to sell a vehicle at what you erroneously believe to be an exorbitant price, what do you call your offer of 1.8m for a vehicle that you clearly stated is worth 2m? I think it's foolery and this as I have mentioned elsewhere is a major problem in trying to sell cars on Nairaland. You have way more unserious 'buyers' than real buyers. If only the unserious 'buyers' will just admire the picture of the vehicle and move on, life'll be a tad more pleasant for dealers here. But no. Never mind that I said 'call or Whatsapp', you must necessarily publicly post an offer on my thread that undermines the sense of my venture. And before I have said much, you advise me to drive the car myself. Thank you for your advice. Now, please get off my thread before I lose my cool and gift you the car for 1.8m naira - a 'gift' I doubt you're willing to accept in any case. And this calls to question all over again the point of your initial post. Do read the thread I posted its link above. It'll help. |
ckcnivek:Your response shows clearly that you're not a car dealer and nobody says that you have to be. The bolded part of your post signposts the illusion of non-dealers who, if they decide to venture into the used-car dealership business, fall victim to the Toyota/Lexus fast-sale myth that ends up surprising them the wrong way and tying down their capital for far much longer than they ever anticipated. I have sold a couple of Toyotas. And I can tell you that it was no surprise that they were the hardest sales I ever made. The simple reason for that is that the Toyota segment of the Nigerian market is hyper saturated and there are way more Toyotas on offer than there are capable buyers. There is an 06 Toyota Highlander on sale here for 3m. The general aesthetics of the vehicle is by no means up to that of the Volvo on offer here. It takes an experienced consumer to know that with good personal maintenance habit, practically any vehicle is a good vehicle - barring vehicles with documented manufacturer defects, of course. And so I have pitched my tent with Volvo and you advance the view that I should have favoured Toyota instead. This sale is on. Let's see how true your assertion is. |
ckcnivek:So, lemme break this down: it cost 1,200 dollars to ship this vehicle and 750,000 naira to clear it at the ports. Assume that I bought the said vehicle for 2,000 dollars (please see the mileage of the vehicle to know that this price is not possible - it is higher than that). Do the math. Now, help me understand the business sense in offering this vehicle to you for 1.8m naira. |
