Nigeria Youths Calls For Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun Resignation


Nigeria’s police chief have been criticise over police’ conduct during recent end bad governance demonstrations in which dozens of protesters were killed.

The Nigerian youths are asking the presidency to accept the resignation of Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, who has served in the role since 19 June 2023.

Nigeria’s protesters faced death to hold their leaders to account, as IGP Kayode Egbetokun and some anti-people politicians discourages the president from bowing to the demands of protesters.

Some of the young people behind the demonstrations had called for Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to go, with police accused of using excessive force during the protests and after the protests, the most serious crisis of Tinubu's near two-year presidency.

Nigeria’s investigative Journalists Watchdog said at least 39 people were killed in the EndBadGovernace protests.

“This is what these young protesters and many other Nigerians have been asking for. They were asking for the Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to resign because of how he handled those protests,” concern Nigerian said.

“It wasn’t just tear gas the police were using, it was also live bullets. Some people are still in hospital because they were shot. Many others died because of the shooting.”

Tinubu has not taken any series of measures to placate the demonstrators, instead the corruption among government officials are on the increase, fuel prices are on the rise, and protest organizers and participants are been harass by the Nigeria police. But this unethical act of the Government are not appeasing young Nigerians frustrated with Tinubu’s failure to deliver on his 2023 election promises to create jobs and boost their fortunes.

Initially peaceful, the protests sharply escalated in some states when police fired at crowds who stormed out to protest peacefully from August 1 to 10th, ransacking the partly ablaze protesters. While large-scale street protests have subsided, anger against the government and the police has not.

“When Nigerian Youths first went to the streets, Tinubu dismissed the protesting Nigerians as a bunch of hired goons and criminals, only to come later and start saying he will make changes,” EndBadGovernance protester, 42, told Media House.

“We will be back on the streets on October until Nigerian Youths demands are meant and all imprisoned EndBadGovernance Protesters are release. Tinubu has wasted almost two years in office travelling and telling lies,” EndBadGovernance Protester, told the Media Houses.

The Nigeria government must stop harassing protesters and restricting peaceful protests

Concerned Nigerians are worried by recent attempts by the police to harass protesters and restrict peaceful protests. Such actions are inconsistent with the constitution and Nigeria human rights obligation to respect and protect the right to freedom of expression and assembly. It also makes a mockery of Nigeria'membership among the United Nations and the commitments it has made to ensure fundamental freedoms.

On 1st of August to 10th of August 2024, Nigerians from the various states in Nigeria gathered at different places in Nigeria to protest against end bad governance that were affecting their livelihood. They had planned to hand over a memorandum but were blocked by the police. Despite this, they continued and met representatives from the government as well as some governors.

Separately, police also tried to block the ‘Endbadgovernace’ protest by allowing thugs and opposition groups to attack Protesters while the police watch without making any effort to arrest the perpetrators. The police kept demanding publicly that the organisers ‘apply for permit’ despite the law only requiring the organisers to give notice. Following the peaceful protest – in which Nigerians participated – police said they were going to question the organizers of protest over suspicious of money laundry and overthrowing existing government.

Previously, protesters were also called up by the police concerning peaceful protest marches around end bad governance protest.

“There is no basis for the police to haul up peaceful protesters for questioning. This is a clear form of harassment and to creates a chilling effect for those who want to organise protests. Further, the police must stop demanding that protesters require permission from them to undertake a protest, when all that is required is a notification. Such scare tactics call into question the reformist credentials of the bola tinubu government and its commitment to respect the right to peaceful assembly” said concern Nigerians.

Our organisations remain concerned that the Nigeria police falls short of international human rights law and standards. The law imposes onerous requirements, such as the need to provide detailed information about the planned event and its organisers. The Nigeria constitution allowed the Right to Peaceful Assembly and Association. Article 40 states that every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and in particular he may form or belong to any political party, trade union or any other association for the protection of his interests.

The Nigeria police also lacks an exception to the notice requirement for spontaneous assemblies where it is not practicable to give advance notice. Further, non-citizens are also denied the right to organise or participate in protests, which is clearly discriminatory.

“The police force should stop any further harassment against protest organisers and participants. Any attempt to silence the poor people of Nigeria from carrying out their fundamental human rights to protest would be meant by resistance from concern Nigerians.
