Arsene Wenger conceded his Arsenal team were second best following a chastening 2-0 UEFA Champions League loss at Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga outfit displayed impressive intensity throughout and goals either side of half-time from strike duo Ciro Immobile and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang were the least their efforts deserved. Arsenal brought positives from Saturday's thrilling 2-2 Premier League draw against Manchester City into the Group D clash, but must now reflect on opening their Champions League campaign with a defeat for the first time in 11 years. "I think that we were not at the requested level tonight and Dortmund deserved their win," Wenger told Sky Sports. "To concede a goal just before and just after half-time; after that the game was difficult of course. "Energy-wise they were at a higher level. Why exactly? I think they had a much easier game on Saturday than we had but it is not always scientifically predictable. "But, despite our very average performance we had plenty of chances - that's a little bit the paradox of the night. We could have been leading the game but they, as well had plenty of chances." Deadline-day signing Danny Welbeck was culpable of spurning chances immediately before both Dortmund goals, but Wenger praised the England international's overall contribution. He said: "He was dangerous. He tired in the second half. |
Chelsea attacker Eden Hazard said he believes he can still improve at Stamford Bridge. Hazard has flourished since arriving from Ligue 1 side Lille in June 2012 for a reported fee of around £32million, scoring 23 goals in two full Premier League campaigns. The Belgium international was awarded Chelsea's Player of the Year award last season, while he also won the PFA's Young Player of the Year gong after netting 14 goals in 35 league appearances. Hazard has already scored once in Chelsea's four league matches this term. Chelsea are eager to tie the 23-year-old down to fresh terms, with manager Jose Mourinho confirming talks are underway over a new long-term deal as a result of his fine performances. However, Hazard said there is room to improve as he attempts to win the Premier League title. "I can be better. Last season was very good, and the first season [at Chelsea] as well. Now I am in the third season and if I can win trophies, it could be better," Hazard told Sky Sports. "Personally, if I continue like this and score more goals and make more assists, but most important is trophies at the end." Hazard also revealed Chelsea's UEFA Champions League success in 2012 was a factor behind his decision to make the move to London. "Yes [it enhanced my ambition to play for Chelsea]. When they won the Champions League, after that season, I chose Chelsea," he said. "Now I am very happy. I hope we can win the Champions League again." |
Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola insists Manchester United were unable to afford his star players, despite their pre-season spending spree. The Premier League club have brought in the likes of Angel di Maria, Daley Blind and Radamel Falcao in recent weeks but were reportedly also interested in Bayern trio Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben and Bastian Schweinsteiger. United manager Louis van Gaal has worked with the three Bayern players at either international or club level previously but all three remain at the Allianz Arena ahead of the German champions' UEFA Champions League opener against Manchester City on Wednesday. Despite United investing heavily in their new-look side, having missed out on European qualification last term, Guardiola maintains their financial clout was not enough to tempt his big-name players. "They didn’t have enough money," he said on Tuesday. "I saw they spent a lot of money and it's good for my friend Louis. It's part of the game. All of the clubs in the world want the players of anther club but it depends on the player. "If the player wants to play he will play. If he wants to stay he will stay. Manchester wants these kinds of players." United will not feature in Europe during Van Gaal's maiden campaign after a miserable season last time out under his predecessor David Moyes in which the 20-time English champions finished seventh. Guardiola feels United's struggles should serve as a warning for Europe's elite as to the unpredictable nature of top-level football. "It's a good lesson for the big clubs," he added. "They think 'we are unbeatable and strong' and they are not here and maybe the next season they are out. "That's why football is magnificent. Every single week you have to be ready. Every week you have got to show you are ready. A bad 45 minutes and you're out Source:http://sports.opera.com/?sport=news&page=news&view=article&news_id=430647&localization_id=www> |
