Samsung 48"JU6400 6 Series Flat UHD 4K Smart LED

Picture quality
With a screen size of 48 inches, UHD (4K resolution) is well worth having, and with a UHD source, you can really appreciate the fine detail this big screen is capable of handling. Having said that, there's precious little UHD content available at present, although that will improve as Netflix and Amazon roll out more 4K content, and Blu-Ray players adopt a new UHD standard. In the meantime, the TV is capable of upscaling HD content very well. With standard definition TV programmes, the result is less impressive, and the low quality of the source material will be apparent on a screen this big with such a high resolution. That's really a general feature of all large screens.
This screen is typical of what we've come to expect from Samsung in recent years. It's capable of delivering extremely dark blacks, whilst also managing bright, vivid colours. The dynamic contrast is impressive, although some shadow detail can be lost in darker scenes. Motion response isn't the fastest we've seen, and this can have the effect of softening the UHD pictures, although most viewers won't be aware of this.
The Direct LED backlighting manages very uniform results, with no visible light pooling or clouding.
A range of settings are available. Movie mode guarantees the best colour accuracy, while Game mode is recommended for PS4/Xbox gamers wanting to minimise input lag

Audio quality
The JU6400 has average audio performance for a mid-range TV. The twin speakers are rated at 10W, which is typical, and with no dedicated subwoofers, bass is lacking, and depth can be weak, especially when you consider the size of the TV. For normal TV viewing, audio quality is quite acceptable, with dialogue produced reasonably well, but sound effects in movies are poorly reproduced. We'd certainly recommend investing in a sound bar or full 5.1 home cinema kit to accompany this TV.
Smart TV
Samsung's Smart TV system has been overhauled for 2015, and is now based on the open-source Tizen operating system. The new system is nicely integrated into the TV's operation, and lets you select apps and input sources with ease.
You'll find streaming services Netflix and Amazon, as well as catch-up TV from the BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, All 4 and Demand 5. Other apps include YouTube, a web browser, games, Skype, Facebook and Twitter.
Be aware though that not all of these services/apps are yet available. Samsung says that they will be coming shortly.
Connectivity
The JU6400 has excellent connectivity. A Freeview HD tuner is built in, and internet access is provided by Wi-Fi and an ethernet connection. There are 4 HDMI ports (including ARC and MHL compatibility), 3 USBs, an optical audio output, plus composite and component inputs, and a headphone jack, but no SCART.
Other options include DLNA and screen mirroring for compatible smartphones and tablets.
Note that in the past, users have sometimes complained of lip-sync issues with the tuners in Samsung TVs and this may continue to be an issue for some users.

Samsung 50"JU6800 6 Series Flat UHD 4K Nano Crystal Smart TV

Picture quality
The JU6800 replaces the JU6740 as the best in the Series 6 range, with a Picture Quality Index (PQI) of 1400. There are several reasons why it's rated so highly.
First of all, this is a UHD (4K) screen, capable of displaying an incredible amount of detail, if you feed it with a 4K source, such as Netflix 4K. Native 4K material is scarce at the moment, but hold tight - it is coming. For the moment, you'll need a fast internet connection to stream it. The majority of your viewing will probably be HD for the foreseeable future, and the JU6800 upscales this effortlessly to 4K resolution. Standard definition content can look a little jaggy on a screen this big, but that's a problem common to all big screens.
Secondly, this is a VA-type screen with a very high native contrast ratio. That means that it can reach the very deepest blacks, as well as achieving good brightness levels. UHD dimming helps to reach even greater contrast ratios, while retaining plenty of shadow detail. Backlighting is nice and uniform, with very little clouding.
Thirdly, this is the first Series 6 model to feature Samsung's new nano crystal technology. The JU6800 doesn't have the full capabilities of the more expensive Series 8 & 9 TVs, but it delivers a wider colour gamut than standard UHD screens, for more natural colours. It's a subtle effect that not everyone will notice, but worth having.

Audio quality
You won't notice anything out of the ordinary when it comes to sound quality. This is very much a mid-range sound system, with two 10W speakers producing good mid-range frequencies, but lacking in bass. It's good enough for general TV, but movie buffs will benefit from adding a sound bar or a full home cinema kit.

The screen has four HDMI inputs, all HDCP 2.2 compatible, so they can be used for 4K sources such as a UHD Blu-ray player, games console and set top box.

Smart TV (WebOS 3.5)
LG has made a number of revisions to the 3.5 iteration of its webOS connected platform, but (thankfully) none too radical. The UI is as intuitive as ever, offering simple navigation and powerful customisation.
The Home screen is built around a striped Launch Bar for apps, inputs and features. Live TV and HDMI selection claim the early slots, followed by streaming apps and catch-up TV services. Keep on scrolling and the list changes to features, including that OLED gallery, Screen Share for casting from mobile devices, and multimedia playback (Photos, Music and Video). The order of this listing can be customised. If you Miracast a lot, simply grab the Screen Share tab with the remote and drag it to where you want it.
The remote control has dedicated buttons for both Netflix and Amazon. Rather neatly, these streaming apps remain open and live, even when you navigate away from them. This means you can pause House of Cards, check the news on Live TV, and then return to your paused episode.

Design:
The most notable aspect of the UE49KU6400 is the generously-sized display panel. Measuring in at 49 inches, it can occupy most rooms confidently without overcrowding them in the process. It’s beautifully slim too, with an off-stand depth of only 55mm, making this a superb choice for wall-mounting. The whole design is sleek, modern and understated, exuding a definite level of quality that has been missing from mid-range televisions for some time now.
The stand was an initial niggle, with 4 legs supporting the screen over a more popular flat base plate, but after spending more time with the UE49KU6400 we feel it complements the overall design superbly, in keeping with the slim profile of the television itself.

Picture Quality:
The most important aspect of any prospective television, how does the Samsung UE49KU6400 pair up against the competition? Well, you get a fully-fledged 4K Ultra HD resolution display – four times the pixel density of Full HD – that has a number of picture processing technologies and high dynamic range (HDR) capabilities. Considering the modest price, we’d say it holds up very well indeed.
Picture quality has been superb in all of our tests. Images on-screen were crisp, vibrant and bursting with character – the kind of quality we’d expect from a much more expensive television. Support for HDR content is a sure sign that the UE49KU6400 has a wide colour and brightness palette as there is a minimum specification that must be met for HDR content to be accurately displayed. Blacks are impressive and believable, whilst whites are incredibly bright – HDR Ultra HD content is the absolute pinnacle of quality and this Samsung TV delivers with aplomb.
