Yes
There's a tiny spindle on the OEM thermostat that's opened by water pressure even before it's the thermostat's opening temperature.

Idle is fantastic. Keep trouble shooting. Would need more live stream data of your engine to ascertain if your poor mpg is due to an electrical component or mechanical.

I honestly don't know the temperature rating of this thermostat. It was bought tokunbo and the rewire just fix it immediately. I later realize that the code had refused to go and the upper radiator hose always become too hot at around 60 degree.

LTFT is learned over time from your driving pattern and engine performance.....
That you are getting -18 after an ecu reset is normal. Drive around for days and report back.

The temperature rating is indicated on the thermostat.

I feel the thermostat is stuck open. However, remove and physically inspect it.
I'm assuming it was installed properly and your cooling system bled.

That aside, it isn't soley responsible for the poor mpg.

What is your idle rpm after warmup?

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some technical insight on a persistent fuel consumption issue (currently getting only 10 MPG) on my 2006 Honda Civic. I have already restored the cooling fan to factory settings and installed a new thermostat, but P0128 (thermostat below regulating temperature) keeps returning and the car vibrates. I have confirmed that the vibration is not coming from my mounts.



I performed a cold-start test today with my scanner to watch the Short Term Fuel Trim (STFT) vs. Coolant Temp (ECT). Here is the data:

At 34°C (Startup): Upper radiator hose was at ambient temp. STFT was extremely rich, fluctuating between -12% and -22%.

At 60°C: The upper radiator hose became very hot and untouchable.

At 96°C: Cooling fans triggered normally. STFT finally stabilized between -3% and -5%. LTFT immediately improved from -20% to -17%. Engine load at this point revolves around 36%

My Analysis:
Since the upper hose is getting hot at only 60°C, I suspect the new thermostat is opening much too early or stuck open (it should stay closed until ~78°C I guess). This seems to be keeping the car in "cold-start" enrichment mode for too long, causing the massive negative fuel trims and poor MPG.

I previously had other codes pointing to the EGR valve and ECT sensor which I sorted by replacing the part's and codes disappeared

My Questions :

Given that the trims improve once the car finally hits 96°C, am I right to assume the thermostat is the "smoking gun"?

My local "rewire" says I can only find "Tokunbo" thermostat, but I’m worried about reliability. Has anyone had success with specific aftermarket brands for the R18 engine, or is OEM the only way to clear P0128?

Could this "rich" condition be the cause of a heavy vibration that worsens when the AC is turned on?

You can always test the thermostat in boiling water before installing.
What is the temperature rating of this new thermostat?
It should be 87deg.

P0128 won't cause engine vibrations.
Have you done a tune up?( Spark plugs, air filter, etc)

Your fuel trim numbers are ok.

What's your idle rpm at warm up?

I don't understand what is happening, AC compressor smokes anytime I run it. Decided to take to technician to check. He said that the compressor is bad but I need to change the radiator from single cell to double cell if i want to replace compressor. He claimed that the car will experience overheating when I run the AC on a single cell radiator.

Please am I missing something or ??

Bad compressor clutch plate probably due to ignored bad bearings.
Replace clutch plate, bearing, and coil.

Dont change to double cell bla bla .

To all gurus in the house, what is the effect of reintroducing thermostat which had run for years without it? Car is honda accord 2009 and pick it up last month. Had overheating issues 2 weeks ago, mechanic said radiator was blocked and did a flush. While bleeding the system after re-installation of radiator, discovered that the car had no thermostat. Before then, I know that the temperature guage raises and stays in the middle but now, after the flush, it takes a while for the guage to rise. I don't know how long ago the thermostat was removed and I want to be careful so as not the cause further issues on the engine.

Optimal engine performance and fuel economy.
Fix an 87degree thermostat first and observe before returning cooling fans to OEM settings.

Good afternoon
I have a 2007 Honda pilot which I've been driving the last 4 years. Early this month I started experiencing loss of power after slowing down for bumps. Since it was close to service time I decided to do a full service; changed oil, oil filter, air filter and spark plugs. The loss of power still occurs whenever I come to a stop and is now accompanied by high rpms ( sometimes as high as 2000) and very serious vibrations.
I have a small scanner which gave 3 codes;
P0141
P2647
I can't remember the last one but it says "intake air temperature low".

The mechanic has cleaned the throttle body ( twice , in place and removed) , the EGR , the MAP sensor and the manifold.
After each round of cleaning, the codes where cleared but after 10-15 minutes driving the vibration and high rpm return when I stop the car.
Please , any ideas?

This is responsible. But don't just replace the rocker arm actuator/ VTEC solenoid.
Clean first with carb cleaner.
Also check your pcv valve.

Good evening gurus and experience drivers nd mechanics in the house, I think my Camry 2013 is having a gear issue.. bought the car from a lady about 3 weeks ago, a scan was done on it which was fine apart from missing catalyst and engine was very sound and untouched . everything seems fine apart from the fact that it was badly maintained.. Did some body works( full oven baked) changed headlamp etc . A week later, I noticed a slight kick while driving.. like when I hold break and try to accelerate again, I notice a slight kick so I took it to the mechanic and he said seems the gear oil needed to be topped.

Went to another mechanic the next day for the oil topping and he drained the old oil claiming the oil was bad and smells burnt so changed it, but made a grave mistake due to ignorance by putting in ibeto oil. The following day the issue got worse and this time my engine was lifting up when I engage reverse or drive. Made research that night and realised the wrong oil was used instead of Toyota WS. Went back to the mechanic very mad at him and he claimed Toyota doesn’t select oil lol… had to call another mechanic that confirmed ibeto oil was the wrong oil since it’s too thick.

The next day I was directed to a gear technician that said the car needs a reset or calibration . He did it successfully by tapping two wires around the battery area and also drained the complete ibeto oil and put in 8 litters Ws oil.. the car worked perfectly after that but I noticed oil was leaking from the bottom plate two days later and I went back and they fixed it and car was working well again.

Now after driving the car for 3 days, the engine lifting up or shaking vigorously when I engage reverse or drive has started again. U can physically see the engine shaking heavily like the engine seating is not holding it up well when I open the bonnet. Also, when I went out today, it did some delayed reversing. Outside this, car drives smooth, doesn’t jerk but I hope this is not a serious issues.. I need advice like this.. I’m spending so much on it already.

The car is even for sale as I’m starting out in car sales.

Check your engine mounts.
When buying Nigeria used cars, ask if the transmission has been serviced before. If yes, RUN.
I'm of the opinion that the only reason you need to replace transmission fluid is when there is a leak.

How is the speed checked or set? The rewire that bypassed the fan said the speed was okay and he put a nylon in front of the radiator and it sucked it in.

Both fans ideally blow at different speed and cycle.

Replace the radiator cap.
Make sure the pressure rating on the replacement is 1.1.
