The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) says it is prepared to join forces with significant key partners in the instruction division in helping jail detainees to have simple access to training.


The council’s Head of National Office (HNO), Mr. Olutise Adenipekun, told the Journalists on Wednesday in Lagos that such collaboration would enhance the inmates’ transformation and development.
Adenipekun said there is life after prison, adding that there is need to encourage the inmates to acquire education.
“Education in the prisons is an area I am passionate about as a key stakeholder in the education sector.
“If anyone should find himself or herself behind the bars, that does not mean the end of the world for such.
“So, WAEC as an organisation, has brought into the vision that behind the bars life must continue.
“Because after getting out of prison, they still come back to the society to carry on with normal life.
“That is why we should partner those organisations that may want to assist the inmates to access education and other external examinations such as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for private candidates,” he said.

Understudies from different higher foundations of learning in Osun State on Monday went in the city of Osogbo, the Osun State money to dissent a raise in their educational cost expenses.

He, however, advised the students to ” handle their reservations for increase in some fees payable in their institutions with maturity, sense of responsibility and reality of the situation at hand”.

It is valued at $15,000 per year

Application Process

A candidate should have achieved a first-class average, (minimum of A-/80%)*, in EACH of the last two full-time academic years (eligibility averages are based on grades up to August 31, 2017).
Transcripts are required from all post-secondary institutions attended, whether a degree was received or not; graduate transcripts are required even if fall 2017 is the first term in the program.

The same scholarship application form is also used to evaluate a candidate for Queen Elizabeth II Graduate Scholarship in Science and Technology (QEII-GSST), which is also valued at $15,000 per year.

Students have the option to take up the OGS or QEII-GSST award for a minimum of two terms (receiving $10,000 total) or three terms (receiving $15,000 total). The awards are non-renewable.

Selection is made based on the following criteria:

#1 Academic Excellence (30%) – As demonstrated by academic transcripts, awards and distinctions

#3 Leadership in development of civil and sustainable society in home country (40%) – Established record of leadership in professional, academic or volunteer work – as demonstrated in personal statement; work experience, community involvement and other extracurricular activities; communication skills; and letters of appraisal

#9 Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are offered by the Canadian government to international students undertaking postgraduate study within the natural and social sciences or health research. Here are the key points of this scholarship:

70 fellowships are awarded annually; a total of up to 140 awards are active at any time
Valued at $70,000 per year and for a maximum of 2 years

Timelines

April – September – Applicants seek endorsement from host institution to apply, prepare and submit application (institutions may have internal deadlines).
September 20, 2017 – Deadline for complete application submission
Mid February, 2018 – Applicants are emailed about results
April to October 2018 – Payment begins

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships-Master’s (CGS M) Program is to help develop research skills and assist in the training of highly qualified personnel by supporting students who demonstrate a high standard of achievement in undergraduate and early graduate studies. Teaching Assistantships (TA)

TA’s work a maximum of 10 hours per week
Research Assistantships (RA)
RAs are hired by faculty members (normally your supervisor) to assist with a research project that will be directly related to your own research. RAs are paid for with funds from the faculty member’s external contracts or research grants.

The employment consists of on-campus work where you may be asked to help with the research being conducted, such as scholarly review of journals, conducting experiments, recording data, conducting interviews, etc.

The following are some key points about RAs:
Value: Varies depending on the Researcher
Requirements: a minimum GPA of 84% or higher
The guidelines for RA employment are normally determined by the agency, council or business providing the contract or grant to the faculty member
Merit Scholarships
These scholarships are based on your academic grades of your previous degree and are available for top-quality students. Recommendations for these scholarships are made by your department during the application. These scholarships are valued at $1,000 – $12,000 per year.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has banned the use of wrist watches and pens by candidate during the 2018 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

According to the JAMB Registrar, Prof. Is’haq Oloyede, who disclosed this to newsmen on the sideline of the sensitisation workshop for Computer Based Test (CBT) centre owners on Wednesday in Lagos, the workshop was to appraise the registration and conduct of the 2017 examination.

Foreign based candidates would pay the sum of $20 dollars per candidate as against $100 and 150 dollars paid in 2017 for candidates in Africa and outside Africa, respectively.
Candidates should note that e-PINS being purchased are tied to individual profile and are not transferable. Candidates are advised to keep as confidential their security details such as registration numbers, password/ numbers of ATM Cards, e-mail addresses and E-Pins.

Report reaching us that the board of trustee of the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, has withdrawn the earlier released merit admission list for 2017/2018 academic exercise.


It was disclosed that the Deputy Registrar of the university, Mr. Oluwatoyin Adebule, when contacted to comment on this said: “As a responsible institution, the management withdrew the list to investigate the veracity of the allegation of irregularities levelled against it.”
