WHAT IS FACILITY MANAGEMENT?
‘What is Facility Management (FM)?’ is a question that is often asked by building
owners and occupiers as well as professionals in the property industry. Well,
here are some definitions taken from various websites:
· ‘All services required for the management of buildings and real estate to
maintain and increase their value.’
· ‘The means of providing maintenance support, project management and user
management during the building life cycle.’

· 'The integration of multi-disciplinary activities within the built environment and
the management of their impact upon people and the workplace'.
All of these definitions are correct; essentially Facility Management or Facilities
Management as it is commonly called in Europe is quite simply the management
of buildings and services. This sounds suspiciously close to Property
Management (PM) and of course so it should as FM developed from PM and the
two are fundamentally linked. However, FM has a much wider definition than
traditional PM services.

The International Facility Management Association (IFMA), the Worlds leading
FM professional body, defines FM as, ‘A profession that encompasses multiple
disciplines to ensure functionality of the built environment by integrating people,
place, process and technology.’ That sounds a bit long winded but it accurately
identifies the management of multi-disciplines through people, process and
technology.

Typically FM might be split into two areas of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ services. The hard
services relate to the actual fabric and building systems and might also be
considered as the more traditional PM services. These include:

How do bedbugs feed?
Bedbugs are generally most active just before dawn. Their peak feeding period is about an hour before sunrise. They do feed at other times, too.
If all of this isn't enough to give you insomnia, consider this: they often climb the walls up to the ceiling and then jump down on their human victims, when they feel the warmth of your body and the presence of carbon dioxide rising up.
The bedbug pierces the skin of its host (you) with two hollow tubes. With one tube it injects its saliva, which contains anticoagulants and anesthetics, while with the other it withdraws the blood of its host. After feeding for about five minutes, the bug crawls back to its hiding place. Normally, the victim won't feel the bites until minutes or hours later, as the skin reacts to the injected agents. The first sign of a bite usually comes from the desire to scratch the bite site.

Although bedbugs can live for a year or as much as eighteen months without feeding, they typically seek blood every five to ten days. Bedbugs that go dormant for lack of food often live longer than a year, well-fed specimens typically live six to nine months. Low infestations may be difficult to detect, and it is not unusual for the victim not to even realize they have bedbugs
How to recognize symptoms of bedbug bites
Since bedbugs inject an anesthetic so you won't feel them bite, you generally will only notice their bites after they have gone back into hiding. The bedbug bites usually affect only the surface of your skin, leaving a small itchy red raised mark. Sometimes the bites appear in a line or cluster, when the bedbug feeds repeatedly.
You might find the lesions in a linear or clustered fashion, indicative of repeated feedings by a single bedbug. Patterns of bites in a row or a cluster are typical as they may be disturbed while feeding. Bites may be found in a variety of places on the body.
It can be difficult to distinguish bedbug bites from other insect bites. Bed bug bites usually:
• are red, often with a darker red spot in the middle of the bite
• Itch
• appear in a line or clustered together
• are located on the face, neck, arms and hands
Some people have no reaction at all to bedbug bites. People who are allergic to the bites may see a reaction in their skin, like larger, itchy bite marks (as big as 6 to 8 inches across - 20 cm), blisters, sometimes filled with pus and other marks of an allergic reaction, like hives
Protect yourself and your luggage from bed bugs
• Remove the bedspread from the bed (it is rarely cleaned),
• Encase pillows in dustmite covers or bring your own, encased pillows,
• Keep your suitcases tightly closed (hard suitcases are better than fabric) except for the moment you need to get something out.
• Keep all of your luggage elevated on the metal luggage stand. (Bed bugs cannot climb smooth metal). Also pull the luggage rack away from the wall. This will reduce the likelihood of the bugs crawling up the wall and getting into your luggage.
• If there is no metal, folding luggage stand, use an ironing board to store your luggage.
When you get home
• Do not take your luggage into your home
• Unpack the suitcases outside or in your garage
• Immediately wash all washable clothes in how water and dry in a dryer
• Put dry clean only clothes into a plastic garbage bag, seal it tight (tight the opening in a knot) and take to the dry cleaners.
• Empty the suitcase outside, and thoroughly inspect and shake it out.
• If the weather is below freezing, leave the suitcase outside overnight

Treating Bird Mites
Bird mites are parasites that feed on the blood of birds and use their nests as breeding places. These mites can greatly endanger the health of affected birds and are capable of causing skin irritation in humans. While bird mites will die within 10 days if they are denied food, it is rarely possible to eliminate bird populations in areas affected by these arachnids. They tend to inhabit poultry houses and farms, as well as homes with pet birds.
Bird mites are present in humid conditions and breed most prolifically in spring and early summer. These times are also the best times to treat bird mites, as their increased populations lead to increased visibility. However, it is recommended that poultry houses experiencing bird mite infestations be treated at least twice a year.
In controlling bird mites around homes, the removal of bird nests is the most important step. Areas surrounding identified breeding sites should be inspected for additional nests, as well. Following the disposal of all infested nests, insecticide treatments may be applied to treat visible specimens.

Bird Mite Removal
Although bird mites rarely cause more than slight skin irritation in humans, they pose great danger to a variety of birds, including pet birds and poultry. Those wishing to remove bird mites from a home or farm often attempt superficial methods such as the application of insecticides. While this method may temporarily prove successful, infestations will resurface after surviving specimens begin to breed again.
Identification of the pest is crucial to the success of any extermination procedure. Improper identification can render all control efforts useless.
It is also necessary to locate and discard all nests of pest birds in the affected area. Nests are commonly found in eaves, chimneys, roof spaces, window ledges and small cracks or cavities in walls. On poultry farms, all nesting materials need to be replaced.
Nesting areas will also require application of appropriate pesticides to ensure removal of bird mite populations. Repair of creases in walls, eaves and ledges may discourage further nest building. These procedures should be undertaken on a regular basis to ensure effectiveness

Bird mites are ovoid in shape, bear eight legs and have short hairs on their bodies. Because they are small and semi-transparent, infestations may thrive for some time prior to identification. Bird mite populations are extremely destructive and grow rapidly; eggs hatch after three days and mature into adults within another five.
Although bird mites are not selective in choosing a bird host, they remain loyal to and often spend their entire lives on the host they do choose. If a host dies, thousands of mites migrate in search of a new host. While these wandering mites have been known to bite humans, they do not attempt to infest human hosts long-term. Bird mites are not capable of surviving for more than 10 days without a food source.
To eradicate a bird mite population from the home, it is necessary to locate their breeding and nesting sites. Bird mites tend to reside within the nests of their hosts; so all such nests must be removed. Specific pesticides should then be applied in the nesting area in order to prevent future infestations.

Ants Facts
There are more than 700 ant species found in the around the world. Although only about 25 species commonly infest homes. Ants are social insects that typically live in underground colonies, made up of workers and a queen. Ants will eat practically any kind of food, but are especially attracted to sweets. Ants are easily identifiable due to their three distinct body region: head, thorax and abdomen, as well as antennae. Here are the few common ones found around homes;

Argentine Ants
Argentine ant colonies can grow to monumental size. Their colony borders sometimes cover entire habitats. Argentine ant queens also assist with foraging for food. The ant gives off a musty odor when crushed. Worker argentine ants are about one sixteenth of an inch long. Queen argentine ants are one eighth of an inch to one quarter of an inch long.

Caribbean Crazy Ants
Caribbean crazy ants get their common name from the worker’s habit of running in an erratic, jerky manner when searching for food.

Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants get their name because they excavate wood in order to build their nests. Their excavation results in smooth tunnels inside the wood. Carpenter ants range in size from one-quarter inch for a worker ant to up to three-quarters inch for a queen.

Odorous House Ants
The odorous house ant gets its name from the strong, rotten coconut-like smell it gives off when crushed. These tiny insects range in size from one-sixteenth of an inch to one-eighth of an inch long.

Pavement Ants
Pavement ants get their name because they make their nests in or under cracks in pavement. They can infest structures.

Red Imported Fire Ants
Red imported fire ants nest in soil and build mound nests. They can infest garages.

Mosquitoes Facts
One of the best known summer pests, mosquitoes breed in stagnant water or soft soil and can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days.
Habits
Female mosquitoes suck our blood. Male mosquitoes feed on plant nectars. They can develop from egg to adult in 10 to 14 days. They are most active from dusk to dawn and will fly up to 14 miles for a blood meal.
Habitat

Threats

Flies Facts

House Flies
