The always dapper, Ryan Reynolds, nominated for his role in “Deadpool,” wore a Piaget Altiplano 38mm timepiece in 18-carat rose gold on a black alligator strap. Reynolds is a Piaget brand ambassador. Also decked out in Piaget were Matt Damon, producer of “Manchester by the Sea,” who wore an ultra-thin Piaget Altiplano 40mm 18k rose gold watch, and “Stranger Things” star, David Harbour, who also wore an Altiplano on the red carpet.

There are two answers here, of course, the short version and the long version. The short version is simple: Rolex and Patek Philippe.

The longer version is a bit more complicated, as there are a number of aspects that play an important role. I am not talking about the annual price increases that many brands are carrying through with, using all sorts of lame excuses. Aspects such as brand recognition, heritage, exclusivity, availability, and – perhaps the most influential of all – demand are important when it comes to the development of a watch’s value over time.

Rolex is, of course, one of those brands that is highly in demand (by both watch enthusiasts and non-watch enthusiasts); has a wonderful heritage, including an impressive list of celebrities and VIPs that wear and have worn Rolex watches; has a high level of recognition; and is widely available. It seems that the right mixture of these ingredients make most Rolex watches increase in value over time. Tudor Heritage Black Bay was launched in 2012 and since then, it is the brand’s largest success. We can even argue that this watch brought Tudor on the front of the scene, under the spotlights, a position that Tudor has never really seen. The Tudor Heritage Black Bay is a vintage-inspired dive watch, which does nothing else than that, but it does it well. The dial is 90% similar and evolves in the details. While the old BB had the vintage “Rose” logo printed at 12, in-between the large triangle marker and the name “Tudor”, it now bears the actual logo of the brand, the shield – be reassured, the rose is still present on the crown. In order to mark the arrival of a COSC certified in-house movement, the “smile” that was printed at 6, with “Rotor – Self-Winding” is now replaced by more classical inscriptions linked to the pedigree of the movement. We now find two lines of text with “Chronometer – Officially Certified”, just below the “200m : 660ft” depth rate inscription. This is the evolution we certainly like less. The old “smily face” of the Black Bay had a certain outdated charm. The new one is more serious, more technical.

The bracelet has been replaced by something very, very pleasant, a sort of tribute (with the quality of the 2010s) to the antique rivet bracelets that could be found on the early Tudor Submariners. These were famous for having rivet heads for attaching the links in evidence on the side of the bracelet, as well as a stepped construction.The old Tudor Heritage Black Bay had a serious bracelet, with a look close from the Oyster bracelets. It consisted of 3 solid links next to each other, with side links being slightly cut, to create a straight line from the lugs to the buckle. The new bracelet shows this specific stepped construction. The links are perfectly straight and you can see the changes in width from a link to another. The sides are adorned with rivets (which are the end of the transversal bars) and closing pieces, even if, unlike the old rivet bracelets, the links are now full (and not folded). The finishing remains the same, with flat surfaces satined and sides polished. The buckle is also equal – a rather simple but solid folding clasp.

Inside the case of the RM 030 beats an automatic caliber featuring a rotor that declutches automatically. With this system, the winding barrel is automatically disconnected from the rotor’s winding mechanism at the moment when the spring is fully wound. Additionally, this mechanism is linked to the power reserve indicator to provide optimal winding control. This allows both the movement and the oscillator to work with the best ratio of constant torque/power to provide the best chronometric performance.

Some people will probably want me to define a few of these terms, and they would be right to demand things such as “what is a woman’s watch?” It is true that, strictly speaking, so long as a watch physically fits on the wrist, anyone can wear it. By women’s watch I mean a timepiece specifically designed for feminine aesthetics, in smaller feminine sizes (35-36mm wide and under), and that also often combine the appeal of jewelry. When I think of some famous women’s watches, what comes to mind are timepieces such as the smaller versions of the Rolex Datejust, Cartier Tank Francaise, Chanel Premiere, and Breguet Reine de Naples. Women don’t always wear “women’s watches,” though, and often wear two other categories of watch that are a bit more complicated to define. These categories are unisex watches and men’s watches. Not everyone believes in unisex watches because they feel that the designs are inherently made for one sex or another. This is typically the outcome of an otherwise men’s watch which is reduced in size enough for many female wrists. A good example is a men’s sports diving watch that is normally 42mm wide, made in a 38mm-wide case and suddenly labeled unisex. The reason it is not called a woman’s watch is because it is not primarily designed for a woman, and if there is a man with wrists that might otherwise measure into female wrist-size norms, he can still wear it and not look strange.

What I do feel about many unisex watches is that they are only unisex for a short period of time before one sex or another decides to appropriate them. This can actually go back and forth as a watch begins its life as being for men and later losing favor by being mostly worn by women. But how does this happen? I’ll get to my theory on this psychology in a bit.

After women’s watches and unisex watches, we predictably have “men’s watches.” What makes this group distinct is that even if a woman wears this watch it remains utterly masculine in its appeal, without any perceived “macho loss” from a woman wearing it. This is very important to consider because a men’s watch is still a men’s watch on a woman’s wrist, but a unisex watch becomes a women’s watch when on a woman’s wrist. Each of these timepieces have appeal to women, but for different reasons that I think men should actually think about if only to not be turned off certain timepieces.

Hublot have teamed with the Bruce Lee Foundation to celebrate the “Legend Never Dies: Bruce Lee 75th anniversary Memorial Exhibition.” In conjunction with the celebration of Lee’s life in Hong Kong during the last week of November at the Harbor City Shopping Mall in Tsim Sha Tsui, Hublot unveiled two new limited edition pieces, the Hublot Spirit of Big Bang for Bruce Lee. The Heuer Carrera was launched in 1963, unveiled until 1964. This was long before sport chronograph watches had any mainstream popularity in the United States, and Heuer was mainly known as a producer of stopwatches for race car drivers. The Carrera was originally intended as a tool watch mostly to be used by drivers and racing aficionados, but over the last 50 years it has become one of the most recognizable product lines in all of horology. The Carrera was waterproof, shockproof, and anti-magnetic. As for legibility, the dial is clean and markers are well-spaced to make reading the chronograph accurately at a glance easy on the eyes for drivers. The tachymeter scale wouldn’t come until later, but the earliest models incorporated the second and 1/5th second scale into the dial’s flange.

The 1887 is TAG Heuer’s basic in-house chronograph movement. The 1887 is the fourth in-house movement from TAG Heuer – Calibre 360, Calibre S, and Calibre V came earlier. When it was unveiled in 2009 to celebrate the brand’s 150th anniversary, there was a bit of commotion in watch circles about how in-house the 1887 actually is, and here’s the full scoop. TAG Heuer has put it to use in their most famous watch – TAG Heuer Carrera Calibre 1887 Chronograph 41mm, which seems to pay closest homage to the vintage Carreras we love so much while also sitting close to the entry-level price point in the Carrera range.

The entire case and all the silver markers on the dial are highly polished. This does leave the watch feeling a bit shinier than I’d like optimally, but hopefully with some wear this would go away a little bit. It does make reading the dial extremely easy in all different lighting conditions. The dial is extremely handsome, combining a flat finish with circular graining in the subdials, further accented by a polished silver flange. The hour markers are large applied metal, with readable seconds and 1/4th seconds hash marks between them. A tachymeter scale lines the main dial flange, which is matte black to match the rest of the dial.

The subdial layout has the chronograph 30-minutes at 12 o’clock, chronograph 12-hours at 6 o’clock, and a running seconds at 9 o’clock. “Cal. 1887” is indicated discretely in the running seconds dial, which is barely set into the main dial adding just enough textural difference. Tucked into the chronograph’s hours subdial is a small date window that is there when you need it but unobtrusive otherwise. The movement has an original display, featuring first off on the front vertical face the small seconds indicated by means of an aluminium cylinder fastened onto the suspended Tourbillon cage (significantly bigger than usual with a cage diameter of 14.50 mm, for even better appreciation of the mechanical parts).

The hour and minute are displayed to the right of the barrels, also indicated by means of one anodised black aluminium cylinder each. On their left is the cylinder indicating the power reserve. Reinforcing bars either side, made from anodised red aluminium, bring to mind Ferrari's red signature.

I like to be able to see the time at a glance. This is arguably one of the best features of the TAG Heuer Connected. Even when it is in stand-by mode, you can still easily read the time, which is handy if you’re running late and about to miss your train.

If you do need to wake the full-colour display up, a quick tap on the screen or a push on the crown brings it to life so that you can check the time down to the second. While it’s finished in a grey, the hour hand peeks out from underneath, once again bringing the copper color to the mix. While the minute hand would normally dwarf the hour hand, the skeletonized styling ensures that it’s kept fairly legible.

Under those hands, we’ve got two subdials spinning around. The one at 5 o’clock is your small seconds; the 9 o’clock dial is a 24-hour indicator (tied to the main time display). One interesting design bit with these are the smaller indicators that are screwed down on the dial so you can read each subdial. Sure, it throws off our normal conventions for reading dials like these (assuming the 12 o’clock position to be the zero point), but it again provides that little visual tweak – and one that’s much cleaner than had they tried to put hands on the dials.

This is no rubber and plastic hatchet job - the Huawei Watch is stylish and well-made. With a diameter of 42mm and a thickness of 11.3mm, it's a touch more compact than the new 42mm Moto 360. The bezels are also just 0.6mm thick, so you get more display real-estate too – 1.4 inches compared to 1.37 on the littler Moto.

The Huawei Watch walks the round LG display path, rather than limping along Moto 's 'flat-tyre' avenue – in reference to the black dead area at the bottom of the 360's screen. The AMOLED display is a 1.4-inch 400 x 400 one with a ppi count of 286. That's the highest on any Android Wear device to date – although the soon-to-launch LG Watch Urbane Second Edition will trump it with a 480 x 480 panel at 348ppi.

Huawei's effort is made all the more impressive thanks to a 10,000:1 contrast ratio. Colours are vibrant, text appears crisp and it even holds up pretty well under bright-lights.

Side by side with the smaller Moto 360 2 – its closest rival in terms of aesthetics – it's evidently a better display. Not just because it offers genuine 360-degree visuals, but because everything just looks sharper. There's no ambient light sensor, however – so you'd always have to have the display to a preset brightness setting that doesn't account for your situation.

The display is always-on and there are almost 50 pre-loaded watch faces, not counting the hundreds officially on offer from Google Play. The supplied faces range from a little boring to quite vibrant, and certainly support the overall build quality.

Obviously, this being an Android Wear watch, Google Fit is pre-loaded on the device and will do all the things it would do on another Google-powered smartwatch. However, Huawei has decided to have a crack at the fitness front itself, with the Watch pre-loaded with the Daily Tracking app.

Essentially, it does the same thing, but with slightly nicer graphics. Once you enter your personal metrics, it will keep score of your steps, calorie burn and the amount of times you stand up during a day. You can set all your own goals and Huawei also claims the Watch will know whether you are walking, running or climbing – we had mixed results on this front though.

So far, so pointless – but thanks to Huawei's partnership with Jawbone, the UP platform is compatible for Huawei's smartwatch. You can select the Huawei Watch as your device within Jawbone's app and tap into its rich graphs and personal coaching platform, which is great – especially if you don't own one of the latest UP bands. And it's the Huawei fitness stats that are imported, not the generic Android Wear ones.

There's no GPS on board though – so you can't treat the Huawei Watch as a dedicated running assistant, as you can with the Sony SmartWatch 3 and the new Moto 360 Sport. For the price-tag we'd have expected this connectivity to be included.

Design

The Tag Heuer Connected boasts a 46mm case and lugs made from grade 2 titanium. It’s all covered by a crystal sapphire, eschewing the toughened glass of rivals in favour of something more luxurious. The Tag Heuer Connected measures 12.8 mm deep on your wrist, which is a fair old chunk of titanium, making it fatter than most Android Wear watches to date. However, the chosen material pays off and it only weighs 52g. Interestingly, the Connected comes with a black rubber strap, which can be changed for the colour versions shown above. Hardware

Intel Atom Z34XX processor. For silicon fans, it’s the same one found inside the Intel Edison development board, which was the platform for a host of wearable devices including the recently revealed Blocks. The screen itself is slightly underwhelming, and we don’t think anyone will mistake the Tag Heuer Connected for a Carrera Cal16 mechanical watch. The 360 x 360 LCD only boasts a pixel density of 240ppi, which already lags way behind the competition. 4GB of storage on-board – standard for Android Wear devices – and the Tag Heuer Connected is IP67 rated. Jean Claude Biver promised all-day battery life and it’s powered by a 410mAh battery, which should offer a minimum 25 hours battery life.

Software

The Connected runs Android Wear, a platform that hasn’t been known for customisation so far but Tag has done its best to make it as high end as possible. Unsurprisingly Tag has taken care over the watch faces with three digital faces in black, deep blue or pearl white available at launch. All show the date window and include other details from Tag Heuer’s Carrera watches such as the hands, index, chronograph counters and minute track to make the Connected look as much like a mechanical watch as possible.

Upgrades

The Android Wear smartwatch will be upgradeable, to extend the lifespan of the product. Tag Heuer’s tagline refers to eternity and the company says it was simply not willing to create a product that couldn’t last forever. Users can opt top have their Tag Heuer Connected changed for a mechanical watch in the future, should they opt not to upgrade to future Tag smartwatches.
