The Houthi government of Yemen announced on Wednesday that it had shot down an American drone that had encroached into the state's territorial waters.

“With the help of God Almighty, our air defenses were able to shoot down an American MQ9 aircraft while it was carrying out hostile, monitoring and spying activities in the airspace of Yemeni territorial waters and within the framework of American military support for the Israeli entity,” the Yemeni military said in a statement.

There was no mention of the location of the incident, or the type of weapons used.

“Hostile movements will not deter the Yemeni armed forces from continuing to carry out military operations against the Israeli entity in support of the oppressed Palestinian people,” the military added.

The US military has not commented on the reported incident. A photo of a burning Reaper drone has been circulating on social media, but it has not been independently verified.

At the end of October, Yemen confirmed it had repeatedly launched drones and missiles against Israel, and said it intended to continue doing so.

Sanaa had decided on that course of action “out of a sense of religious, moral, humanitarian and national responsibility,” in order to “provide relief to our oppressed people in Gaza,” Yemeni military spokesman Yahya Saree said at the time.

The US military has previously said it had shot down multiple missiles and drones headed towards Israel over the Red Sea, but would not confirm if they had come from Yemen.

Israel declared war on Gaza after the October 7 incursion by Hamas, in which an estimated 1,400 Israelis were killed and another 200 or more taken captive. As of Wednesday, Gaza health officials have recorded over 10,000 Palestinians killed and more than 26,000 wounded, along with 2,550 missing, as a result of Israeli air and ground operations.

A Reaper drone crashed into the Black Sea in March, after it was intercepted by two Russian jets for flying too close to Crimea. The US claimed a Russian fighter had struck the drone’s propeller, but Moscow denied any contact had occurred. The Pentagon has been flying drones close to Russian airspace in support of the Ukrainian military, while claiming it is not involved in the conflict.

The US and Iran almost came to blows in June 2019, after Iranian air defenses brought down an American RQ-4A Global Hawk. Tehran said the UAV had strayed into Iranian airspace and ignored warnings to turn around, while Washington insisted the drone had been shot down in an “unprovoked attack” while patrolling over international waters.

Suspected Boko Haram militants have killed at least 40 people this week in Nigeria’s northeastern Yobe state, after opening fire on residents and setting off explosive devices, police in the West African country said on Wednesday.

The gunmen killed 20 people on Monday evening and another 20 on Tuesday at Gurokayeya village in the state’s Gaidam area in what appears to have been an act of vengeance, police spokesperson Abdulkarim Dungus said.

He stated that up to 17 villagers had died on the spot after being shot by the gunmen and that the others had been killed by a landmine explosion while returning from the funerals of the earlier attack victims.

“The other [group of] about 20 were among those who drove from Gaidam and neighboring villages to the affected village for the burial of the first 20 on Tuesday. When they were driving back home their vehicle drove over an explosive planted by the insurgents,” the spokesman said.

“Ten died on the spot and about ten died at the Gaidam Primary Health Care Centre, where they were rushed-to after the accident,” he added.

According to residents who spoke to Reuters, Yobe had been at peace for over a year until this week’s attacks. The last bomb blast in the state was reported in April last year.

The attack was carried out in response to villagers’ refusal to pay the jihadists’ tax on farm harvests and cattle, Nigeria’s The Punch newspaper reported, citing sources familiar with the matter.

The police spokesman also told the outlet that it was a revenge assault.

“You know, this is harvest time, and the insurgents are used to going around the farming communities, collecting Jizya [farm produce tax],” he explained, describing Yobe as a Boko Haram stronghold.

Yobe is the immediate neighbor of Borno State, known as the epicenter of jihadist violence in the northeast of Africa’s most populous nation.

More than 40,000 people have been killed and two million others displaced in Nigeria’s conflict between jihadists and the State, which has lasted for over a decade and has been led on the jihadist side by Boko Haram and other armed groups, UN figures have shown.

The Boko Haram movement, known for its abduction of hundreds of schoolgirls in Chibok in 2014, has carried out major attacks since 2009.

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, who'd promised at his inauguration in May to improve the country’s deteriorating security situation, had just approved a $2.8 billion supplementary budget to fund “urgent issues,” including defense and security.

Several thousand US troops have taken part in Israel’s ground operation in Gaza, the Iran-based Tasnim News Agency reported on Saturday. The Pentagon has recently announced plans to significantly reinforce its military presence in the Middle East amid the Israel-Hamas conflict and tensions with Iran.

According to the agency’s security sources, Israel’s assault on Gaza involved three divisions and several brigades and was also underpinned by 5,000 US military personnel. The outlet, however, did not provide any details about which troops took part in the offensive or what functions they performed.

Tasnim said that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attempted to enter the enclave from several areas in the north, west, and southwest “to split the Gaza Strip into two or three sections and cut off the connection among the Palestinian resistance forces before launching the next stage of the war.” The agency did not specify what results the Israeli military had achieved so far.

US President Joe Biden said it was a response to recurring attacks on US forces in Iraq and Syria. Tehran maintains that militant groups in those countries are acting independently.

Washington (AFP) – US President Joe Biden said on Monday that any discussions about a Gaza ceasefire could only take place if Hamas frees all hostages seized from Israel in its October 7 attack.

Israel hit back with a blistering bombing campaign which Gaza's Hamas-run health authority says has now killed more than 5,000 people.

Biden also touched on a call he had with Pope Francis on Sunday about the Israel-Hamas conflict and the humanitarian situation in Gaza.
