The people of Yelewata in Benue State have apologized to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi following the recent incident in which his convoy was blocked while he was on his way to visit the community.

The apology was made by the Council of Yelewata Elders during a press conference at the Yelewata Genocide Memorial Hall, where community leaders distanced themselves from the youths who reportedly stopped Obi's convoy.

The elders expressed regret over the harassment, embarrassment and inconvenience caused to Obi and members of his delegation, while appreciating his decision to visit Yelewata to sympathize with families affected by the June 2025 massacre.

According to the elders, Obi's planned visit was motivated by empathy and compassion, as he intended to offer condolences and provide personal relief support to residents who have continued to struggle following the tragedy.

One of the speakers at the press conference questioned why Obi's visit was disrupted, particularly as the former Anambra State governor was coming to console victims and support people who, according to the community, had been left without adequate assistance for months.

The elders also raised concerns about donations and other support reportedly received for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of Yelewata following the massacre.

They called on the government to provide a clear and transparent account of the reconstruction efforts, including donations and assistance reportedly received from individuals, local donors and international organizations.

The community said more than 270 people were killed during the June 13–14, 2025 attack, leaving families and residents to deal with the consequences more than a year later.

The elders further appealed to Peter Obi to accept their fresh invitation and return to Yelewata to identify with displaced residents and affected families.

They said the community is preparing to receive him and emphasized that his intended visit was welcomed by the people before the convoy was stopped.

The development comes after Obi's convoy was reportedly blocked by youths near Makurdi Airport as he attempted to travel to Yelewata for the condolence visit.

The latest statement by the elders appears to draw a clear distinction between the community and those responsible for the blockade, while also bringing renewed attention to questions surrounding assistance and donations meant for victims of the Yelewata massacre.

Education is not meant to produce mindless drones, but people who can reason things out well enough. If they don't like the government, at least they are reasoning things out, same as those who like the government.



NYSC exists because teachers, doctors, nurses, and similar cadre won't go to work in the rural areas.

One NYSC corper working in a rural school saw with her own eyes, teachers posted from the capital to her secondary school, spend a few weeks, while they work their reposting to a city school. ..then vamoose back to the city.

(Infact during my own NYSC, secondary schools in the area were crying for physics teachers. Literally crying).

If not for NYSC doctors and nurses now, whole rural areas will never have someone to take care of their medical needs.

EIther your state government starts forcing people to work in the rural areas, or NYSC will continue to be of use.

(For the record, I think that NYSC should be scrapped, but unfortunately the effects of the scrapping would be atrocious. Especially in education and healthcare.).

States cannot force people to work in rural areas. However, they can implement a scheme that lures people to work and remain in those remote areas.
