Nigeria’s political landscape can never lack the theatrics and excitement of a blockbuster Hollywood movie. Political gladiators will always explode at each other from time to time. At one point it was Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State with Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, both from the PDP, battling over the issue of herdsmen. Now it is Governor Hope Uzodinma and Senator Rochas Okorocha, both from APC, in Imo state. The immediate past governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, was arrested by the police after he led a team of his supporters to reopen the Royal Palm Estate sealed by the State Government. https://thejournalnigeria.com/okorocha-uzodinma-guymen-politics-imo-state/ |
Every fame, according to an African proverb, has a foundation. Same way, successful businessmen and women have the genesis of their success. People, however, do not always remember the humble beginnings of successful people. They will prefer to rather focus on the current exciting state of abundance. No entrepreneur can climb the mountain top without crushing some weeds at the foot of the ladder. Mike Adenuga- The Taxi Driver Michael Adeniyi Ishola Adenuga is a man whose net worth, according to Forbes rating, grew from $4.5billion in 2018 to $6.2billion in the year 2020. This is a man with two degrees in business administration from Northwestern Oklahoma State University, and Pace University, New York. Mike Adenuga, as he is popularly called had a humble beginning, but stands today as one of the richest men in Nigeria. https://thejournalnigeria.com/successful-entrepreneurs-nigeria-first-job/ |
President Joe Biden’s message to African leaders, meeting virtually at the African Union 2021 Summit about two weeks ago, was a very exciting and soothing one. Speaking in a video address, his first speech to an international forum as U.S. president, he said, “The United States stands ready now to be your partner in solidarity, support and mutual respect.” Continuing his remarks, Biden outlined what he called a shared vision of a better future with growing trade and investment that advances peace and security: “A future committed to investing in our democratic institutions and promoting the human rights of all people, women and girls, LGBTQ individuals, people with disabilities, and people of every ethnic background, religion and heritage.” Biden added that he hopes to attend the next African Union (AU) summit in person. Even as Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat welcomed the message and said the African Union looks forward to “resetting the strategic AU-USA partnership,” he probably did not realize that there could be some uncomfortable interest embedded in this exciting offer. https://thejournalnigeria.com/biden-partnership-offer-africa-handshake-beyond-elbow/ |
Nigeria is indeed a home of possibilities. Nigerians, particularly Lagosians, were stupefied when a picture cover of a book titled “My Service to Humanity” surfaced online. What was shocking was the fact that it had the name of Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as “MC Oluomo”. Anyone who is familiar with the name knows that it racks up the imagery of brute force and political hooliganism. He is regarded as the king of the streets: one who lords over thugs and an instrument of destruction for politicians. When he was made the chairman of National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), many were miffed by the move. How can a person with a highly debatable profile, with very limited education lead a such a vibrant union in the state? His invitation to give a keynote address at a symposium organised by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) on the transport sector further generated a lot of fuss online. https://thejournalnigeria.com/mc-oluomo-my-service-humanity/ |
Besides a few upsides, the negative effect of social media on the political turf of countries around the world is far reaching. There is no denying the fact that the role of social media in politics, especially in recent times, is that of a meddlesome interloper. Its role in fomenting partisanship and polarization has helped fuel political crises in different environments. The result has thrown many countries of the world into states of political upheaval, leading them on a cataclysmic path of near anarchy. Worthy of mention is the fact that trust is the building block of every democratic institution. Every government is built on trust. Once the people have trust in a government, no amount of pressure can alter it. History has equally shown that once a government loses face with the people it results in serious complications for the overarching polity. Now when the allegiance and trust for the government is taken over by certain characters on social media, especially when these influencers are opposed to the government, the result is what we see when they use it to counter the government and the people will blindly obey or accept it. https://thejournalnigeria.com/social-media-new-government/ |

Agitations for Igbo presidency has been on for quite a while. Talks of an Igbo presidency have received the backing of a few stakeholders and groups in the political space. Some Igbo and pro-Igbo political influencers believe that it is time for the South-east to bear the presidential mantle which has somewhat eluded them since the Nigerian civil war, over 50 years ago. They equally believe that agitations for secession will be quelled should an Igbo candidate emerge as president in 2023. With about 15 months to party primaries for the presidential elections, Nigerians are asking, where are the serious Igbo contenders? https://thejournalnigeria.com/igbo-presidency/ |
There is presently a paradigm shift from the honest way of making a living and growing a business gradually to seeking speedy means of amassing wealth. Money rituals have become the preferred approach to achieving financial success and seeking solutions to personal problems. Dubious “men of God” now use various social media platforms, to magnify their calling and ability to provide easy wealth and give solutions to people’s problems through spiritual means. The latest fad is an Anambra- based self-acclaimed Prophet, Onyeze Jesus, who has gained widespread popularity in the social media. He is the overseer of a church called the Children of Light Anointing Ministry located in Idimeli Local Government Area of Anambra State. The prophet caused massive commotion online when he recently uploaded a video of his members, or probably clients, bathing naked in a river while he performed rituals with N50 notes being thrown into the river. https://thejournalnigeria.com/yahoo-pastors-commoditization-faith/ |
The Nigerian media and the biased representations that have been spread over the years, have normalized the criminalization of the Fulani ethnic identity through the propagation of the unsavory “Fulani herdsmen” connection. The Fulani herdsmen have been blamed for all the evil engulfing all the states in the Southwest region. Far worse than it is, a good number of people have raised the blame game to a crescendo, insisting that the Fulani people are responsible for the overall problem in Nigeria. Many hold this view just to spite the man at the centre, who, for the love of country and nationhood has done nothing but serve the people. https://thejournalnigeria.com/politics-security-criminalization-fulani-ehnicity/ |
The glorification of thugs, particularly in Southern Nigerian politics, is indicative of the atrophy and collapse of values and leadership. In a society where thugs are exhorted and elevated to positions of leadership, it leaves one to ponder the dismal nature of the whole state of affairs. From MC Oluomo to Gani Adams, the list is endless. Sunday Igboho’s larger than life image, which has equally earned him tractions on social media following his role in the Fulani herders’ crisis in Oyo, is the latest attestation to the glorification of thuggery in Southern Nigerian Politics. Sunday Igboho, whose real name is Sunday Adeyemo, rose to prominence after he issued a seven-day ultimatum to Fulani herders in Igangan, Ibarapa North LGA of Oyo State. Statements by Sunday Igboho incited some of his supporters to destroy many house and cars, including those of Saliu Kadri, the Seriki Fulani of Igangan. The Seriki Fulani was lucky to escape with his life from the hands of arsonists, causing mayhem under the guise of fighting for the emancipation of Yoruba land. https://thejournalnigeria.com/sunday-igboho-thugs-nigerian-politics/ |
Virtually every country in the world has experienced one form of lockdown or the other. This is following strict guidelines that was imposed to help contain the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic that ravaged the world in 2020. Over and above the health implication of the virus, the pandemic had triggered a global economic crisis. It was in the midst of this crisis that Nigeria slipped into recession last year. Many economists have stated that the hope of recoveries in economies would take about 2 years. Interestingly, The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry ( LCCI ) in their recent briefing on the economy revealed that they saw a brighter light in the tunnel for Nigeria. They expressed strong hope that Nigeria’s economic recovery could come as early as the second quarter of 2021. Mrs. Toki Mabogunje, President of LCCI revealed that the prediction was given due to the absence of major economic shocks. The LCCI industry has hinged the possibility of the country’s recovery on four notable pillars which are the local and global effective management of the pandemic, widespread vaccine rollout, the direction of the global oil market, and the quality of fiscal, monetary, trade, and regulation policies. https://thejournalnigeria.com/recession-lcci-recovery/

ecurity is about the most essential of all social expectations, and it is germane to the consolidation of democratic governance. Recent and persistent demands for the removal of service chiefs, probe into the expenditure of the Nigerian military, and the demand for President Muhammadu Buhari to address the National Assembly could only hastily be perceived as efforts to tackle insecurity in the country. https://thejournalnigeria.com/passing-the-buck-nigerian-legislators-and-insurgency/

Recently, a CNN report introduced into the public domain its own conclusion on the EndSARS Lekki Toll Gate incident in Lagos State. The tragedy of the story is the ‘investigative journalism’ toga ascribed to it. There is no doubt that the CNN compiled hours of footages aggregated haphazardly online, and deliberately evaded other counter images to come to a conclusion that the Nigerian Government and her security agencies were complicit in the Lekki shootings. Before extrapolating, the CNN immediately indicted the Nigerian Government with its introductory statement, tone and expression. https://thenationonlineng.net/cnns-biased-narrative-unmasking-the-conspiracy/ |
