fordunit: Over time, I have gotten several questions regarding the issue of starting a poultry farming business. So in this article, I will be sharing with you strategic information on how to start a poultry farming business from scratch and grow it successfully. Poultry farming is a viable business anytime any day; and to be sincere with you, it's a business I have been eying for some time now. Below are reasons why I consider poultry farming a profitable business?

3 Factors that makes Poultry Farming a Profitable Business
There are a lot of factors that make poultry business a profitable one but I will be highlighting only three major factors:

a. Food is one of the basic needs of man. Regardless of the economic situation, human beings must feed and since domestic birds are consumable; that makes poultry farming feasible.

b. My country Nigeria for instance has a population of over 150million and growing; bear it in mind that a huge population means a huge demand for food (egg and meat).

c. With the increased awareness on the health implications of red meat; there's an increased demand for white meat and birds are a source of white meat.

But before I go into the details of starting a poultry farming business, I want to emphatically state that the information provided in this article does not in any way replace the need for you to conduct a feasibility study, write a business plan and do your own due diligence. Secondly, the information shared in this article is applicable to any locality; be it USA, Canada, UK, Nigeria, Ghana, etc. Without wasting your time, below is a step by step guide on how to start your own poultry business.

How to start your own Poultry Farming Business
1. Select your Poultry Niche
The poultry industry is a broad niche. There are many sub-sectors in the poultry industry which you can tap into. Below are niches in the poultry business:
a. Egg production (Layers breeding)
b. Meat production (Broilers breeding)
c. Chicken breeding (Hatchery)
d. Poultry feed production
e. Poultry equipment manufacturing
f. Egg and meat processing, packaging and marketing

2. What type of bird will you be focusing on?
Poultry can further be classified into the types of birds:
a. Domestic fowl (Broilers and layers)
b. Turkey
c. Guinea fowl
d. Pigeon
e. Duck
f. Goose
But for this article, I will be focusing on poultry breeding for egg and meat purposes with respect to the domestic fowl.

3. Start-up Capital Investment
The poultry business is capital intensive; depending on the scale, location of your farm and the type of management technology used. A small scale poultry farm being run behind your house may require a capital of between $500 - $1,500. A medium scale poultry farm may require $2,000 - $5,000 and a large scale poultry farm may require a start-up capital of $10,000 and above. Like I stated earlier, scale is directly proportional to capital.

4. Poultry Location
A good location is vital to the success and profitability of your poultry farm. An ideal poultry farm should be sited where there's a large availability of cheap land and at the same time; should be close to areas with high population density. It's not advisable to site your poultry farm within a residential area because of the offensive odour it produces.

5. Housing your birds
There are three methods you can employ with respect to housing your birds. They are:

a. Extensive system: Range and fold unit
b. Semi Intensive system: Standard semi intensive unit and straw yard
c. Intensive system: i. Deep litter, ii. Wire and slated floor, iii. Straw yard, iv. Battery cage.

If you are running a poultry farm for commercial purposes and you intend getting the best out of the business; with respect to high birds' productivity and efficiency. Then you should consider housing your birds using the intensive system. Note that each of the three housing system has its own advantages and disadvantages. Lastly, your poultry housing structure should be built at a particular angle; taking sunlight and wind into consideration.

6. Poultry equipment and appliances
The following equipment may be needed for your poultry farm:
a. Feeders
b. Drinkers
c. Perches
d. Nests
e. Crates
f. Lighting system
g. Waste disposal system
h. Incubator

7. Farm staffing and manpower
Operating a farm is not labor intensive if the use of technology is employed. With respect to staffing, the number of manpower needed is also dependent on the size of your farm. But some must haves should be admin officer or manager; who will oversee the day to day running of your business. Your manager can also double as your accountant to cut down cost. It is advisable you have personnel who will reside permanently in the farm to monitor and see to the well being of your birds. You will also need security personnel that will monitor the inflow and outflow of people around your farm; and most importantly, guard against theft. Aside these few mentioned, you can add more personnel to suit your business needs.

8. Projected return on investment
The incubation period of the domestic fowl is 21 days. You can start selling off your birds as early as 8 - 12 weeks but full maturity is reached between 20 - 24 weeks.

In Nigeria, the demand for poultry products far outweigh the supply, hence it is a money spinning venture for every willing entrepreneur. The uniqueness of poultry industry is that it has room for persons with large source of fund(millionaires) as well as starters with little capital. With as low as N5,000 one can venture profitably into this industry and yet with as much as a billion Naira, one will just be brushing the surface in Nigerian poultry industry.
Poultry farming is suitable for professionals such as veterinarians, animal husband men, trained farmers, poultry specialist as well as school leavers, non experts and persons with a willing heart to learn and no matter the angle or level one is entering the industry from, training, peer reference and consultancy is a conditio sine qua non for success in the industry. Many had entered poultry farming and came out burnt, some others are in it reaping fortune; the dividing factor is 'information'. Entering poultry industry blindly is suicidal! For the sake of the Nigerian market, I will in these series deal first with the two major aspect of the industry and highlight the potentials.
EGG PRODUCTION.
Going into poultry production for the purpose of egg production means you intend to raise laying hen. They could be from Day-old-chicks(DOC), or stock as Point-of-Lay(POL) birds. Layers can be reared on Deep liter system or Battery Cage system. Caged birds need more capital but the merits include; easy of management, cleaner eggs, safety from breakages, minimal feed wasteage, reduced water contermination and maximized space. A unit of cage from my company with the capacity of 120 birds cost N90,000. Most cages come with automatic drinkers; some even come with full automation meaning, feeding, manure management as well as egg collection systems; are all automatic thus greatly reducing human contacts, disease spread and labour cost. Cage system is therefore the appropriate system for large scale farmers.
Beginners with limited resources could start with deep litter system. It is affordable, litter material are readily available. The major requirements are conducive housing and more intense management of the water, feed and litters. The roof in all cases should be heat repealing, made from asbestos, thatch etc. Vent, created to let out heat, wall should be less than two feet high, 'curtain' from sacks or tarpaulin provided to prevent entrance of rain water to prevent incidences of coccidiosis and other enteric diseases.
Beginners should minimise the cost of poultry house construction and utilise local materials as equipments so that the limited resources could be channel into productive running cost such as DOC or POL and feed. To give you an idea of cost as of today, a million naira, if meticulously utilized can construct a poultry house that could hold five thousand birds. From our company too, persons that want to enter the venture with cages with all the added advantages, could purchase same with about N4.2million for 5,000 birds. We also supply DOCs and POLs. DOC cost between N120 to N210/chicks depending on time of the year and hatchery. Beginners could start with POL, these are birds in their fourteen to twenty weeks of Age,(birds often start dropping their first egg from 22weeks to 24weeks of age). Advantage of acquiring Point Of Lay birds is the reduced risk. Prices of POL at press time ranges from N750 to N950/bird.
In budgeting for feeding, a bag cost about N2,200 today and could feed 100birds for 3 days.
Let me open your understanding to how profitable egg production could be under proper management, a bird at good lay point generate between N6 to N10/day as gross profit. This means that a flock of 100 laying birds could generate N800 profit per day, and about N24,000/months hence by implication 1000birds could generate N240,000/month and 10,000 bird farm, a N2.4million profit per month. At the end of the 54 to 72weeks of lay, the spent layers would be sold for nearly the equivalent amount with which the POL is purchased. You can see that egg production is terrifically profiting. The demand for eggs is seemingly insatiable.
MEAT PRODUCTION.
I will briefly explain what meat production entails in poultry farming. The meat is call broilers, fryers, poultry or simply chicken. To succeed on this side of the industry, the farmer must target eateries, hotels, and cold rooms or start ones own outlet. Breeding broilers for live sales is only sustainable under small scale and seasonal. For a farmer to be successful in broilers, he should rear between 1000 to 10,000 birds and above per batch. Harvest should be at least weekly. A large poultry house is needed. Provision of constant electricity is necessary for lighting and cold room.
Broiler production entails purchasing DOCs (broiler), brooding, and raising them for six to seven weeks. Feeding is ad libitum(i.e continuously). Well managed flock will weigh between 1.8 to 2.4kg within this period and upon dressing, weigh between 1.4 to 1.8kg/bird which is the standard weight for most eateries. Some companies that buy live birds pays between N410 to N600/kg live weight. Eateries and some cold rooms pay N600 to N820/bird dressed weight. Profit expectation from raising broiler is between N150 to N250/bird.
Factors to consider before venturing into broiler production also include but not limited to the following: good source of DOC, conducive housing, good feed, technical know how, heat for brooding, cold room facility, defeathering machine, and a ready market.
The demand for broilers is ever high and with the ban on importation on poultry product, the sky is the starting point for any bold entrepreneur.
Which ever aspect you wish to participate in, always seek and pay for consultancy, employ experts or get trained and start gradually.

Farmafric: Cost of setting up 5000 capacity Poultry In Nigeria
1. Building:
A single building that can contain three rows of cages would be suitable. The width should be a minimum of 12meters and length of should be 35meters. Utilize the cage detail below in construction bearing in mind that each row will have a gutter.
(CAGE DETAILS:
Cage: Poultry Chicken layers cage in CKD form
Size:
the length: 2.2m
the width: 2.4m
the height: 1.65m).
The estimated cost should be 1.8million naira. The wall should not be more than 0.3meters and the roof should be of asbestos with a vent in between.
Required cages:
Utilizing the Premium cage quality; capacity is 120 birds/unit. The 5000 poultry would need 42 units. Total cost is N3,780,000. Cost of installation is N84,000.
Birds:
Budget N850/point of lay bird or N180/day old chick. Budget additional N200/POL to raised them to laying or additional N750/DOC to raise them to laying. In general budget N5 million to raise 5000 birds to lay.
Good birds would start dropping at least by 20 weeks. Feeding at this point would be about 0.1kg/bird each day. By the time they peak, profit expectation should be about N7/bird each day.

let us first understand one thing. physically, man is not equal to women , or man is not equal to another animal. what women do to each other is non-penetrative. what man does to man is penetrative. can result in disease.
what man does to animal/or animal does to woman is penetrative. can result in disease/newer diseases.

I am against man-man s.ex , especially if the person is not genetically ho.mosexual or suffers other such handicaps. it is morally wrong and if he does so, he is doing crime. if both consent to it. then let them do what they want.

In the case of animal-man/animal-woman, i am 100% against it, because animals are innocent and do not realise what is happening to them. it is therefore without their consent. let us not abuse the sacred innocence of animals.

I say that is wrong too. the poultry that comes from those small cages, processed, etc., it is all wrong.

the only proper, Gods ordained natural way of killing animals is by hunting, or by free-roaming herded livestock, as in he case of those kept by nomadic tribes, and in the case of the free-roaming chicken and poultry you see in your village.

therefore today, the only right way we consume a living thing is the fish. the fish is the last survivng mode of hunted and consumed animal today.

Hunting as our forefathers did before and during colonial days is best, becaue it gives the animal the chance to escape and save its life and is the natural way animals consume other animals. by hunting , I mean subsistence hunting. hunting only for immediate needs and not mass slaughter. this subsistence hunting was a way proposed recently for the nomads of SOuth Sudan during a conservation referendum. It is the natural and right way.

Meat from nomadic herds is ok , because these are free roaming herds from millenia, and this is the Gods-ordained and natural human/tribal way of livelihood. The cattle of nomads cannot exist by themselves if left alone. It is a symbiotic relationship between humans and certain animals and is therefore right. neither can exist without the other. Both live free lives. Settled people are supposed to buy from these nomads and not those factories that cage them. This was how it was done in the past, and even now , many of us Hausa by cattle/goat directly from Fulani Herders. Our government must do something to bring back this system and encourage these tribes and their livelihood and importance. For example, in parts of Central/West India, the cattle-owning tribes have formed a co-operative called the Amul Co-operative, where the company gets its milk directly from cows owned by cattle-herding tribes of places such as Gujarat.
also cattle herding tribes rarely consume meat because they cant afford to lose their precious cattle.
