Internship Programme - Information and Computer Technology (ICT)
Internship Description;

The purpose of the Internship programme is to provide students and recent graduates from diverse academic backgrounds exposure to development issues and a first-hand experience with the day-to-day working environment of UNFPA. The UNFPA Internship Programme offers a small group of outstanding students the opportunity to acquire direct exposure to UNFPA operations. It is designed to complement development-oriented studies with practical experience in various aspects of UNFPA work.

Applicants should have expressed interest in the field of development; ability to adapt to new environments and work with individuals from different cultural backgrounds. Interns work under the supervision of a staff member at UNFPA. The background of the interns is matched with the needs of the organization.

Creation of Folder on the Local server:
Hierarchical Folder structure  as presented by units to be created on the server
Inventory of Documents:
Take inventory of all documents to be scanned.
Daily Sign out of folders
Ensure documents are re filed properly
Scanning:
Scan all documents with proper title and Meta data.
Save scanned files to appropriate folders on the file structure
Upload to iDocs filing structure
Documentation:
Prepare Inventory list of all documents scanned and uploaded
Document lesson learned
Recommendations.
Desk support:
Support with troubleshoot of LAN, and Computer issues
Any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications and Requirements:

Applicants to the UNFPA internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

Be enrolled in a postgraduate degree programme  within Information and  Computer Technology  –  ICT (such as a master’s programme, or higher);
Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (such as bachelor’s degree or equivalent);
Have recently graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must start the internship within one-year of graduation;
Be enrolled in a postgraduate professional traineeship program and undertake the internship as part of this programme.

The Intern should have the following skills:

Certification in Microsoft, A+ hardware, Web design, Oracle PL/SQL, Programming in HTML and CSS will be an added advantage
Server management skills
 Ability to operate a computer system
Ability to operate office equipment’s especially a digital scanner.

Financial Aspects of Internship

The costs associated with an intern’s participation in the programme must be assumed either by the students themselves or by the nominating institution, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students. Students will have to meet living expenses as well as make their own arrangements for accommodation, travel and other requirements. In addition, applicants must have medical insurance for the duration of the internship. Proof of insurance will need to be submitted before the internship begins.
Interns are not financially remunerated by UNFPA for their work but may receive a stipend to help cover basic daily expenses related to the internship, such as meals and transportation at the duty station, when not financially supported by any institution or programme, such as a university, government, foundation, or scholarship programme. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and other living expenses must be borne by either the intern or the intern’s sponsoring institution.

Scholarship Benefits

The scholarships provides:

Eligibility Criteria

Age Requirements

To apply for a full New Zealand Scholarship, you must be 18 years old or older when you start your scholarship. This means if you are 17 years of age when you apply, you must have your 18th birthday before you start your scholarship in semester one. Exception for Samoa: Scholars from Samoa can be 17 years of age when they commence their scholarship.

Academic Requirements

As part of the New Zealand Scholarships application process, you need to choose your preferred education institution and preferred courses. Scholarship applicants don’t need to apply for admission to their preferred education institution and courses but they need to check that they are likely to meet the minimum academic requirements and the minimum level of English required for their courses.

Course entry requirements are set by your chosen education institution so you must check minimum entry requirements on their website before you apply for a New Zealand Scholarship.

English Requirements

Each university or education institution sets the minimum level of English you need for your preferred courses, so check their website.

Generally, to study for a postgraduate qualification, you must have at least:

•  an overall IELTS score of 6.5 and no band less than 6.0
• a TOEFL score of 90 on the internet-based test with a writing score of 21

Contribution to their Country’s Development

Scholars are expected to contribute to their country’s social or economic development for two years after completing their scholarship study. The purpose of a New Zealand Scholarship is to fund the training of citizens from developing countries, so they can positively impact on their country’s development by sharing new skills and knowledge gained from their study. That is why scholars are expected to return home after their scholarship for at least two years to contribute to the social and economic development of their own country.

When assessing scholarship applications, applicants who want to study courses that align strongly with their current work experience and applicants who will continue working in their current job sector after they finish their scholarship are preferred.

The position will be based in Programme Unit, in WFP Nigeria Office. The internship will be typically for the period of at least 3 months during May/June to August/ September 2020.

Brief description of WFP resilience activities, in the Programme Unit, Abuja, Nigeria

Nigeria is a federal constitutional republic. It is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world. Nigeria has over 500 ethnic groups. The crisis induced by non-state armed groups remains the principal driving factor of instability in northeast Nigeria. Since 2010, they have increasingly expanded their operational capabilities. In May 2013 a state of emergency was declared by the Government in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States.

There are 2 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) reported to be in Nigeria (IOM/DTM Round 27), of which the majority are in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States. The June 2019 Cadre Harmonisé (CH) reports nearly 3 million people in need of food assistance in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States. WFP operations are focused on crisis response to prevent deterioration of food and nutrition security, reduce malnutrition and minimize gender inequalities. WFP activities are concentrated in rural areas of north-eastern Nigeria that are more vulnerable and food insecure.



General Information

Duties and responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of the Head of Programme, the PD Summer Intern will perform the following duties:

Analyse and synthesize data for Programme activity reporting
Assist in standardizing the Programme unit’s internal periodic reporting package
Assist in designing standard background narrative for each planned activity under the Nigeria Country Strategy Plan that informs donor proposals and/or activity reporting

Living conditions in Abuja, Nigeria

With over 182 million people, Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa and the seventh largest in the world. The annual growth rate of the population is approximately 2.7 per cent, and more than half the population are under 30 years of age. The road network in Abuja (FCT) is very good and almost all roads are motorable during the entire year. The Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport is accessible to and from all other airports in the country.

Criminality is a major factor that negatively affects the security situation in the Abuja (FCT). There are no identifiable criminal gangs in Abuja, though criminality has become a norm in the city and its environs partly due to social-economic factors and the lack of the capacity of the Security Forces to deal with the situation. Protests in Abuja by labour unions, religious-affiliated groups such as the Islamic Movement in Nigeria and other identifiable civil society groups are likely. Although major terrorist activities/attacks have not been recorded in Abuja (FCT) since 2015, Terrorism is still a lingering factor of insecurity.

The PD intern will be paid a monthly stipend of approximately USD 360 per month as a contribution towards basic subsistence costs.

EducationJAMB – Why We Suspended NIN For UTME Registration by Danurugwo(op): 8:04am On Jan 12, 2020
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board has explained that technical reasons and stakeholders’ concerns compelled the suspension of the use of the National Identification Number as a requirement for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination and Direct Entry registrations.

The UTME and DE registrations were scheduled to begin on Monday, January 13 and end on February 17, 2019.

Announcing this at a press conference in Abuja on Saturday, JAMB Registrar, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, noted that technical issues with regards to the system of registration at the National Identification Management Commission was one of the major reasons for the suspension.




He cited difficulties being faced by candidates in the NIN registration, adding that the NIN requirement as a precondition for the UTME and DE registrations had been set aside for this year’s registrations.

Oloyede said the NIN would, however, be a necessary requirement in the 2021 UTME and Direct Entry registrations.

He said plans are underway for the provision of a more advanced system that would be more efficient for the exercise.

The registrar stated, “We came to a decision yesterday (Friday) and decided that we will suspend the use of NIN as a prerequisite for the 2020 UTME and Direct Entry registrations until 2021.

“By then, all candidates would have been given one year notice to register. This does not affect our permanent and ad hoc staff who will participate in the exercise as they will require the NIN for verification.”

Oloyede disclosed that the board and the NIMC would continue to share intelligence reports as well as other plans for the smooth conduct of the exercise in the future.

He stated that the NIN as a requisite for the exercise was to tackle identity fraud during the examinations.

He added, “We have gone round and seen the passion and commitment of the candidates; the reality on the ground is that what we expect is not attainable at the moment, so we shall not inflict more pain on candidates.”

Also speaking, the Director-General of NIMC, Mr Aliyu Azeez, said that the move was necessary as the commission was overwhelmed with the exercise within the short time given.

He said that NIMC had only 1,000 centres around the country for the exercise and would need up to 4,000 centres.

He, however, stated that the partnership with JAMB would continue while advising parents and candidates for the 2021 exercise to use the opportunity to acquire the number within the stipulated time to avoid last-minute rushes.

Azeez also said that by 2021, NIMC registration would be available at JAMB Computer-Based Tests centres nationwide with operators on the ground to capture candidates.

Our correspondent had reported the difficulties faced by candidates in NIN registration including alleged extortion of candidates by NIMC officials.

The JAMB spokesman, Dr Benjamin Fabian, had alleged that examination malpractices syndicates were behind the hitches at the NIN registration centres.
