Foreign Affairs / Leaders Of Mali, Chad, Niger And Burkina In France For Anti-terrorism Summit by Datelineng(m): 6:46pm On Jan 13, 2020
The leaders of five countries in Africa’s Sahel region were expected in France on Monday for a summit called by President Emmanuel Macron on the fight against militants.

France has some 4,500 troops based in Mali, Niger and Chad to back up local forces against fighters and Macron wants political commitments from the region’s leaders.

The presidents of Burkina Faso, Chad, Mali, Mauritania and Niger will meet Macron in Pau, where seven out of 13 French soldiers, killed in Mali in November, were based.

Macron initially called the summit for December, shortly after the troops died in a helicopter collision while taking on jihadists.

He said he wanted the Sahel leaders to clearly state what they wanted from Paris, oppose local “anti-French” sentiment and do “the necessary political work on their side’’ to build on France’s military actions.

France’s military involvement is sensitive in the Sahel countries, which are all former French colonies and Macron’s initiative was poorly received.

The Burkinabe President, Roch Kabore, said he had learned about the invitation from the press and found Macron’s “tone and conditions to be problematic’’.

However, the summit was later postponed after a militant attack in Niger killed 71 soldiers.

French troops have been in the Sahel region since they intervened in 2013 to recapture Northern Mali from jihadists.

France and the EU have supported a joint force between the five Sahel countries in an attempt to build up local military capacities.

But so far, it had recorded little success.

Foreign Affairs / In Niger Republic, President Sacks Army Chief After 160 Soldiers Killed by Datelineng(m): 6:32pm On Jan 13, 2020
Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou has replaced the head of the army after two of the country’s deadliest attacks in living memory killed at least 160 soldiers and prompted a rethink in the battle against jihadist groups, the government said.

Ahmed Mohamed led the army for over two years, a period marked by a steep rise in attacks by militants linked to Islamic State and al Qaeda that culminated in a daytime raid on a remote army base on Thursday that killed at least 89 soldiers.

That attack came less than a month after another on an outpost that killed 71 soldiers and raised questions about Niger’s ability to contain the spread of jihadist groups across its western border from Mali and Burkina Faso.

Major General Salifou Modi was appointed Mohamed’s successor on Monday, the government announced after a cabinet meeting.

Niger said it would launch a new military offensive against militants, but past campaigns have failed to curb violence despite the presence of French and American troops.

Attacks in Niger have risen fourfold over the past year, killing more than 400 people, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, a non-profit research organization.

Military campaigns by armies in the Sahel, a semi-arid swathe of land beneath the Sahara, have also been marred by human rights abuses, which analysts say have pushed some civilians into the arms of the jihadists.

In addition to the Islamist attacks, countries in the region, especially Mali and Burkina Faso, have struggled to cope with deadly ethnic clashes between rival farming and herding communities.

Politics / Ganduje Vs Yusuf: Supreme Court Decides On Monday by Datelineng(m): 9:23am On Jan 12, 2020
The Supreme Court will on Monday decide on the case filed candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Abba Kabir Yusuf challenging the victory of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 governorship election in Kano State.

This is based on the Supreme Court registry on Friday notifying the parties that judgment in the case will be delivered on Monday.

Yusuf had polled 1,014,353 votes against Ganduje’s 987,829 in the polls but the election was declared inconclusive by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) saying the margin between the two is less than the number of cancelled votes in the election.

After a supplementary election, INEC declared Ganduje winner of the election with 1,033,695 votes, while Yusuf had 1,024,713 votes.

The PDP candidate has asked the tribunal to declare him winner arguing that he had won the election at first ballot, but the tribunal decided otherwise. The Court of Appeal had also upheld the election of Ganduje as governor of Kano State, after dismissing Yusuf’s petition as lacking merit.

He said during the operations, 10 kidnap victims were rescued, while 500 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition 23 Motorbikes, 15 AK 47 rifles, four General Purpose Machine Guns (GPMG), one PKM Machine Gun, one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) bomb, one Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) tube, 11 fully loaded magazines, 600 rustled cows and 300 rustled sheep were recovered.

Education / JAMB Suspends National Identification Number (NIN) As Requirement For UTME 2020 by Datelineng(m): 12:36pm On Jan 11, 2020
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has suspended the use of the National Identification Number for registration for the 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination UTME.

The registrar of JAMB, Ishaq Oloyede, who stated this while briefing journalists in Abuja on Saturday, said the move was to provide more time for candidates to get their national identification numbers.

He said the suspension was also to address the technical challenges experienced at some centres.

He asked candidates to disregard the use of NIN for the 2020 registration and strictly comply with other procedures for the registration. He however said that JAMB will consider the use of NIMC for 2021 exams.

The board last year said from 2020, candidates will register for its examinations with their national ID numbera to solve the challenges of multiple registration.

Foreign Affairs / Islamic State Terrorists Happy With America's Assassination Of Iran's Soleimani by Datelineng(m): 12:29pm On Jan 11, 2020
The Islamic State (IS) group has welcomed the death of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani, the head of the elite Quds Force.

In a statement, it described the general’s demise as an act of divine intervention that benefitted jihadists. However, it made no mention at all of the US, which carried out the deadly drone strike against Soleimani in Baghdad on 3 January.

President Donald Trump’s decision to assassinate Gen Soleimani set off a chain of consequences – one of the first was on the unfinished war against jihadists.

Almost immediately the US-led coalition fighting IS suspended operations in Iraq. The US and its allies announced that their main job was now defending themselves.

From a military point of view, they probably had no choice.

Iran and the militias it sponsors here in Iraq have sworn vengeance for the killings caused by the missile fired by a US drone at Soleimani’s vehicle as it left Baghdad airport on Friday.

That puts US forces in Iraq, and those from Western allies working alongside them, squarely in the firing line.

It is also very good for IS, and will speed up its recovery from the blows it took when its “caliphate” was smashed.

It is also good news for the extremists that the Iraqi parliament passed a motion demanding an immediate American withdrawal from the entire country.

A notorious gun runner, Samson Sallau, has described how he buys and sells AK-47 guns and pistols to armed robbers and bandits who have been terrorizing some states in the North.

In a video clip obtained by PRNigeria, Sallau made the confession in Hausa while being interrogated by DSP Hassan Gimba Sule, the Minna Sector Commander, of the Inspector General of Police (IGP’s) Special Tactical Squad.

The Plateau State-born criminal said he has engaged in the illicit business of trading dangerous ammunition to robbers for over three years now.

He said he normally gets the supply of the lethal guns from a man called Zed in Jos.

“After buying the AK-47, rounds of magazine, and pistols, I export and sell them to bandits and robbers in Niger, Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina and Nasarawa States. I do buy a pistol for N90,000 and sell it for N120,000.

“In the last three years, I have purchased and sold about 100 AK-47 guns and 30 pistols. I bought and also sold about 2,000 to 10,000 rounds of magazines, and 2000 bullets.

“I normally buy a round of magazine for AK-47 for N300 and sell it N450. While I get a pack of bullets for pistols at N300. I then sell it for N400,” he disclosed.

Salau, who was arrested in Minna, the Niger State capital, with two pistols and 46 bullets, promised to cooperate with the police in tracking and arresting the dealers who regularly patronize him.
