Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the upcoming 2023 election, has revealed that he may extend his support to Peter Obi, his Labour Party counterpart from the previous election, in the 2027 election. Currently engaged in merger talks with opposition political parties, Atiku expressed his willingness to back Obi if he is chosen by the party as their candidate. This announcement comes after a meeting between Atiku and Obi, which has sparked speculation about a potential merger of opposition parties leading up to the 2027 general elections. The move to align opposition parties in an effort to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the upcoming election has been confirmed by Atiku, who emphasized the possibility of merging to achieve a common goal. If the new party decides to allocate the presidential ticket to the South-East region and selects Peter Obi, Atiku stated that he would not hesitate to support him. Atiku further reiterated his commitment to abide by the party’s decision, as he had previously stated that he would not contest the presidential ticket if it was zoned to the South or South-East. However, he did participate in the 2023 presidential ticket race as it was open to all party members. The bail application filed by Tigran Gambaryan, the detained Binance executive, was dismissed by an Abuja Federal High Court on Friday. Justice Emeka Nwite ruled that based on the evidence presented in the affidavit, granting bail to Gambaryan would result in him jumping bail. The judge carefully considered the evidence and concluded that the applicant cannot be trusted to remain in custody if granted bail. Despite the dismissal of the bail application, the judge ordered an accelerated hearing in the trial. This indicates that the case will proceed swiftly, ensuring a timely resolution. The decision to expedite the trial reflects the court's commitment to justice and efficiency in handling the matter. The ruling came after the counsel for the EFCC, Ekele Iheanacho, and Gambaryan's lawyer, Mark Mordi, SAN, presented their arguments and adopted their processes in support of or against the bail plea. The court had previously fixed the date for the ruling after these proceedings took place on April 23. The thorough examination of the arguments and evidence by the judge demonstrates a fair and diligent approach to the case. It is important to note that Gambaryan had been remanded in Kuje Correctional Centre after pleading not guilty to the money laundering charges brought against him by the EFCC. The charges also implicated Binance Holdings Limited and Nadeem Anjarwalla, another agent of the company. The EFCC alleged that they conspired to conceal the origin of the financial proceeds from their alleged unlawful activities in Nigeria, amounting to $35,400,000. These charges carry severe penalties under the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022. Anjarwalla, however, managed to escape from lawful custody on March 22 and fled to Kenya. This adds another layer of complexity to the case, as one of the accused individuals is currently at large. The court's decision to deny bail to Gambaryan may have been influenced by the risk of him following in Anjarwalla's footsteps and attempting to evade justice. In defense of Gambaryan's bail application, Mark Mordi argued that the EFCC had failed to provide any credible evidence to oppose the application. He claimed that the allegation that Gambaryan was planning to escape custody, like his colleague Anjarwalla, was false. Mordi emphasized the lack of exhibits or documents displaying the EFCC's credible intelligence to support their claims. However, Iheanacho presented a strong argument against granting bail to the Binance agent, emphasizing the risk involved due to his lack of ties to the community in Nigeria or a suitable surety to vouch for him. He pointed out Gambaryan's attempt to obtain a new US passport while in detention, despite his Nigerian passport being confiscated, indicating a potential flight risk. The lawyer expressed concerns that if bail was granted, the accused might abscond, similar to his colleague, and disagreed with Mordi's assertion that there was insufficient evidence of escape plans. Referring to the details provided in their counter affidavit, he highlighted the involvement of an investigative team member in the case, further strengthening their argument against bail. Ultimately, Iheanacho urged the court to reject the bail application or, as an alternative, return the applicant to EFCC custody if bail was to be granted, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation. The Enugu State Government has entered into a N100 billion partnership with Pragmatic Farms Limited to revive the United Palm Products Ltd (UPPL), a move that has been met with opposition from the Labour Party in the state. The party, led by Chairman Comrade Casmir Uchenna Agbo and Publicity Secretary Onuora Odo, has raised concerns about the legitimacy of the transaction, citing the suspiciously recent registration of the company just four days before signing the agreement. They fear that this partnership could be a front for siphoning the state’s resources, emphasizing the lack of evidence regarding the company’s capability to manage such a project. The Labour Party has sounded the alarm on what they perceive as potential economic exploitation and corruption, urging the people of the state to be vigilant. The political party has raised concerns regarding the transparency of the partnership deal involving the state governor and Diamond Stripes Limited, urging the people of Enugu State to remain vigilant. They pointed out discrepancies between the company’s stated business activities and its registration documents, calling for anti-corruption agencies to investigate what they perceive as a potentially dubious transaction. Despite welcoming efforts to revive state-owned projects, the party criticized what they described as a heavy tax burden on the state and emphasized the need for prudent resource management. The Senior Special Adviser to the Governor on External Relations clarified that the Enugu State Government would not be providing funds to Pragmatic Palms Ltd, the SPV for the partnership, but rather the company would finance the revitalization of UPPL with the state government contributing plantations as equity. According to the Senior Special Adviser, UPPL is part of the legacy of Dr. Michael Okpara, the late Premier of the defunct Eastern Region, and has been inactive for many years. The explanation provided aims to address concerns raised by the political party and shed light on the nature of the partnership agreement. According to the Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, there are government officials and security personnel who are actively supporting and aiding the rise of insecurity, particularly banditry, in Nigeria. During an appearance on Channels Television's program, Politics Today, the governor expressed his concerns about the difficulty in putting an end to banditry, stating that it has now become a lucrative "business venture" for criminals. He emphasized that these criminals include individuals within the government, security outfits, and those responsible for the day-to-day activities of their communities. These factors contribute to the challenges faced in combating banditry in the country. Governor Dikko Radda highlighted that the motives behind banditry are not driven by political reasons, dispelling the hypothesis that political motives are responsible for the rise of banditry. He further revealed that a significant number of northern youths are being recruited into banditry with a meager sum of N500. This revelation sheds light on the alarming ease with which individuals are being enticed into engaging in criminal activities, highlighting the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the root causes of banditry and ensure the security and well-being of the Nigerian population. Okai criticized Fanwo for his involvement in corrupt practices within the state, urging him to remain silent and issue an apology for his role in attempting to manipulate the justice system with monetary incentives. According to Okai, Fanwo's denial of any wrongdoing is futile, as the leaked group chat has exposed his true intentions and his close ties to those seeking power in Kogi state. The PDP candidate highlighted Fanwo's background, stating that he was brought in as a media assistant but has now deviated from his initial role to engage in unethical practices. The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, emphasized the importance of a living wage for workers, stating that it should be set at N615,000. Ajaero expressed his views during an interview on Channels Television, where he criticized the federal government's 35% pay rise for civil servants, calling it mischievous. He also highlighted that the previous minimum wage of N30,000 had expired on April 18. Ajaero expressed concern that the government had not reconvened discussions on the new minimum wage, despite legislation being passed through the national assembly. He further explained that the NLC and the TUC were worried about the timing of the government's announcement, as there was no actual wage increase being announced. Ajaero clarified that the NLC had agreed on N615,000 as the living wage for civil servants, emphasizing that it should be sufficient to cover basic needs without causing financial strain. He provided a breakdown of the figure, including allocations for housing and accommodation, electricity, utilities, and kerosene and gas expenses. The analysis focused on the expenses related to a family of six, with an estimated daily expenditure of N9,000. Over the course of 30 days, this amounts to a total of N270,000. In terms of medical expenses, a budget of N50,000 was considered, assuming that no surgical procedures or additional costs would be incurred. Moving on to clothing expenses, a sum of N20,000 was taken into account. When it comes to education, a budget of N50,000 was allocated. It is worth noting that for those who opt to enroll their children in private schools, this amount may not be sufficient to cover the expenses associated with such institutions. Additionally, a sanitation budget of N10,000 was included. The largest portion of the overall living wage was found to be allocated to transportation. This is primarily due to the fact that workers reside in the outskirts of the city and the high cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). As a result, transportation expenses amounted to N110,000. 4. Taking all these factors into consideration, the total living wage was calculated to be N615,000. It is recommended that further investigation be conducted to determine whether any savings can be achieved when compensating individuals at this rate. Mr Peter Obi, the former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu’s administration for proceeding with the highly controversial Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project despite widespread public opposition. He expressed his disappointment that the government is prioritizing this project over addressing urgent issues such as national security, poverty eradication, healthcare, and education, particularly for the poor and underprivileged. Obi further condemned the reported demolition of businesses and residences along the designated right of way for the project, describing it as both insensitive and heart-wrenching. He emphasized that not only are livelihoods being destroyed, but also lifetime investments are being wasted and jobs are disappearing as a result of these demolitions. Taking to his social media platform, Obi highlighted the fact that the hasty commencement of the project disregards the overwhelming outcry from the public, especially from business and property owners directly affected by the project. He criticized the federal government for lacking reason and compassion in its decision-making process, particularly considering the current challenging situation in the country. Obi concluded by expressing his deep concern over the sight of bulldozers tearing through communities, overturning the homes of the elderly and leaving a trail of destruction in their wake. He called for a reconsideration of the project, urging the government to prioritize the well-being and livelihoods of its citizens over the implementation of a project that has faced significant opposition and is causing immense harm to individuals and communities along its path. This premature commencement of the project disregards the widespread opposition from the public, particularly business and property owners directly impacted by the development. The potential repercussions of this initiative as it advances towards impoverished rural areas remain uncertain. Numerous employment opportunities are on the verge of disappearing, with investments exceeding $200 million hanging in the balance. More than 100,000 jobs in the leisure and hospitality industry are at risk of vanishing, alongside 80 small enterprises and their 4000 predominantly young workers. In a period marked by high levels of joblessness, the government is initiating a project that could lead to job losses. The economic setbacks currently witnessed are mainly concentrated in the initial sections around Lagos. Nevertheless, the 700-kilometer expanse of this roadway will traverse rural territories where affected individuals lack the means, authority, or influence to advocate for their rights. A considerable portion of the populace has raised concerns about the pre-project approval process, yet the government remains indifferent to dissenting voices. While recognizing the economic significance of the road, which traces its origins back to the era of Tafewa Balewa, several factors have evolved. Widespread insecurity and poverty prevail, relegating this project to a lower priority in today’s national agenda. It is imperative to scrutinize the rationale and timing of this endeavor and others like it. The country is grappling with its worst economic crisis in history, with poverty and hunger on the rise. Basic necessities are beyond the reach of the majority of Nigerians. This juncture demands that a responsible government refrains from pursuing non-essential projects. Existing highways are in urgent need of repair, and the prevailing insecurity renders travel perilous. Just recently, a tragic incident occurred on the East-West road in Rivers State, resulting in numerous fatalities and the destruction of over 70 vehicles due to a fuel tanker explosion. The deplorable state of the road, neglected for years and requiring immediate attention, was a primary factor in this catastrophe. Our economy is faltering, and our healthcare facilities are inadequately equipped. Why undertake such a project at this critical juncture? The Nigerian National Petroleum Company, NNPC Ltd, has provided reassurance to the citizens of Nigeria that the ongoing fuel scarcity and long queues will be completely resolved by Wednesday, May 1st. The Chief Communications Officer of NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, made this announcement to the press in Lagos on Tuesday. Soneye mentioned that the company currently has an excess of 1.5 billion liters of fuel in stock, which is sufficient to last for a minimum of 30 days. He explained that a recent three-day distribution disruption due to logistical challenges had been successfully addressed. Despite the resolution of the logistical issues, Soneye acknowledged that it usually takes double the time to recover from such disruptions and return to normal operations. He also highlighted that some individuals were exploiting the situation to make undue profits, although product scarcity had been relatively low recently. Soneye assured that the long queues would be cleared out by the end of the day or by the following day. Additionally, the National Vice President of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Hammed Fashola, expressed confidence that the queues in Lagos and Ogun would diminish this week based on the information provided by NNPCL. Fashola did mention that the queues in Abuja might persist a bit longer due to the distance from Lagos and potential delays in the supply chain. He explained that the movement of ships from the mother vessel to the daughter vessel before reaching the depot tanks could cause delays, but he anticipated more products being available for lifting by marketers by Tuesday or Wednesday. Blackface, a well-known dancehall singer and former member of the now-defunct Plantashun Boiz group, expressed his skepticism about the possibility of the group reuniting in the future. The group, which consisted of Blackface, 2Face also known as 2Baba, and Faze, was a prominent force in the Nigerian music industry during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Although they briefly reunited in 2007 after initially disbanding in 2004, Blackface emphasized in a recent interview with Channels TV that the chances of another reunion were slim. He mentioned that if a reunion were feasible, it would have likely occurred by now. Blackface stated, “I don’t see that [Plantashun Boiz reunion] happening. If it is something that would have happened, the members would have deemed it fit to sit down and discuss going forward. Of which they haven’t done and don’t want to do. I don’t want to cajole someone into doing what they don’t want to do.” When asked about his current relationship with his former bandmates, Blackface revealed that he maintains communication with Faze and the family of 2Baba, but personally, he and 2Baba have no discussions unless it pertains to business. He emphasized the importance of commitment to a project and expressed his reluctance to wait for someone who is not fully dedicated. Mr Osita Okechukwu, a founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed his belief that the leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) should take responsibility for the challenges the party is facing. This statement was made in response to Senator Adolphus Wabara, the former Senate President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the PDP. Senator Wabara had warned that the ruling APC's attempt to establish a one-party state in Nigeria would be strongly resisted. The recent resignation of prominent figures such as former Governor of Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Chuka Odom, and many others from the PDP further highlights the party's troubles. However, Okechukwu argues that blaming the APC for these issues is misplaced. He points out that as long as other political parties like Obi's Labour Party, Kwankwaso's NNPP, and Wike's Masquerade continue to welcome defectors from the PDP, there is no valid concern about Nigeria becoming a one-party state. Okechukwu emphasizes that the blame game played by the PDP's BoT Chairman is not a solution to the party's problems. Instead, he urges the PDP to reflect on its internal issues and find ways to address them. This includes addressing the departures of key figures like Obi and Kwankwaso, as well as resolving the challenges faced by Wike's Masquerade. Okechukwu suggests that the PDP should focus on strengthening internal democracy, adhering to zoning conventions, and avoiding planlessness and wastefulness. Rather than constantly blaming the APC, the PDP should take a critical look at itself and work towards rebuilding the party. My interpretation of the criticism from our senior political figure is that the People's Democratic Party (PDP) might face difficulties in recovering in August following the ward, Local Government Area (LGA), and State congresses, as well as the national convention. This is due to their failure from the beginning to engage in a thorough self-reflection to understand the underlying reasons behind the departure of Obi and Kwankwaso, particularly Wike's Masquerade, which caused a party that prided itself on a 60-year uninterrupted rule to suffer a significant defeat in the 2023 presidential election. It is evident that the PDP must engage in a process of introspection to rectify its mistakes, rather than simply ignoring the issues within its troubled factions. The American International School of Abuja (AISA) has formally requested the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to provide accurate banking information for the purpose of refunding fees that were paid for the education of Yahaya Bello’s children. The school, in a letter addressed to the Lagos zonal commander of the EFCC, stated that a total of $845,852 has been paid in tuition fees from September 7, 2021, up until the present time. However, AISA clarified that the amount to be refunded is $760,910, as they have already deducted the cost of educational services that have been provided. The school emphasized the need for an official written request from the EFCC, along with the authentic banking details, in order to proceed with the refund. AISA also mentioned that no further fees are expected for tuition, as the students’ fees have been settled until their graduation from the school. Advertisements They concluded the letter by stating that they will notify the anti-graft agency if any additional deposits are made by the Bello family. In a press release issued by Greg Hughes, the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) also stated that Ali Bello had made contact with the school on Friday, August 13, 2021, with a request to pay the school fees for his family in advance until his children graduate from High School. According to The Nation, on April 17, operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) surrounded Bello’s residence in Abuja in an attempt to apprehend him for an alleged fraud amounting to N80.2 billion. During the operation, Governor Usman Ododo of Kogi State arrived at the property and reportedly whisked Bello away. Several days later, the Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, disclosed that Yahaya Bello, the former governor, had transferred $720,000 from the government’s funds to a bureau de change before leaving office in order to prepay his child’s school fees.
