by Euphemia Udanoh President Muhammadu Buhari is running a sectional government where he’s openly said he will favor those who voted for him that he called the 97% against those who did not vote for him whom he called 5%. He has started fulfilling his threat by giving 75% of the federal appointments to the north and 0% to the 5% South Easterners. Fuel still sells at N100 a litre (in some places it is as high as N150) as against the official rate of N87 during the last administration. Buhari released 182 Boko Haram suspects in his first two weeks in office and dismantled military road blocks and now we have Boko Haram members all over Nigeria instead of their known domain in North East. Buhari has installed his “niece”, and in-law, Amina Bala Zakari to head Nigeria’s electoral commission, INEC, thereby violating the constitution for the sole purpose of rigging coming state elections in favour of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC). Buhari also violated the constitution by appointing his cousin, Lawal Daura as Director General of the DSS. He then went on to used Nigeria’s Secret Police, the Department of State Security Services (DSS) to torture and detain INEC officials in states where APC lost election during the last election but have not asked questions into the cases of election malpractice reported in the Northern states like Yobe. The INEC returning officer in Kano was burnt alive with his family after the elections which saw Buhari sweep 2 million votes in the state, and widespread documented reports of underaged voters, and Buhari have not started investigating their death. Buhari have not appointed a single minister to chart an agenda for the economy, causing Nigeria to lose trillions in the stock market. He has ignored the constitutional requirement for federal character in his appoints. This disdain for Nigeria’s constitution, if it continues, will destroy the institutions of government. Nepotism is 100% visible in the appointments he’s given so far. He has approved some illicit banking policies that has crippled imports and exports. Unemployment rate has grown with an unimaginable percentage. Nigeria’s economy which has run on a growth rate of 7% in the past three years has dropped to 3.5% growth in Buhari’s first quarter in office. Nigeria’s currency has remained worthless in the exchange market despite all the unorthodox measures – like chopping down trees – Buhari has applied. Buhari is negotiating with Boko Haram, and has beforehand approved amnesty for the deadly terrorist group. after they have killed 60,000 Nigerians. Boko Haram is now stronger than they were in the past, killing a minimum of 200 people weekly. Buhari has muzzled the press on reportage of Boko Haram attacks and other news that’s against his government. Buhari, through his ambassador in Lebanon granted visa to a fugitive ISIS cleric on the run from the law in his country. Buhari promised to declare his assets publicly but have not done so. Not only that, just two days ago, he denied all his campaign promises. He claims they were made by his political party and not he. But, he did not deny any of them during his campaigns. As a matter of fact, Buhari is on record reaffirming those promises. Buhari has admitted that old age will limit his performance and has so far exhibited it in his utterances where he forgets names of things and places. Buhari owned up that ex-governors whose state went bankrupt funded his campaign with their state funds and for that, he offered them bailout fund from the federal treasury, a treasury he claimed was empty when he resumed. Buhari has ordered the stop of the construction of the 2nd Niger Bridge, just to punish the 5% that did not vote for him. He relocated Boko Haram prisoners to a small prison in Ekwuluobia, South East Nigeria where he was rejected, posing a big threat to that society because Boko Haram is known to stage daring and deadly prison breaks where their members are held. In summary, its been a wasted 100 days for Buhari. Euphemia Udanoh is an author, scriptwriter, and youth activist. She can be reached by email.
