The Senate of the University of Port Harcourt on Friday announced the expulsion of 22 students of the university for various offences including assaulting a female lecturer.
A statement signed by the Registrar of the university, Dorcas Otto, in Port Harcourt, said that the offences also included being members of different cult groups and undermining security on the campus.
According to the statement, the decision to expel the students was taken at the 426th Senate Meeting of the university held on Wednesday.
It further disclosed that eight of the students were expelled for being part of different cult groups, two students expelled for assaulting a female lecturer and disrupting a congress meeting of the department.
“Twelve other students expelled were former presidents of faculty associations,” the statement said.
According to it, the senate of the university also announced that the institution has closed for the Christmas/New Year Break and will resume on January 3, 2017.

A British man with HIV undergoing a pioneering treatment to cure him of the disease has shown “remarkable” progress, doctors have told a newspaper.

Scientists treating the 44-year-old patient are now hopeful of a breakthrough in what has been described as “one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV”.

Results showed the man’s most recent blood test showed no detectable HIV was present.

The research is being carried out by a collaboration of five of Britain’s top universities organised by the National Health Service.

Mark Samuels, managing director of the National Institute for Health Research Office for Clinical Research Infrastructure, told the Sunday Times: “This is one of the first serious attempts at a full cure for HIV. We are exploring the real possibility of curing HIV.

“This is a huge challenge and it’s still early days but the progress has been remarkable.”

The trial patient told the newspaper that recent blood tests showed no detectable HIV virus was present, although it was too early to confirm that the treatment had worked.

The new therapy aims to overcome a major barrier to clearing the virus from a sufferer’s body that has challenged researchers for decades.

Current methods using antiretroviral therapies (Art) fall short of ridding patients of HIV, as the virus can hide out of the drugs’ reach in the immune system’s T-cells.

By sheltering in dormant T-cells the virus can later take over its host and use it to produce thousands of copies of itself, should Art no longer work.

The research by Oxford and Cambridge universities, Imperial College London, University College London, and King’s College London, is testing a “kick and kill” technique to first expose, then destroy the virus.

First a vaccine helps the body find infected T-cells. This is then followed by a course of the drug Vorinostat that awakens the dormant T-cells, which then begin producing HIV proteins that act as a homing beacon to the immune system.

Imperial College London consultant physician Professor Sarah Fidler said the treatment worked in the laboratory and there was “good evidence” it will work in patients.

However she added: “We must stress we are still a long way from any actual therapy.”

BREAKING : NDU LECTURERS ON INDEFINITE STRIKE

The NDU branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) today in a unanimous vote resolved to embark on an indefinite strike untill all outstanding salaries accruable are paid.

This followed an extra ordinary meeting held at the Unversity auditorium which attracted a massive turn out of members. The turn out was described by one member as historical.

The resolution is as follows, "In recognition of the financial and psychological effect of the non payment of salaries since January 2016, congress hereby resolves to stop work henceforth untill all outstanding salaries accruable are paid".

" Congress also calls on the state government to pay all salaries of staff not paid since 2013 while the state government is also called upon to revoke the obnoxious practice of promotion without financial benefits."  

The resolution was preceded by an address by the vice president of ASUU Prof. Biodun Owoyemi, who represented the president. He briefed members on the outcome of his team's meeting with the state deputy governor Rear Admiral John Gborigbogha Jonah and the vice chancellor of the University Prof. Humphrey Ogoni.

He described NDU as a University that has been abandoned and in lack of the necessary structures and infrastructure befitting of a University. Prof. Owoyemi condemned the lack of perimeter fencing, Senate and Administrative building, internal roads etc and called on ASUU members to be steadfast in insisting on their rights.

The National Executive Council of ASUU has about 48 hours to ratify the resolution of the lecturers.

It could be recalled that NDU lecturers have not been paid since January this year, making them experience untold hardship and unprecedented suffering.

Members spoken to by PostiveImpact express satisfaction with the outcome of the meeting, describing the action of the lecturers as long overdue. They expressed optimism that the state government would be wise enough to do the right thing.

Since our beloved BBMIDID got blocked by mtn, I have been managing Facebook subscription, after subscribing N60.00 for Facebook, I get 35mb on mobile tv and 25mb on facebook, which I can renew anytime and it accumulates, I can use the 35mb freely without any SAS or psiphon, but when it finishes, I can't access my 25mb from the Facebook, using Facebook,com on simple server and psiphon it still doesn't work, I have accumulated up to 114 Facebook mb that I can't use, please can anyone help me out
