In a decisive response to the escalating banditry crisis, the Kebbi State government has unveiled plans to impose the death penalty or life imprisonment for individuals convicted of aiding bandits as informants. The announcement comes as the region grapples with a security emergency that has claimed over 10,000 lives and displaced millions since 2011, according to a 2023 report by the International Crisis Group. The proposal was highlighted during a community gathering, where traditional leaders and officials convened, their presence symbolizing the cultural weight behind the policy. However, the effectiveness of such severe measures remains uncertain, with a 2020 study in the Journal of African Law indicating that capital punishment has limited success in deterring crime in conflict zones. This approach mirrors a regional trend, following Kano State’s 2022 threat of the death penalty for banditry offenses under Governor Abdullahi Ganduje. The Kebbi initiative follows recent violence, including an attack in Tadurga village, Zuru Local Government Area, where bandits killed approximately ten people, looted stores, and stole livestock, prompting urgent appeals from the Emir of Zuru, Major General Muhammadu Sani Sami Gomo II. Governor Nasir Idris has committed to bolstering security with additional military units and resources, vowing to protect residents at all costs. Yet, rural development challenges, recently spotlighted by newly crowned Queen Maryam Elisha, could hinder enforcement outside urban centers. The government has also cautioned against politically driven misinformation, calling for collective action to address the crisis. Public sentiment varies, with some expressing frustration over ongoing insecurity, while local groups like the Zuru and Tadurga Concerned Patriots have praised the government’s response to the Tadurga incident, countering criticism from former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami. The political landscape in Nigeria is buzzing with speculation following the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) announcement of 110 new applications for political party registrations, submitted as of Monday, June 23, 2025. Among the standout names on the list are the Obidient Peoples Party (OPP), Progressive Obedients Party (POP), and Obedients Peoples Party (OBP), which have been linked to supporters of Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate whose “Obidient” movement galvanized a youthful electorate in the 2023 elections. The INEC list, released earlier today, has ignited a firestorm of debate, particularly around the involvement of the Obidient movement—a grassroots initiative that has distanced itself from these registration attempts. According to a statement from INEC Chairman Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the commission is processing all applications impartially, adhering to the stringent requirements outlined in Section 222 of the 1999 Constitution. These include submitting detailed documentation and meeting administrative fees, with a 30-day window to rectify any deficiencies. Obidient movement has distanced itself from the drama, but yet to disown the OPP. Analysts are suggesting, it is opposition at work and a plot to make it impossible to register the coalition vehicle, All Democratic Alliance ahead of 2027 Presidential Elections. Full List: 1. Multichoice Nigeria, the parent company of pay-TV giant DStv, has announced a dramatic 50% reduction in decoder prices, dropping the cost from ₦20,000 to ₦10,000, in a strategic move to reverse a steep decline in subscribers. The decision, revealed today, comes amid growing competition from streaming platforms and mounting customer dissatisfaction with rising subscription fees. The price cut follows a reported loss of 2.4 million subscribers in 2024, a trend exacerbated by multiple fee hikes—25-26% in 2024 alone, with an additional increase implemented earlier this year. This subscriber exodus has been fueled by Nigeria’s soaring inflation, which reached 33.2% in 2024, making DStv’s premium packages increasingly unaffordable for many households. Customers have increasingly turned to alternatives like Netflix, Showmax, and iROKOtv, with a 2023 International Telecommunication Union study noting that 60% of African households have adopted streaming due to its cost-effectiveness. In a statement, Multichoice Nigeria’s CEO, John Ugbe, emphasized the company’s intent to “give back” amid economic pressures, aiming to boost content discovery across genres such as movies, sports, and news. The promo also includes a free DStv upgrade, positioning the service as an everyday value proposition rather than a luxury tied to major events. However, the move has sparked mixed reactions on social media. Many Nigerians argue that the real issue lies not with decoder prices but with the steep monthly subscription fees, which have risen three times since 2023. “If they like, let the decoder be ₦5,000, we won’t buy—old movies and high subscriptions are the problem,” tweeted one frustrated user. Others have pointed to successful boycotts in Ghana, where a 33% temporary fee reduction was introduced after a 30-day ultimatum, and Uganda, where a 2024 boycott led Multichoice to petition the government to block streaming imports. The Ugandan case has raised eyebrows, with Multichoice seeking to curb the influx of digital streaming products amid declining sales. Ugandan consumers, however, remain resolute, demanding improved services or a complete withdrawal of DStv from the market. Industry analysts suggest that while the price slash may attract some customers, it might not address the root cause of DStv’s challenges. “This feels like a reactive measure against a global shift toward streaming,” said a telecom expert. “With affordable alternatives gaining traction, Multichoice needs a broader strategy to stay competitive.” Source: https://preciousudohblog.com.ng/dstv-slashes-decoder-price-by-50-in-bold-bid-to-win-back-nigerian-subscribers/

Prophet Jeremiah Omoto Fufeyin, the controversial founder of Christ Mercyland Deliverance Ministry, unveiled a new spectacle during a recent Sunday service: an inflatable aircraft balloon purportedly designed to “carry away” the problems of his congregants. The event, captured in a video circulating on social media, shows Fufeyin energetically wielding the balloon, declaring it a vessel for divine intervention as part of his ministry’s latest approach to spiritual deliverance. The service, held in Warri, Delta State, featured Fufeyin instructing his followers to project their troubles onto the balloon, which he then “flew” around the church premises. This theatrical display is consistent with Fufeyin’s history of employing dramatic and symbolic acts to engage his audience, a strategy that has both captivated and polarized public opinion. The video, shared by the account @NigeriaStories on X, has sparked a mix of amusement and criticism online, with some users questioning the appropriateness of such methods in a religious setting. This latest episode comes at a time when Fufeyin is already embroiled in significant legal and public disputes. In 2024, he filed a ₦1 billion defamation lawsuit against social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, following the activist’s vocal criticism of Fufeyin’s “miracle” products, including healing soaps and mustard seeds. VeryDarkMan’s challenge to the authenticity and regulatory approval of these items by Nigeria’s National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has fueled a broader debate about the intersection of faith, commerce, and consumer protection in Nigeria. NAFDAC’s involvement underscores the regulatory challenges facing Fufeyin’s ministry. In September 2024, the agency announced an investigation into his spiritual products, warning the public about their unapproved status and potential health risks. Despite this, Fufeyin has continued to market these items, claiming divine endorsement and miraculous properties, a stance that has drawn both devotees and detractors. The inflatable aircraft balloon incident is emblematic of Fufeyin’s approach to ministry, which often blends spectacle with spirituality. His actions have been both a source of fascination and frustration, reflecting the complex dynamics of religious leadership in Nigeria. While some see his methods as innovative ways to engage faith, others view them as exploitative, especially given the financial implications for his followers. Former presidential candidate and Labour Party stalwart Peter Obi today delivered a scathing critique of Nigeria’s governance, linking the country’s spiraling insecurity to decades of neglect and poverty. Obi’s statement calls for a radical rethink of national priorities, urging leaders to invest in human development rather than rely on military solutions. Obi, who has consistently championed social equity, argued that the criminality gripping Nigeria—ranging from banditry to insurgency—is no accident. “It is the cumulative outcome of misplaced priorities, poor governance, mismanagement of public resources, monumental corruption, and systemic neglect,” he wrote. Citing stark statistics, he noted that nearly 100 million Nigerians live in extreme poverty, while over 140 million face multidimensional poverty, according to the 2022 National Bureau of Statistics. The former Anambra State Governor found an unlikely ally in General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, who recently told Al Jazeera in 2025 that addressing poverty, unemployment, and lack of education is critical to tackling insecurity. “You cannot fight insecurity with bullets alone,” Musa said, a sentiment echoed by a 2023 World Bank report linking 40% of Nigeria’s population to extreme poverty and heightened crime rates. Obi drew on the wisdom of Mallam Aminu Kano, the 1960s political icon whose philosophy, as analyzed in the International Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities Review, warned that abandoning the masses breeds unrest—a prophecy fulfilled in today’s Nigeria. He also invoked Mother Teresa’s words: “When a poor person dies of hunger, it has not happened because God did not take care of him or her. It has happened because neither you nor I wanted to give that person what he or she needed.” This aligns with a 2019 Lancet study, which attributes hunger-related deaths to systemic failures rather than individual shortcomings. Rejecting “business as usual,” Obi proposed a strategic shift toward education, healthcare, and agriculture as pillars of national security. “Every naira we invest in people today is one less bullet we need to fire tomorrow,” he declared, framing these investments as a path to a “new Nigeria.” His vision challenges the government’s focus on high-profile infrastructure projects, which he dismissed as lacking “soul or purpose.” Source: https://preciousudohblog.com.ng/breaking-peter-obi-links-poverty-to-nigerias-security-crisis-calls-for-urgent-action/

In a recent video that has gone viral, Nigerian social media personality Aderombi Adedayo Martin, better known as DeeOne, has voiced strong criticism against fellow influencer Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), for his decision to involve school children in a public protest. The video, which has sparked significant debate, underscores the ongoing tensions within Nigeria's social media landscape regarding activism and its implications. DeeOne's remarks center on what he perceives as a lack of direction and desperation in VDM's actions. He specifically pointed out that the protest, which featured minors holding banners, was not only misguided but also potentially harmful to the children involved. "In a country that works, VDM, the parents of these children and the teachers are supposed to all be arrested by the police," DeeOne stated, emphasizing his belief that such involvement constitutes a serious ethical breach. The criticism comes at a time when VDM, known for his controversial stance against injustice and bad governance, has been a polarizing figure. His activism, which began gaining traction in 2022, has included multiple arrests by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for various allegations, including cyberbullying and defamation. Despite these challenges, VDM has maintained a significant following, often engaging in high-profile confrontations with government officials and public figures. DeeOne's video has not only reignited discussions about the appropriateness of involving minors in activism but also highlighted the broader issues of social media influence and responsibility. He argued that VDM's actions, particularly using children to make a point, undermine the credibility of his cause and exploit vulnerable individuals. "These are minors, these people are here against their will," DeeOne added, suggesting that the children were being used for content creation rather than genuine advocacy. A Calabar Pastor, David Nyong Okon has been arrested for allegedly blinding a girl with a mighty punch, because he didn’t like her tone. David Okon is founder of The God of a Stainless Hand International Church, Cross River. Apparently, he drove recklessly and almost hit the 19 year old girl and her friend where they stood. So, she spoke out condemning his driving. He got off the car and punched her in the face, because he didn’t like how she was talking to him, asking her if she knew who he was, regardless. As she collapsed to the ground bleeding, Pastor tried to flee. Youths gathered and forced him to take her for treatments. He reluctantly took her to a chemist, they couldn’t help. They urged him to take her to UCTH, where he allegedly abandoned her for two weeks, prompting the family to charge the police to find and arrest him. According to Cross River Watch, the 19 year old girl, Godsgift Edem Edet will remain blind as surgical procedures couldn’t fix the damages. The assault happened on May 31st, at Obame Ikoya Street next to Calabar Municipal Council Secretariat. Social media influencer VeryDarkMan (VDM) organized a protest at the gate of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, addressing the ongoing teachers' strike that has severely impacted primary school education in Abuja. The strike, rooted in unpaid salaries, has left children out of school for weeks, prompting a powerful demonstration by VDM and a group of schoolchildren. The protest, captured in a viral video, featured schoolchildren dressed in their uniforms, holding placards with poignant messages such as "You call us leader of tomorrow while stopping our school for 9 weeks." This strike, which began in December 2024 with intermittent boycotts, has now escalated into a full-blown crisis, disrupting the education of countless young students in the FCT. VDM's initiative comes at a time when the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and other labor unions have struggled to resolve the issue, despite a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in December 2024. The MoU aimed to address the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage and settle outstanding allowances, but progress has been stalled, leading to continued industrial action. The lack of resolution has not only paralyzed over 400 public primary schools but also highlighted a broader failure in governance and public service delivery. The FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, has been criticized for prioritizing infrastructure projects over essential services like education. Despite allocating not less than N140 billion to education in the 2025 budget, the persistent strike and unpaid salaries suggest a disconnect between financial commitments and actual service delivery. This protest, therefore, serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for effective policy implementation and accountability. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) conducted an overnight raid in Ado-Ekiti, the capital city of Ekiti State, Nigeria. The operation, aimed at curbing internet fraud, commonly referred to as "Yahoo Yahoo," resulted in the arrest of several suspects and the seizure of multiple vehicles. This action is part of the EFCC's ongoing efforts to combat financial crimes, a mission that has been central to the agency since its establishment in 2003. The raid, captured in a video that has since circulated widely, shows EFCC operatives entering residential areas, breaking into homes, and confiscating personal belongings, including luxury cars. The video, which has garnered significant attention, highlights the intensity of the operation, with scenes of operatives searching through wardrobes and other personal spaces. This operation is not an isolated incident. Historical data reveals that the EFCC has previously targeted Ekiti State in similar crackdowns. For instance, in 2019, the agency arrested over 80 suspects in a single operation codenamed "Operation Cyber Storm," underscoring the region's reputation as a hotspot for cybercrime. The latest raid continues this trend, with the EFCC aiming to disrupt the activities of suspected fraudsters who have allegedly been operating under the cover of night. However, the operation has not been without controversy. Social media reactions have been swift and critical, with many users expressing dismay at the EFCC's methods. One user described the agency's actions as "devilish," accusing them of entering estates overnight, arresting individuals, and seizing property without due process. Another user questioned the legality and ethics of the operation, suggesting that the EFCC's approach might be more akin to that of armed robbers than law enforcement officers. These reactions highlight a broader concern about the balance between aggressive crime-fighting measures and the protection of civil liberties. A video surfaced showing Nigerian police officers engaging in a violent confrontation with a young man, with reports of gunfire, reigniting concerns over police brutality in the country. In a disturbing development that has once again thrust the issue of police brutality into the spotlight, a video has emerged depicting a violent encounter between Nigerian police officers and a young man. The footage, which surfaced on Monday, June 23, 2025, shows the young man being aggressively confronted by officers, with reports indicating that shots were fired during the altercation. This incident has reignited widespread concern over the conduct of law enforcement in Nigeria and the urgent need for systemic reform. The video, which has quickly gone viral, captures a chaotic scene where the young man appears to be overpowered by multiple officers, some of whom are seen wielding firearms. The exact circumstances leading to the confrontation remain unclear, but the use of force, including the alleged firing of shots, has sparked outrage among viewers and social media users. This event is not an isolated occurrence but part of a broader pattern of police misconduct in Nigeria. The EndSARS movement, which gained international attention in 2020, was a direct response to similar acts of brutality by the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). Nigerian music superstar Davido has taken to social media to accuse security personnel at the world-renowned Hï Ibiza nightclub of attempting to kill him and his team during a recent outing. The allegations, posted on Instagram and amplified by fans on X, have sparked widespread concern and debate. The controversy erupted when Davido, whose real name is David Adeleke, shared a series of images on his Instagram Story, purportedly showing the security staff involved. In a dramatic caption, he warned that those responsible “will all go down” for the incident, claiming his life flashed before his eyes. This incident coincides with Davido’s attendance at a high-profile Black Coffee event at Hï Ibiza, a venue recognized as the World’s #1 Club by DJ Mag, attracting over 800,000 visitors in 2024. The timing suggests the alleged altercation may have stemmed from a celebrity-related dispute, possibly exacerbated by the club’s reported 15% increase in security incidents since 2022, according to a 2023 DJ Mag analysis. As of now, no official police report, statement from Hï Ibiza management, or confirmation from Davido’s team has been released to substantiate the claims. Context and Implications Davido, with over 30 million Instagram followers, is currently on a widely publicized European tour, making this incident a significant talking point. Hï Ibiza, known for its cutting-edge production and elite DJ lineups, has yet to respond officially. The lack of immediate verification leaves room for speculation, but the cultural tendency to rally around celebrity safety—evident in past cases like the 2019 Burna Boy security clash in Lagos—suggests this story will continue to evolve. Authorities have arrested a man identified as Walter Okafor for allegedly selling counterfeit condoms packaged as "Kiss" condoms, sparking widespread concern over public health and safety. The arrest, reported by Nigeria Stories on X on June 21, 2025, at 09:28 UTC, comes with images of the fake products, which mimic the branding of legitimate condoms, raising alarms about the potential for increased transmission of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and unintended pregnancies. According to a 2022 World Health Organization (WHO) report on counterfeit medical products, fake condoms can fail at rates up to 50% higher than genuine ones, posing a severe risk to users. This incident aligns with a broader trend of counterfeit goods plaguing Nigeria, exemplified by the Lagos Tech Market's recent introduction of a mandatory biometric ID system in May 2025 to combat fraud in informal markets. The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) further underscored the global scale of this issue with the 2024 seizure of 40,000 counterfeit condoms from China, highlighting the international scope of the problem. The counterfeit condoms, showcased in images shared by Nigeria Stories, include packaging and individual units that closely resemble the "Kiss" brand, a popular product known for its quality. However, experts warn that such fakes often contain substandard materials or incorrect dosages, rendering them ineffective. A 2023 Nigerian Health Journal study revealed that 30% of sampled drugs and medical devices in Lagos were substandard, pointing to systemic quality control failures that likely facilitated this incident. Authorities have charged Okafor to court, and the case is under investigation. Health experts are urging the public to purchase condoms only from verified sources and are calling for stricter regulations to prevent such incidents. This event serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced oversight in Nigeria’s medical and consumer goods markets, as the country grapples with the dual challenges of economic informality and public safety. Nigerian sprinter Favour Ofili, celebrated for her world-best 150m run of 15.85 seconds at the Adidas Atlanta City Games in May 2025, has switched her athletic allegiance to Turkey. The decision, formalized on May 31, 2025, comes after the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian National Olympic Committee (NOC) failed to register her for the 100m event at the 2024 Paris Olympics—marking the second time administrative negligence has cost her an Olympic appearance. This latest setback follows a similar incident in 2021, when Ofili missed the Tokyo Olympics 200m due to the AFN and Nigerian Anti-Doping Committee’s failure to conduct timely tests, a blunder that also affected 13 other athletes. According to the report, Ofili expressed her exasperation to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), a move triggered by years of neglect. Compounding the issue, the same AFN leadership was re-elected in June 2025, raising questions about accountability in Nigerian sports governance. A 2022 World Athletics report had previously flagged mismanagement in 40% of African federations, a statistic that now seems to resonate with Ofili’s experience. Turkey’s appeal is clear: the country offers substantial Olympic medal bonuses, with $531,638 for gold in 2024, according to Türkiye Today data, compared to Nigeria’s lack of a formal payout system. This financial incentive, coupled with a promise of better support, appears to have influenced Ofili’s decision, though she has emphasized that her switch was not solely financially motivated. Her personal bests—10.93 seconds in the 100m and 21.96 seconds in the 200m—position her as a medal contender, making her a valuable asset for Turkey. This move underscores deeper systemic issues in Nigerian sports administration, as detailed in a recent TheCable article calling for urgent reforms amid repeated failures, including cases like cyclist Ese Ukpeseraye borrowing a bike at Paris 2024. As Ofili prepares to represent Turkey, her departure serves as both a personal triumph and a stark warning to Nigeria’s sports authorities, who risk losing more talent to nations offering better governance and support. In a dramatic late-night announcement on Saturday, June 21, 2025, former President Donald J. Trump, via his X account, claimed that the United States military successfully conducted airstrikes on three key Iranian nuclear facilities: Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. The post, timestamped 23:53 UTC, stated that a "full payload of BOMBS was dropped on the primary site, Fordow," with all planes now safely returning home. Trump congratulated the "great American Warriors" and declared, "NOW IS THE TIME FOR PEACE," marking a significant escalation in U.S. involvement in the ongoing Iran-Israel tensions. The targeted sites are central to Iran’s nuclear program. The Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, located 160 km south of Tehran and buried up to 80 meters underground, has been a focal point of international concern since its disclosure in 2009. According to Wikipedia’s updated entry on "Nuclear Facilities in Iran" (last edited June 22, 2025, 02:12 UTC), Fordow has been enriching uranium, with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reporting in March 2023 that enrichment reached 83.7%—just shy of the 90% needed for a nuclear weapon. Natanz and Esfahan host additional enrichment and conversion facilities, making them critical targets in efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear capabilities. The announcement aligns with Trump’s long-standing opposition to Iran’s nuclear ambitions. A White House statement from June 17, 2025, reiterated his pledge: “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon,” a stance he has maintained since at least 2011 (White House, www.whitehouse.gov). However, the depth and fortified nature of Fordow raise questions about the strikes’ effectiveness, with no independent verification available as of this report. This move follows heightened tensions in the Iran-Israel proxy conflict, as detailed by Wikipedia’s “Iran–Israel Proxy Conflict” page (updated June 21, 2025, 22:20 UTC). The Associated Press reported on June 22, 2025, at 05:18 UTC, that the U.S. joined Israel’s efforts to disrupt Iran’s nuclear program, with Trump speaking from the White House alongside Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. Analysis The strike marks a significant shift, with the U.S. directly inserting itself into the Iran-Israel conflict, contradicting Trump’s 2025 campaign rhetoric of Middle East stability, as reported by BBC on June 18, 2025. The “time for peace” claim may reflect a strategic pivot to negotiate from strength, though it has fueled debates about U.S. foreign policy consistency. Independent analysts, including those cited by AP, note the risk of retaliation, with Iran’s proxy networks—detailed in Wikipedia’s conflict overview—potentially escalating regional instability. As of 06:44 AM WAT, no official U.S. government statement beyond Trump’s X post has confirmed the operation, and Iran has yet to release a detailed response. The international community awaits further developments, with the IAEA likely to assess the damage to Fordow and other sites in the coming days.
