Emergency Power: Key Maintenance Practices for Generators

Gasoline or liquid propane (LP) gas generators use a gas-driven engine connected directly to an electric generator. In a typical application, the gas engine starts automatically in an emergency, turning the generator rotor and inducing an electric current in the stator. It continues to produce power as long as the engine runs.
A stationary gas engine uses a starter connected to a battery and electrical system, cooling system, lubrication system, fuel system, and drive train. It also uses a transfer switch that interlocks with the main power system to shift power sources in an emergency.
Each of these subsystems in gas and diesel engines has unique inspection, troubleshooting, and repair needs. The best way to maintain these units is to give attention to each major component.
The transfer of power in an emergency starts when the transfer switch receives a no-power signal, indicating failure in the main power source. The transfer switch disconnects from that source and connects the battery to the starter, starting the engine through the engine’s electrical system.
The drive train connects to the water, oil, and fuel circulating systems and to the emergency generator, which begins producing electricity as soon as the engine begins to rotate.
Inspection and maintenance procedures consist of making sure water, oil, gas, and battery electrolytes are available in the proper quantity and condition. Technicians can easily overlook this step, but because the emergency equipment is idle most of the time, evaporation, leakage or contamination can take their toll.
Technicians tend to lubricate other components, such as bearings requiring grease, infrequently because of low operating time. The danger with these components is overgreasing, which forces open seals and allows moisture into the bearing grease cavities, causing premature corrosion and bearing failure.
Technicians also should actuate and test the transfer-switch mechanism at least monthly, and they should make sure the contacts are bright and smooth. If they are dull or oxidized, technicians can polish them to improve contact so good current flow occurs without arcing at the contacts when they close.
The battery requires the same visual inspection as other batteries — a frequent voltage and specific-gravity check to ensure the battery is fully charged.
The charger is usually an integral part of the emergency system and has automatic on-off controls. When the charge decreases to the preset level, the charger kicks on and brings the battery to full charge, then shuts off.
Even though charging is automatic, technicians should actuate the charging system at least once a month to ensure it works properly and at the right time to keep the battery sufficiently charged.

For point of note, the most common generator sets such as Mikano, FG Wilson, Jubaili, Marapco, Shark, Demba etc all have same engine which is Perkins engine. That implies that they uses same engine parts. Their only different is the name printed on the soundproof. This how that comes to possibility. The named generator brands don't manufacture generator, they only obtain the license or go into trade deal to assemble the parts which they import from Perkins in UK. Perkins Engines are manufacture in UK not Nigeria. So, these companies only construct the soundproof that houses the Perkins engines.

In simple language, Mikano 20 kvA has same engine has 20 kvA FG Wilson, Marapco and the rest.

The only difference of note is the Electrical component of the generator. A generator is divided into mechanical and electrical components. So, the electrical component that has the alternator differs from brand to brand. But, hardly do they have fault once they are well protected from water intrusion.

Mantrac generator are manufacture and assembled by CAT ie caterpillar. Mantrac carries caterpillars engine and quite different from Perkins.

Cummins generator are manufacture in USA. Mahindra are manufacture in India.

Let talk about some technical issues again. Today we shall talk about Engine overheating or too hot and its causes.

Engine Operates Too Hot or Overheats When Loaded and Coolant is Known to be at the Proper Level.

1. An altered horsepower rating of an engine or new engine installation which exceeds the
original design of the cooling system.
2. Clogged radiator air passages.
3. Damaged radiator core fins.
4. Heat exchanger element which contains heavy lime and scale deposits.
5. Thermostat not opening fully.
6. Fan shrouding missing, damaged, or improperly positioned with respect to the fan.
7. Re-circulation baffles on the sides of the radiator missing or damaged.
8. Fan drive belts slip: Impeller slips on the water pump shaft.
9. Clogged coolant passages, radiator, and engine.
10. Faulty automatic radiator shutters: Shutters only open partially or open too late.
11. Faulty thermatic or modulated fan drive: Fan engages too late or operates too slowly.
12. Faulty variable pitch fan: Fan operates with the blades at an insufficient pitch.

I will strongly advise my wonderful followers to strictly take their generator maintenance and servicing very serious. I went to overhaul a client 100kvA generator today. Guess what I discovered, the general was manufactured in 2013, he bought it 2014 and its got knocked 2017. Imagine how much he spent to overhaul it. Pls, generator parts are very very expensive just as the sales price likewise the maintenance labour cost.

But, could you believe it that mere simple daily and routine check can avert this unnecessary cost. What are the simple daily and routine check ?

1. Check the water level in the radiator
2. Check the oil level and use the right grade. If the oil is burnt, change immediately.
3. Check the load you put on it. Avoid over load.

No Q 1 n 2 is key to its durability no matter how good your brand his.

What is your take on a new 30 kva Hyundai Diesel generator that cost 2.8 million naira as again 20kva FG Wilson or Mikano generator that cost almost 3.5 million? People say Hyundai have no readily available parts in Nigeria but I don't believe that because having Hyundai generators for sale in Nigeria means parts should be available too.

There are tens of generator brands in Nigeria. But, I can categorically tell you that some of them don't have their parts scattered all over Nigeria, some don't even have. The importers just import them brand new and when they have faults,Its becomes difficult to get d parts and even competent mechanics. while for some, the parts are available but scarce like wise their maintenance technician. This is d category Hyundai, LP, Demco etc fall into. But, for some brand like Perkins and Mantrac, you can get their parts in many locations in Nigeria and also their maintenance technician.

Mantrac and Perkins products are expensive but are reliable and durable and they are more expensive as u rightly said but the parts are available and affordable compare to others.

I really want the followers of this thread and those who are interested in buying a diesel generator to understand that when you call to know the price of a particular generator. Pls, do understand that am given you the best price for the best grade of generator.

This is how it works, just like the difference between a tokunbo (imported) car and the one placed beside the road side with a gallon is placed on top. You will agree with me that they are not of same grade and price,ok. So also, these diesel generators are of different grade. There are some that have worked for only few running hours i.e the first buyer have used them for only few period of time, they are clean, better sound, mechanically and electrically strong, while there are some that have huge running hour i.e they have been used by the first buyer for a very long period of time? You will agree with me that, these same product can't come with same price. A 20kvA generator of less than 2000 running hours will be more expensive than same with 10000 or more running hours.

Brand is another thing that determine the price again. For instance a Perkins, MANTRAC (CAT), LP, mahindra etc don't have same price. One cost past d other.

So, pls have this at d back of your mind when you call and I have always give my customers the best deal.
