Politics / Re: 8 Reasons Why Nigeria Is A Shithole And We Cannot Keep Denying Our Problems by DonConte: 1:27pm On Jan 14, 2018
Until we learn to look inwards, face our issues and stop living in denial
Politics / 8 Reasons Why Nigeria Is A Shithole And We Cannot Keep Denying Our Problems by DonConte: 4:18pm On Jan 12, 2018
Nigerians woke to what some call 'a provocative statement' attributed to the US President Donald J. Trump that some African countries are shit holes. ANd guess what? Nigerians took the matter like gala on their heads. I imagine if Nigeria wasn't a shithole (not like the crazy Trump mentioned our dear country's name) why would we be so bothered and frothing at the mouth?

Nigerians, I am one of course, have a propensity to denying the existence of rot and decay in our system and would rather clutch at 'hope' and 'prayers' to sort things out for us. Take the example of someone who is at the end of an ATM line and when asked by a newcomer if she was the last in line uttered with all manner of conviction, 'I can never be the last in Jesus' name!'

So the question, forget the messenger Trump and let's for once focus on hard hitting reality, is Nigeria a Shithole?

What is a Shithole?

An extremely dirty, shabby and unpleasant place.

Can you truthfully beat your chest and say this isn't a shithole? That isn't a shabby country, very unpleasant and dirty?

Cast aside your optimist glasses for once and look at hard, cold facts.

1. Security.

Almost everything in Nigeria conspires to kill you! If you are in the Southeast and Middlebelt especially it could be a horde of manic Herdsmen who descend on your locality in the dead of the night to maim WITHOUT THE STATE APPARATUS BRINGING ANYBODY TO ANSWER!!

If you are young man hustling to make a living one day the Police (including their rogue SARS unit) will show you why you are in a jungle

If you are one of the numerous 'non-important citizens' kidnapped just pray your immediate family can sort things out. Just the other day a lady kidnapped in Rivers and no agency of the state (Police, DSS, State government etc) did a thing.

If you are in some parts of the North just pray you don't walk into a Boko Haram attack

Where do I stop on security? In Nigeria you can practically get shot dead and nothing happens. 70 people can get killed and what do we get? People arguing on social media while government does nothing.

2. Your Leaders Shit on You!!

A Shithole indeed!! WHere the people'e elected and even appointed leaders shit so heavily on them that the people who don't hail the shitting would receive even more ferocious deposit of Faeces on their faces.

A senator collects hundreds of millions for constituency projects and distributes bags of rice to a few citizens. No questions asked. Shit on his People!

A Governor owes his workers for months, uses scarce money to subsidise travellers to Jerusalem and Saud Arabia on religious pilgrimages, directs that attendance be strictly marked for the owed civil servants. More Shit on the People!

A Governor owes workers and pensioners, spends hundreds of millions on useless statues (that will never impact on his people's well being), forces workers to sing his praises, bans the affordable means of transportation his capital has. Yet More Shit on The People!!

The President gives no damn about thousands of people killed, attends to only irrelevancies like commending the winner of his 2017 message card design competition (while scores of dead people killed by gunmen are being buried), his aides insult the people's intelligence with statements like 'During the previous government X amount of people were killed by herdsmen' - Nothing happens. At most the people curse themselves over their moronic leader. More damning shit on the People!!

Let me stop here

3. A Dead Civil Service

Try getting something as ordinary as a transcript from your school or getting a certain urgent application through a state agency or ministry. You will weep at the huge amount of laziness, I don't care attitude and absolute disgrace of service. The woman (who by the way is someone's mother who when her next birthday comes will be extolled by her children as the epitome of a graceful and hardworking woman) will sit and either tell you to come tomorrow (while apparently engaged in gossip) or purposely keep you waiting for as long as possible. Maybe to break you or what?

Ministries and Agencies where service is a lost word. The Oga of the Agency is a demi-god (eg Tunde Fowler and the likes), workers either don't know shit or lack motivation to do shit. More shit on the People, This one is a case of people shitting on each other while their leaders look

4. The Lowest Expectation from Their Political Leaders

Nigeria must rank as the country with the lowest expectation from their political leaders. A bowl of groundnut served and the people say 'Ahem this governor is working!'

The governor paints a few roads, commissions Agberos to chase after vehicles in the name of Traffic management (like we are in a desert zoo) - Ahem! He is an action governor!

A Governor who has tens of billions of revenue does one major road cleanup, does a few street roads, converts thugs to uniform wearing harrassment officials, meanwhile his state as big economically as it is does not provide water to its citizens, citizens guard their streets through neighbourhood watches and vigilantes, the state has the most chaotic transportation system on earth, nobody knows where the billions actually go. More torrential shit on the people!!

5. Accountability

No political leader is accountable!

The President stays almost half a year in a foreign land burning hard currency in medical fees, aircraft parking charges, estacodes for countless officials etc and no damn is given. Talk nah! No explanation given, the people deserve the shit. They take it down their throat and actually love it. They are told by those who eat at the table that they deserve no such explanation. Unimaginable shit!!

A Governor collects the 'hugest' amount of internally generated revenue but who are the people to get access to the books of the state on how the billions are spent. Still he and his people will level the shanties, sell land to the highest bidder, collect tolls and levies. And the people will hail the New Lagos. Meanwhile even the best neighbourhoods are shitholes with no planning cos the government just collects land payments and does absolutely nothing, not even mapping the new areas to give organisation before development starts not to talk of providing amenities. Citizens must eat the shit and provide everything for themselves and still pay the levies. Monumental Shit!!

A Local Government Chairman practically stays away from his office and only shows up at month end to collect and disburse allocation. Afterwards he heads back to the city (why do we even call these things we live in cities?) to wait till another month. Zero Bleep given. More shit for the populace.

6. Standard of Living

Except you hustle hard to become part of the very few middle class and rich your standard of living is likely worse than that of a pet in the advanced world. Yes, don't feel hurt!!

Some of us think we earn a decent living when a medical emergency alone will wipe out the little money you think you have.

We drink the dirtiest water, bathe the dirtiest water. Posh areas have no proper drainage. What is the quality of the average school? What recreational opportunities are in most towns aside a Shoprite Mall and a few Mr Biggs and beer parlours? We drive our SUVs in dirt poor, pot hole ridden roads and curse each other on the quality of roads our states have compared to the other.

Shitty living while in denial, that's what we have here. Thousands dying away slowly in noise and traffic in the most populous town. And that reminds me it is most populous because all other states have shitty infrastructure, dead economies and no hope for their graduates to get decent jobs. That leads me to the next reason.

7. A Sickening Quality of Infrastructure

I laugh when some 'happy go lucky fellows' post pictures of Lagos and Abuja and argue their heads off on how Nigeria is better than other African countries.

Bros and Sisters we live in a fucking shithole!!

Power? I don't even have the strength! For over a week no light in my residence in Lagos and I'm typing this from Enugu no fucking light as well!!
Roads? Hell No! Death traps all over
Rail? We fight over who did this tiny bit of rail from Kaduna to X location. Rickety trains (by world standard) and no national coordinated train system running
Alternate Transports like the Subway, - Zilch, Nada, Zero, Non-existent
Organised Transport System in our 'Cities' (I refuse to call them cities)? - The closest we have are the Keke Drivers Association and NURTW existing in most towns
Health? - I laugh in shitty language. Pray you don't have a real medical situation (I am not talking of Malaria). That's when all of you licking the asses of your governors and your dumb President will understand how shitty your country is.

8. Education

Aha How could I forget this one? Just some lists will do. No explanations.

a) Only about 20 students pass school exams in a whole state. Shitty
b) Cutoff marks reduced further for University entrant exams to help shitty students pass instead of fixing the quality of secondary education
c) Lecturers' harass students sexually with impetus and nothing happens across the Federation
d) Thousands of dilapidated schools scattered all over. Who has ever asked governors for their score card on education. Shitty COuntry!
e) Zero respect for their leaders of tomorrow
f) Educational curriculum has never been upgraded/reviewed in over a decade resulting in teaching pupils and students archaic versions of the Periodic Table and other phased out science phenomena
g) Absolute absence of a National Technical Education Plan. The GTCs of old are dead and living ghosts.
h) Universities and Colleges are mere glorified secondary schools with tin pot Vice Chancellors and Rectors as demi-gods out to make money and nothing more
i) Majority of lecturers empty and with no professional basis to be lecturing students yet they are there because no jobs. Many of them didn't even want to teach.
j) Absolute shambles when it comes to history. We learn the histories of other countries yet deny our own children the lessons of our history in a shallow brained attempt at integration and unity.

Where do I stop?

Either decide today to get involved in your country's electoral process and vow to not allow this shittyness continue by exercising all the right you have or You decide to stick with scrolling through instagram and other social media everyday and feigning ignorance of how bleeped up your country is.

Take it upon yourself; Educate others, Get your PVC, Start demanding more from your leaders and for God's sake fucking stop fighting over the useless leaders you have.

Nigeria is a Shithole! You can accept this fact and start to join forces to liberate your country or You can hide like the Ostrich and live in 'Patriotic Denial'

NB: Forgive any spelling or grammar errors. I am not in the mood to edit myself!!

Investment / Is Morgan Capital No Longer Functional? by DonConte: 12:52pm On Dec 28, 2017
Been interested in starting investing in the stock market and came across an earlier post on NL praising Morgan Capital's itrader platform as a real time online stock trading platform. I also am considering Meritrade by Meristem Securities. Clearly I am more comfortable using an online real time platform to invest and manage my stock trading as I abhor the offline processes.

But checking out Morgan Capital I see they were suspended late 2016 by the NSE and then their website isn't opening. Does anyone per chance know if they are still active?

And can anyone who uses Meritrade platform by Meristem give some insights on how good or bad the platform is? Maybe also suggest any other good online stock trading platform one can use.

Thanks in anticipation
