A Lagos Federal High Court has remanded a man, Paul Jibrin Oweleke, after the Department of State Services (DSS) accused him of using social media to call for the military overthrow of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. Oweleke was arraigned before Justice Akintoye Aluko on a two-count charge linked to alleged cybercrime offences. According to the DSS, he used his online platform, “Oweleke TV,” to publish messages urging the military to remove the President and emulate recent military takeovers seen elsewhere in West Africa.

The defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutors asked the court to remand him pending trial, while his lawyer informed the court that a bail application had already been filed. The court adjourned the matter until June 16 for the hearing of the bail application and ordered that Oweleke remain in custody in the meantime.
Court documents allege that the broadcasts were capable of inciting public disorder, promoting disaffection against the government, and undermining constitutional rule. The charges were brought under provisions of Nigeria’s Cybercrimes Act, as amended.
