PoliticsBAYELSA ELECTION: Do Not Abandon PDP, Gov. Dickson Begs Bayelsans by dvdokey(op): 2:00pm On Nov 11, 2019
Gov. Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa has urged the people of Bayelsa to keep faith with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as they go to the polls on Nov. 16 to elect his successor.

Dickson, who made the call in a radio broadcast, on Sunday night, monitored by Nigeria News Agency in Yenagoa, noted that voting against the PDP would amount to betrayal of trust to PDP faithful nationwide.

He said that the faithful of the party who supported former President Goodluck Jonathan to become President would be disappointed if the people of Bayelsa dumped PDP for the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

He advised the people to make informed choices between Sen. Douye Diri of the PDP and Chief David Lyon of the APC haven heard the candidates sell their plans as they canvassed for votes in a peaceful atmosphere.

“I advise Bayelsa people in their own interest to keep faith with PDP; the followers of PDP across the country who made sacrifices and supported one of our own to become President will feel disappointed if we abandon PDP.

“It is on record that some of them were attacked for supporting former President Goodluck Jonathan and so it is only reasonable that we remain with PDP,” Dickson said.

On the purported rift with Jonathan over the choice of the PDP governorship candidate, Dickson blamed ‘political jobbers’ for making misleading comments and misrepresenting his actions.

Dickson said that those who claimed to be working for Jonathan did not mean well for the former President.

PoliticsYOUTH EMPOWERMENT: Rep. Committee Pledges To Make Difference by dvdokey(op): 1:19pm On Nov 07, 2019
Hon. Adeyemi Adaramadu, Chairman, House Committee on Youth Development, says the 9th National Assembly is dedicated to making a difference in youth empowerment and development rather than the usual stereotype of complacency.

Adaramadu made the pledge in an exclusive interview with the Nigeria News Agency at the National Assembly complex in Abuja.

“This 9th assembly that we are entrusted with by the grace of God and again by the benevolence of the Honourable Speaker, right Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila to be in the committee of youth development, we want to make a difference.

“ We want to make sure that it is not going to be the stereotype that we are just in the office, I am the chairman, there is a deputy chairman, there are members, they just come to meetings, and we eat groundnuts and then drink coke and just deliberate like that and go.

“ No, no, no, we want to go out to the offices, we want to make sure that all those centres whereby the goodies are for the youth of Nigeria, we tap into, so we can get across to them and bring those deliverables out for the youth of Nigeria to benefit from them.

“We are going to do away with this era of talking things for youth of Nigeria, mouthing it, saying yes the youth constitute between 60 and 65 per cent of the population of Nigeria, fine.

“ But what are we doing to make sure that that 60 or 65 per cent we put them together and make them useful even to the populace, even to the Nation and even to themselves,“. (NAN)

PoliticsNational Sports Festival: Edo Getting Ready To Host The Nation by dvdokey(op): 10:47pm On Nov 06, 2019
On Dec. 16, 2018, at the closing ceremony of the 19th National Sports Festival (NSF), “Abuja 2018,’’ Edo was announced as the host of the 20th edition of the biennial sports festival.

Solomon Dalung, the then Minister of Youth and Sports Development, said the state was chosen after careful assessment of its bid.

The minister said Edo beat Delta, Imo and Cross River states to win the hosting right.

Gov. Godwin Obaseki of Edo, who was present at the occasion, assured that the state would live up to expectation.

“We accept this challenge and will be ready to host the whole of Nigeria as expected in Benin in 2020,” Obaseki said.

Obaseki went down the memory lane to explain that the then Bendel, now Edo and Delta states, won the NSF hosting right in 1981, while Edo played host to the rest of Nigeria in 2002.

The Ministry was careful in granting Edo the hosting right to avoid the circumstances that led to not holding the festival for six years.

At the closing ceremony of the 18th NSF in Lagos in 2012, Cross River was announced the host of the 19th NSF.

The state could not put the necessary infrastructure in place for the festival to hold in 2014.

As a result of failure from the Cross River Government the hosting right was withdrawn, while the 19th NSF eventually held in Abuja in 2018.

To avoid delay, the Edo Government hit the ground running immediately the state won the hosting right.

The main venue, Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, has been undergoing reconstruction in the past one year, and is almost 95 per cent completed.

Femi James, the site engineer of Peculiar Ultimate Consult, said the stadium would be one of the best in the county when completed.

According to James, the main bowl of the stadium will boast of required FIFA facilities such as surveillance monitor and standard studio that will make it easy to relay live matches.

“As you can see, a lot have been achieved; while various fittings are currently being installed with others completed, installation of seats is also being completed.

“This stadium which is about the best in the country will be fitted with surveillance monitor 5km radius and also studio facilities.

“It will be about the only stadium in the country with these facilities, the stadium will only be compared to that in Uyo and Abuja when completed.

“As for the tracks, we are done with the ground work and only awaits the arrival of the facility from Germany which payments have been made,” he declared.

James said that besides the tracks, payments have been made for the flood lights and the score board.

“We have already installed lights inside all the covered stands and also installed the shadow casting lights for the turf; we are only awaiting the arrival of the flood lights and the score board for installation.”

The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, who recently undertook a tour of the stadium, commended the governor on his administration’s commitment to deepen sports development by investing in the reconstruction of the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and other sporting facilities in the state.

He said that based on what is on ground; the state was prepared to host the 2020 NSF.

Obaseki, on his part, said the state was ready to host the NSF.

“I am impressed with the total rebuilding of the stadium to a 21st century model edifice. We have built the pitch; the tracks are to be replaced. The swimming pool, long tennis, and indoor courts are all wearing new looks.”

Mr Philip Shaibu, Edo Deputy Governor and Chairman, 2020 NSF Local Organising Committee (LOC), assured that all sporting venues and facilities will be ready by Dec. 31, 2019.

Shaibu reinstated that in accordance with rules of such big sporting tournaments; the mascot and theme song for the games have already been unveiled with 100 per cent local content.

The mascot was named “Etin,” which in Benin dialect means, strength and designed by Anthony Ifemeje.

He restated that the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, the main venue of the festival and other complementary venues were almost completed.

Shaibu said that apart from the National Stadium, Abuja, Edo will be the first state to have a double game event for squash, while the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, now has an Assisted Video Recorder (AVR) facility ready for use.

He said that all the 12 sub-committees were working round the clock to ensure hitch-free festival.

He said that the Main Organising Committee (MOC), would soon commence training of desk officers that would handle the accreditation of athletes and officials.

The deputy governor said the services of between 2,000 to 3,000 volunteers would be needed to ensure smooth management of the games.

He said the volunteers would be recruited through advertisement to be placed on the games portal to make for the smooth running of the games tagged, `Return of the Native.’

“ Edo was on recess for 11-12 years, which made Nigeria to lose its potential. “

“We are ready to host other 35 states and Abuja in the Return of the Native.

“ Edo is ready to take its pride of place in sports,” Shaibu said.

Mr Mike Itemuagbon, the Chairman, Marketing Sub-Committee, said no fewer than 8, 500 athletes are expected to participate in the 20th edition of the NSF, which will hold from March 22 to April 1, 2020.

The athletes will compete for 3,000 medals from 33 sports in 22 venues.

Itemuagbon called for synergy between the publicity and the marketing committees, and urged the publicity committee to use various platforms to sell the festival to the world.

“Nothing will be left to chance in a bid to ensure the best organised NSF in the country, but then, we must be up and doing in our various assigned responsibilities.

“We must understand that the media and marketing drive sport, so we must use our various platforms to propagate the Edo2020 event,” Itemuagbon said.

In order to ensure free movement of athletes and officials to competition venues, Gov. Obaseki said that plans had been concluded to purchase over 100 new buses, which will be added to the Edo City Transport Service (ECTS) fleet.

According to the governor, the state is already finalising talks with relevant stakeholders to supply the vehicles.

All hands should be on deck to enable Edo deliver on its promise of organising a world-class National Sports Festival. (NAN)

PoliticsNUJ CERTIFICATE SCANDAL: Isiguzo Did Not Go To School-suspended Officers Insist by dvdokey(op): 5:06pm On Nov 05, 2019
Immediate past National President of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Waheed Odusile and other officers purportedly suspended by the National Executive Council, NEC, has described their suspension as illegal and of no effect.

The officers through their lawyer O.D Okeke esq have also given the NUJ 21 days to reverse the purported indefinite suspension and publish it in two national dailies.

Failing to do so, “we shall not hesitate to invoke our client’s right under Section 36 (1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended) by having recourse to available but avoidable litigation in the law court.”

The lawyer warned that his clients cannot be intimidated or cowed by any unconstitutional or illegal conduct by Mr. Chris Isiguzo through NUJ invariably being where his powers starts and ends.

“Our Clients shall lawfully, legitimately and constitutionally continue to pursue the criminal act of Certificate Forgery by NUJ President Chris Isiguzo no matter whatever antic he employs.

“We shall not hesitate to bring the full weight of the law against any person or group of persons who attempts to harass, intimidate or criminally interferes with our clients in the performance of their elected duty.”

In a letter dated 01-11-2019 and addressed to the NUJ National Secretary Barr. Okeke noted that the purported suspension is a clear and flagrant violation criminal breach of Articles 7 and 5 (B) of NUJ Constitution.

The letter stated that the affected officers were never served any notice of allegation against them or giving any opportunity to be heard.

He expressed shock that an allegation grievous as certificate forgery against the embattled President Mr. Chris Isiguzo was brought to the notice of NEC, yet it chose to turn blind eye by failing to activate Article 7 and investigate the veracity of the certificate allegations.

“But NEC were so swift to purportedly suspend…is this not a clear case of double standard, different strokes for different members? The letter said it is against natural justice (fair hearing) to indict a person for any real, known or imaginary allegation without giving such a person opportunity to be heard.

“It amounts to abuse of office and fundamental breach of the NUJ constitution by employing selective or different standards in handling the affairs of members.

“The purported suspension is a punishment unknown to the constitution of NUJ and therefore ultra vires, unconstitutional and of no effect, null and void. No one can place something on nothing and expect it to stand.

“The NUJ constitution did not provide for State of the Nation to be discussed by NEC. Therefore any decision any resolution purportedly reached by NUJ during NEC meetings under State of the Nation amounts to usurpation of the powers of National Delegates Conference, the Supreme authority, of the union. NB: “without prejudice to Article 4(a)–(c) above, there shall be a National Conference at least once in every two years, during which the state of the union will be discussed.”

“The criminal silence on the issue of certificate forgery against the incumbent NUJ President Mr. Chris Isiguzo will continue to hunt NUJ by dragging it’s name, image, and reputation into public ridicule and Odium.”

“I wish to remind all of you seated in this complex that under my watch, it will no longer be business as usual; members of the committee will soon be initiating bills that will take care of the activities of NGOs and CSOs in Enugu State.

“I strongly believe that some of the challenges you are having in the field will be accommodated in it.

HealthCancer Awareness: Men Are Not Exempted From Breast Cancer Screening – Oncologist by dvdokey(op): 4:12pm On Oct 13, 2019
Dr Abisoye Abayomi, an Oncologist based in Lagos, on Sunday said that men were not exempted from screening for breast cancer.

Abayomi disclosed this in an interview with Nigeria News Agency in Abuja.

The Oncologist said that even though men do not develop milk-producing breasts, their breast cells and tissues could still develop cancer.

“Breast Cancer in Men is real. Many people don’t know that men can get breast cancer because they don’t think of man as having breasts.

“Admittedly, the occurrence of breast cancer in male subjects is quite rare with a 1 in 1,000 ratio compared to the 1 in 8 in women.

“Men who are afflicted with this type of cancer are less likely to survive the disease than women,” he said.

Abayomi said that currently, knowledge on the causes of breast cancer was not sufficient; therefore, early detection of the disease remained the cornerstone of breast cancer control.

“When breast cancer is detected early, and if adequate diagnosis and treatment are available, there is a good chance that breast cancer can be cured.

“If detected late, however, curative treatment is often no longer an option; in such cases, palliative care to relieve the suffering of patients and their families is needed.’’

He urged Nigerians not to be scared to get screened, stating that it was the cheapest way to identify and manage cancer.

According to Abayomi, breast screening process takes just 20 minutes and that can help to change one’s lifestyle for the better.

The Oncologist said that if anyone was concerned about developing breast cancer, they might be wondering if there were steps they could take to help prevent the disease.

He said that while risk factors like genetics and age could not be avoided, measures could be taken to lower risk of breast cancer, mainly by staying healthy.

Quoting Hippocrates of 400 BC, “Let thy food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’’, Abayomi said: “and still so relevant today; prevention is key.’’

NAN reports that breast cancer is one of the most common types of cancer in women worldwide, both in developed and developing countries.

In low and middle-income countries, the incidence has continued to rise steadily due to increase in life expectancy and urbanisation, among other factors.

Mr Abu Ejoor, BEDC Executive Director, Commercial, made the disclosure on Saturday in Akure at the Media Launch of Ondo State Meter Asset Provider (MAP) Scheme.

Nigeria News Agency reports that the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission(NERC) recently introduced MAP to bridge the metering gap in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

The main objective of MAP regulations by NERC is to encourage the development of independent and competitive meter services,.

It is also to eliminate estimated billing, close the metering gap through accelerated meter roll out and enhance revenue assurance in NESI.

Ejoor said that a monthly average of about 10, 000 meters would be installed at peak level, after the initial take off and build up period.

He said that metering would take off from four locations in Akure North and Akure South Local Government areas of the state.

“In taking off, MAP in BEDC will have up to three months of building up on the meter roll out, during which the MAP parties will be understanding the terrain and the customers understanding the requirements.

“This may initially make the metering process appear slow.

“However, the roll out will eventually pick up with the expected monthly run rate of 10, 000 meters and a total of at least 114,740 meters within the next two years,” he said.

Ejoor, who listed Igbatoro, Ijapo, Alagbaka and Ilesha Road, said that FLT Energy Systems Ltd and Sabrud Consortium Nigeria Ltd had been chosen as the MAPs to undertake meter installation in the state.

He said that the MAP parties would carry out a street by street enumeration of customers in the locations as a prerequisite for metering.

According to him, customers will be required to complete the customer data and survey form, known as “Know Your Customers ” which will be available online on BEDC website.

He said that after customers had been confirmed to have been enumerated, they would obtain and fill the meter application form.

According to him, after that approved electrical officials will access customers’ premises to ensure they are properly wired in readiness for metering.

“Once a customer’s premises is cleared as ready, such customer will be advised on how to pay for the meter; whether single phase or 3 phase, the price of which are N38, 350 and N70, 350 respectively.

“We advise customers not to give cash to either MAP or BEDC staff and should pay to only bank accounts, designated by the MAPS.

“Our customers are enjoined to cooperate with the enumerators going round the various locations in the state, by responding promptly to requests for completion of enumeration form.

“Part of the requirements are a passport photograph, a utility bill for postpaid customers and vending slip for prepaid customers, telephone numbers and email address.

“This is also a prerequisite for metering as the customers’ data need to be captured for meters to be given out. Those who are not yet BEDC customers will also be enrolled. ”
