Chelsea outstrips Man Utd, Liverpool in C/League earnings

Chelsea have outstripped Manchester United and Liverpool in Champions League earnings in recent years, it has been revealed.

According to a study produced by Italian sports business consultancy StageUp, Chelsea have earned more than any club in Europe from the competition between 2005 and 2008. The club has earned around 184m euros of the 3bn euros that UEFA has distributed to 70 clubs.

Manchester United and Arsenal follow Chelsea as the second and third biggest earners from the competition, while Liverpool, who have received 131m euros, are fifth. The fourth-placed club, the only one to split the English sides, is Lyon, boosted by being the only consistent French performers in the league.

Abramovich collapses on Mount Kilimanjaro attempt

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich was forced to abandon an attempt to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro.

The 43-year-old was carried to safety after experiencing breathing problems during a failed attempt to ascend the mountain in Tanzania last week.

He had invited a group of six friends to scale the 19,330ft summit, but the expedition had to be cancelled at 15,100ft.

Abramovich's group tackled the western breach, which is the most difficult approach.

The party, who flew in on the oligarch’s private Boeing 767, took with them 113 porters, the Sunday Times reported.

It was reported that Guus Hiddink, Chelsea’s interim manager last season, was among the group.

Mr Abramovich succumbed to what appeared to have been symptoms of altitude sickness and needed medical attention.

Pascal Shelutete, a spokesman for the Tanzania National Parks Authority, told the newspaper: "We were not given a reason for his failure to reach the peak, but there are reports from his team that he developed some breathing problems."
