A new heroine is flying alongside Wonder Woman and Superman to pull Puerto Rico through hurricane Maria’s aftermath. Her name is La Borinqueña.

She soars through the air, performing feats of superhuman strength — clad in a costume modeled after Puerto Rico’s revolutionary flag.

Come May, she’ll team up with several DC comic superheroes in a special anthology to help the battered island. And you can help her on the mission.
Origin story

“We are living in an era right now that is really celebrating superhero culture and storytelling but none of these characters are connected to real world issues,” said creator Edgardo Miranda-Rodriguez.

The character was born in 2016 when Puerto Rico was in the midst of its catastrophic debt crisis.

“I created La Borinqueña because the debt crisis was not going to be paid,” Miranda-Rodriguez told CNN.

“I thought to myself, ‘If I create a superhero, maybe I can talk about what’s happening to Puerto Rico through this character.'”

The hurricane. Two weeks after Maria blew ashore, the artist sat at a Comic Con table in New York signing the first volume of his La Borinqueña comic book.

He looked up to see the co-publisher of DC Comics, Dan Didio, thumbing through his book, enjoying his work.

“He literally waited 20 minutes to get to me at my table. He was wearing his Puerto Rican baseball league hat.”

“At that moment, I felt compelled to ask him, ‘What are you going to do for Puerto Rico? Can we do something together to help Puerto Rico?’ He said, ‘Put together a proposal.'”

Miranda-Rodriquez knew this was a job for La Borinqueña. The artist assembled dozens of Latino illustrators and writers.

The National Bureau of Statistics, NBS in its latest report has revealed how states across Nigeria are performing in terms of internally generated revenue, IGR. NBS noted that the total IGR generated by states across the country in 2017 was N931.23bn, a figure higher than the amount generated in 2016 by N100.04bn, an increase of 12.03%. At the end of second half of 2017 (H2 2017), total revenue generated by states had already hit N432.65bn, a figure higher than that generated in first half of the year (H1 2017), which was N409.09bn.

The report also indicated that five states (Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Osun and Taraba) recorded a decline in the amount they generated internally in 2017 compared to the previous year, while the remaining 31 states recorded an increase in their IGR when compared to 2016.

Also, the report showed that net FAAC allocation in year 2017 is N1.73 trillion while the total revenue available to the states is put at N2.67 trillion.

As at the end of 2017, Nigeria’s foreign debt stands at $19.9bn while domestic debt hits N3.35 trillion.
