Alaghodaro Summit: Obaseki Showcases Reforms-Driven Growth, People-Oriented Governance

The Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, on Monday at the 2018 Alaghodaro Summit taking place in the state capital, Benin City, said the steady progress which his administration has recorded in all sectors of the state in the last two years was spurred by time-tested reforms and people-centred governance.

Obaseki made the submission before an array of personalities in government, private sector players, foreign investors, traditional rulers, thought and community leaders, owners of micro, small and medium businesses as well as other stakeholders.

According to the governor, the state has witnessed tremendous progress in the last two years of his administration, in the areas of infrastructure, quality education and job creation, with a policy strategy linking job seekers to trainings and employment opportunities, which have culminated in the creation of 77,200 jobs.

The governor said: "Alaghodaro summit was designed to lay a solid foundation for the future of the state. Through the strategic summit, we have been able to lay out our plans for the Edo people and strategically showcase our potential to the world as guide to governance in the state. We understand that for there to be prosperity, peace and inclusive growth; reforms are imperative."

Obaseki said his government’s focus on the wellbeing of the Edo people and residents informed the choice of this year’s summit theme: ‘Edo of our dream: Investing in our people’.

He explained that the investment in the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) programme has produced over 7, 000 digital teachers with impressive learning outcomes in public primary schools across the state.

"Primary school pupils can now read in our public schools. I got this result first hand after an interaction with a parent. A mother came to me, thanking me for what we have done in the schools. She said her six-year-old child can not only read, but also always eager to go to school and have his name on the character board,” he said.

Chairman of the 2018 Alaghodaro Summit, Asue Ighodalo, in his remark, said the summit would generate ideas for the Obaseki-led administration to deepen the gains it has recorded in critical sectors such as health, education and job creation as well as in allied areas.

…Gov says Golf has helped him address 'ball of governance'

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said that the state government will be expanding her real estate stock in partnership with Mixta Nigeria, through the development of a 72-hectare estate, 50-hectare of which will be a golfing estate.

The governor, who made the remark at the Award Night of the Governor’s Cup Golf Tournament held at the Benin Club Golf section, on Saturday, restated his administration’s commitment to sports development in the state.

He noted that more attention would be paid to the state's sports sector to sustain the recent strides in various games.

At the award ceremony, Obaseki disclosed that the game of golf has helped him tremendously in focusing on the ‘ball of governance’ in the last two years, and that the evidence of good governance is there for all to see.

Other dignitaries at the event were Edo State First Lady, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki; the Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu; the Chief of Staff, Chief Taiwo Akerele, and the captain of the golf section of the Benin Club, Osagie Nehikhare.

On the development of the estate in partnership with Mixta Nigeria, the governor said: "We are partnering with the company for the Emotan Gardens on Sokponba Road. We want to build another estate on a 72-hectare land. About 50-hectare of the estate will be for golfing.”

He further revealed plans to have the new golfing estate ready by 2022.

Commenting on why his administration is committing immense resources and time to sports, the governor stressed that his personal experience in golf has helped him in the area of governance.

“When you play the game of golf, you need to focus on the ball, ignoring all forms of distractions. It has helped me tremendously in politics and governance. Golf is a game of life. I have learnt to take lessons from playing the game to governance," he said.

According to him, while playing the game, a competitor can throw a remark that could derail one's focus. He stressed that "focus must be kept and political distractions must be ignored."

He added that the focus of his administration has resulted in the strides that have been made in sports with Bendel Insurance gaining promotion to the premier league after many years in relegation.

"At the beginning of this administration, I promised that we would build 20 stadia across the state to help in youth development. The public can see what we have done with the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium. When we are done, that arena will be able to host sports festivals and international matches.”

He restated his administration’s resolve to continue to back the annual Governor's Cup.

Governor of Plateau State, Simon Lalong; Edo State Deputy Governor, Philip Shaibu; his wife and other golfers received trophies in various categories of the tournament.

…to vote N250m for creative industry, as physically challenged artiste gets N10m

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said plans are in the works for a 30-hectare Television Village in Okhoro axis of Benin City, which will attract big-ticket investments from Nollywood, Nigeria’s booming movie industry.

The governor also said that the sum of N250 million will be allocated to boost the creative industry in the state's 2019 budget, noting that his administration is committed to creating room for youths to find expression in productive ventures in the state.

The governor disclosed this during the Youth Concert organised as part of activities marking his administration's second-anniversary celebration in Benin City, on Friday night.

He said his administration prioritises entertainment and creativity as a veritable tool for job creation for youths, adding, "We have been trying to fix roads, health care and education sectors over the past two years. We want to build an entertainment hub. We have a 30-hectare premises in the Okhoro axis of the state for this purpose and it will have investments from Nollywood.

"We want to give youths jobs and entertainment. There is hope for talented youths because we have artistes from the state, who are succeeding and making waves in the entertainment industry," Obaseki said.

The governor who was elated by the performance of local and international artistes at the concert, donated N10 million to a physically challenged artiste named 'Kasali' to enable him establish his record label.

"My administration will support talents. We want the world to know that there is ability in disability. The N10 million is to enable him establish his label and promote his music," the governor said.

He said a team would be assembled to properly organise the creative industry in the state, adding that the committee will be made up of the Commissioner for Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs as well as local artistes in the state.

He added that his administration was working to get an alternate source of power supply in the state to drive development, noting that steady power supply was needed to grow the economy, including the entertainment industry.

"Electricity has been our problem and we are solving it. We say No to Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), we will have our own electricity company in Edo before the celebration of my administration's third year anniversary," the governor assured.
