When the supreme court of the United States of America on June 26, 2015 made the declaration that same sex marriage is now legal, there were wild celebrations throughout the country as gay couples were seen kissing and making out in public. Though legally, it is now in practice, but religiously, it is still under debate as some schools of thought are going soft on their stand against it.
The Christian Faith's holy book- The Bible records in Genesis chapter 19 about the town of Sodom and Gomorrah and its perpetual sin of homosexuality which got to its peak when the locals were about to attack the messengers (angels) whom Lot played host to. Despite his offer of his two virgin daughters in exchange for the two men under his tent, it was met with stiff resistance. Biblical records tells that the men (angels) were sent to destroy the town due to its abominable acts, and Lot and his family were asked to leave the city for their safety and not to look back. The city was eventually razed down with fire.
Homosexuality, was widely practiced in the city and it gained public acceptance as it is gradually now. People are gradually coming out to declare their sexuality even as some who were married to the opposite sex have now gotten divorced in order to 'fit in' properly into their 'real life' which they have been hiding due to fear of societal scrutiny.
Several civil right groups have been in recent times campaigning for people to be allowed to choose their sexuality and whom to marry without fear of reproach and most recently, the campaigns have shifted grounds to allowing them to be able to adopt children.
The religious bodies - most especially the christian faith, whose holy book records the consequences of homosexuality and it being averse to God's will who created all things and beings in their kinds - male and female have actually not done enough as regards taking a stand against homosexuality. While some clergymen are preaching against it, others are going quite soft on them giving the reason to be that "as humans we should not judge".
A Calgary county cab man in Canada got suspended and may loose his licence because he was reported by two gay men whom he carried in his cab for calling their act 'disgusting' as they were making out at the back of his cab. This goes to show just how 'morally confused' the society is turning into in recent times.
The christian faith must do enough in discouraging this act; so do other religious faith if the trend will eventually die a natural death. If this cannot be achieved, if the religious bodies cannot or do not, we just have to pray and hope that sooner or later, destruction doesn't come to us.
Notwithstanding, if God doesn't eventually send down fire and brimstone on those practicing homosexuality, then a someone rightly said, "He owes the men of Sodom and Gomorrah an apology"
