If I recall, it was Gowon that seized the assets of the Catholic church in response to the Vatican supporting Biafra despite all the evil done by Biafrans on minority people.

The move to nationalise those assets like schools was to weaken the Catholic church's strong grip on Ibo populace.

Hundreds of millions were fretted away in the name of giveaway solely to the Catholic diocese in Anambra while other faith based institutions received nada.
