Isomers are the compounds that have the same molecular formula but differ from each other in physical or chemical properties. The phenomenon is known as isomerism. Since there isomers have the same molecular formula, the difference in their properties are due to different modes of combination or arrangements of atoms within the molecule.

The two main types of isomerism are:

1. Structural isomerism and

2. Stereoisomerism.

Structural isomerism:

Isomerism due to difference in the arrangement of atoms within the molecule, without any reference to space is called structural isomerism.
