Ferrari SF90 Spider: 100 kg heavier than the coupe, but with a rigid folding roof

Scuderia Ferrari has unveiled the first ever plug-in open-top hybrid supercar, the SF90 Spider. The technical stuffing is entirely borrowed from the sister coupe SF90 Stradale, but the design has more interesting features than it might seem at first glance.

The Ferrari SF90 Stradale coupe made its debut in the spring of last year, but due to the coronavirus crisis, deliveries to most countries have not yet begun. In fact, the coupe and spider will go on sale simultaneously in the coming months, while the prices for the coupe have long been known (in Europe – from 430 thousand euros), and the price tag for the Spider has not yet been announced.

Meanwhile, even with the expected mark-up, the Spider seems to be better than a coupe, if, of course, you want to have a recreational sports car, and not set records at the circuit. The dry weight of the SF90 Spider is 1670 kg versus 1570 kg for the SF90 Stradale – both figures include the optional Assetto Fiorano “lightweight” package. In the case of the Spider, it reduces weight by 21 kg and includes two-tone paintwork, increased use of carbon fiber in the body structure, titanium suspension elements, Multimatic racing shock absorbers and Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, which are optimal for driving on dry asphalt.

The SF90 Spider is equipped with a folding and very compact rigid aluminum top – when folded it takes only 100 liters, and when unfolded allows you to operate the machine in any weather conditions and not be afraid of, for example, sharp icicles falling. The folding-unfolding process takes only 14 seconds and is fully automated. The rear window is also electrified and eliminates unwanted air turbulence in the cabin when driving with the top down. The convertible top is expertly integrated into the active aerodynamic body and does not spoil its striking design. At the beginning of last year, the German manufacturer announced that the new generation SUV will become fully electric, but not all brand fans took this news with a bang. As a result, in October 2019, it became known that the manufacturer decided to temporarily leave the versions with traditional internal combustion engines on sale.

Most recently, the company presented the “Porsche Unseen” gallery, which included the developments of the brand’s designers in the period from 2005 to 2019, which did not become production cars. Against the background of one of the concepts, apparently, a clay model was exposed, depicting the design of the next-generation Macan crossover (though soon after the publication the pictures with the SUV were hidden).

Judging by the image, the head optics of the next Macan will be smaller in size, in addition, the absence of a traditional radiator grill is striking – only a plug is visible in this place. Probably, the roofline will become lower and more sloping, that is, the body of the new SUV will be more “coupe-like” compared to the current version. However, it is still impossible to say for sure about this, since the stern is not visible in the photograph.
