Nonsense all this one does is to just criticize,u were in the Senate which business or industry did u set up, whether Dangote is not a father Christmas or not,do u know how many families is under his pay roll?a man single handedly built a refinery that even your government and nobody could achieve in the country to save Nigerians from subsidy scam ,fuel queues and economic dependent on dollars, call him a monopoly or whatever u like.i still give him kudos for this landmark achievement

Your wicked looting governments have use over $20 billion dollars to do turn around maintenance on the 4 refineries of 450 thousand capacity over the last 20 yrs till date no results ,Dangote spent $20 billion dollars to build 1 refinery capacity of 650 barrels per day in less than 10yrs,
If we have more patriotic Nigerians investing like Dangote, nigeria will not be in the mess it is today

PoliticsRe: Debunking Omokri's Bogus Misleading Claims About Nigeria's Economic Woes by F117nighthawk: 10:45am On Sep 07, 2024
Great analysis, thanks for schooling the jobless slowpoke

HappyRabbi:
By Isaac Adebayo

Popular Blogger and Tinubu Apologist Reno Omokri recently posted on Nigeria's current unprecedented economic woes under the Tinubu regime. In the post Reno Omokri advanced supposedly four reasons through which Government generates revenue. Omokri s intention is to justify the disastrous policies and decisions of government especially about current bludgeoning Oil Prices and it's catastrophic impact on Nigerian citizens

In the post Omokri mentioned that governments primarily generate revenue through some four means. While there are some elements of truth in them, it is important to highlight that many countries successfully leverage state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and investments to bolster their revenues. For instance, in 2022, the average tax-to-GDP ratio for OECD countries was approximately 33.8%, while Nigeria's tax-to-GDP ratio remains below 10%. This disparity underscores the need for Nigeria to reform its revenue generation strategies beyond just taxation and upholding tenets of accountability and transparency in Governance.

2. Taxation and Entitlement:

Omokri posited that Nigerians feel entitled and do not pay taxes. This is a very irrational, illogical and inconsiderate conclusion from him. Undoubtedly, Nigeria's tax-to-GDP ratio is low, but this is not solely due to a lack of willingness to pay Tax. Omokri failed to realize or deliberately ignored the fact that many citizens operate in an informal economy, where tax compliance is very challenging. For example, in 2020, 66% of low-income countries had a tax-to-GDP ratio below 15%, which is considered a tipping point for sustainable growth. However, Countries like Rwanda have successfully increased their tax revenues from 11% in 2000 to 16% in 2020 through effective tax reforms and improved compliance measures. Nigeria has a very shambolic and dysfunctional tax administration system, with persistent problems of tax disparity, multiple taxation, tax evasion and cumbersomeness in the tax governance system, citizens cannot therefore be blamed for non tax compliance. Moreover, Citizens do not feel the impact of the tax they currently pay as it hasn't directly or indirectly positively impacted their standards of living as a result of endemic corruption in Governance. Reno Omokri should rather advise FIRS to learn froml such examples as Rwanda to enhance its tax collection mechanisms.

3. Oil Revenue Comparison:
Omokris comparison of Nigeria's oil wealth with that of Saudi Arabia and Qatar displays sheer departure from truth and Harvard Certified Economic Ignorance. While it is true that Nigeria produces approximately 1.5 million barrels per day, translating to about $36 billion in annual revenue, this figure is significantly impacted by several factors, including oil theft and mismanagement. In 2022, Nigeria lost an estimated $10.9 billion in potential oil revenues due to oil theft, which accounted for about 108,000 barrels per day or roughly 7% of total production.

In contrast, Saudi Arabia, with a population of 35 million, generates around $350 billion annually from oil, equating to about $10,000 per citizen. Qatar, with a population of 2.5 million, generates $68 billion, or about $27,200 per person. This stark difference is not merely a reflection of resource availability but also of governance and investment strategies. For instance, Norway has effectively managed its oil wealth through the Government Pension Fund Global, which invests oil revenues to benefit future generations. As of 2023, Norway's sovereign wealth fund is valued at over $1.4 trillion**, demonstrating the potential of prudent management of oil revenues.

Moreover, Nigeria's oil sector contributes only about 5.48% to the country's GDP as of the third quarter of 2023, down from 9% before the COVID-19 pandemic . Reno Omokri should have known that this decline highlights the need for Nigeria to diversify its economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenues, which currently account for approximately 90% of export earnings and not making nonsensical bogus comparisons

4. Inflation and Economic Policy:
Omokri suggested that allowing market forces to dictate fuel prices is the only viable option. This suggestion shows a gross deficit of Simple strategic thinking as this approach can exacerbate and increase social inequalities. For instance, after the infamous, I'll timed and I'll advised unilateral declaration by Tinubu on his inauguration day about total Subsidy removal on the 29th day of May 2023, inflation in Nigeria skyrocketed to a frightening 22.8%, significantly impacting the cost of living and driving more citizens into deeper realms of poverty. In contrast, countries like Brazil have implemented gradual and well coordinated subsidy reforms while simultaneously investing in social safety nets, which helped cushion the impact on the most vulnerable populations.

5. Borrowing and Printing Money:
While Omokri correctly pointed out that excessive borrowing can lead to inflation, it is essential to contextualize Nigeria's current debt levels. As of 2023, Nigeria's debt-to-GDP ratio is approximately 35%, which is manageable compared to countries like Japan, which has a debt-to-GDP ratio exceeding 250%. The key issue lies in how borrowed funds are utilized. It is common knowledge that 90% of borrowed funds in the last ten years in Nigeria end up in private pockets and for white elephant projects that have become conduit pipes to milk the economy dry. Whereas, Counties like Ethiopia have successfully used borrowed funds to invest in infrastructure, leading to an average GDP growth rate of 10% over the past decade. Omokri should advise Tinubu to prioritize investments that stimulate economic growth rather than relying solely on recurrent expenditures and purchase of Private Jets, escalades and Yatchs.

Overall, What can bring Nigeria out of this current Economic predicament and uncertainty is accountability, transparency, and effective governance. The current economic policies are not only inadequate but also detrimental to the nation's long-term stability. Instead of merely allowing market forces to dictate prices, the government must adopt a comprehensive economic strategy that includes reforming the tax system, investing in infrastructure, and creating a more equitable distribution of resources. By learning from successful models in other countries, Omokri and other cheerleaders must know that this is the only way we can foster sustainable growth and improve the quality of life for all its citizens.

So what will happen from now 6th to 15th September when NNPCL will start lifting from Dangote refinery? Where will they get supply from to feed the country?will they still be importing in-between this period to continue their subsidy scam,or they have enough reserves to fill in the Gap to ameliorate this fuel scarcity the country is experiencing? Nobody is asking this question.
