Nigeria may be set for a total blackout as power generation as well as distribution companies say over N400bn debts are stifling their operations. While GENCOs’ debt is put at over N300bn, DISCOs have complained of being owed over N100bn by customers., according to a report in Punch Newspaper. With such a huge debt burden, the power firms said they lack the funding required for their operations, including the purchase of equipment and spare parts. http://skytrendnews.com/2016/11/19/blackout-looms-nigeria-power-generation-distribution-companies-lament/

The United States on Friday said it was concerned by the deaths of Nigerians in clashes between Shi’ite Muslims and police earlier this week and what it called the apparently disproportionate response of the police in the violence. Police said nine people were killed in the clashes during which officers opened fire on members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) taking part in a procession in the northern city of Kano on Monday, but the minority sect said dozens died. Security analysts have drawn some parallels between the IMN and Boko Haram, the Sunni Muslim jihadist group whose insurgency began in 2009. The violence was the latest in a series of incidents involving the sect. A judicial inquiry in August reported that 347 IMN members were killed and buried in mass graves after clashes with the army in December 2015, and two sect members were killed in processions in Kaduna state in October. “The United States is deeply concerned by the deaths of dozens of Nigerians during clashes between individuals participating in a Shia procession and the Nigerian Police Force in Kano State,” a statement by the U.S. diplomatic mission in Nigeria said. “While the matter is still under investigation, we are troubled by the apparent disproportionate response by the police,” said the statement, issued by spokesman John Kirby, which also called for “calm and restraint on all sides”. http://skytrendnews.com/2016/11/18/saddened-killings-scores-nigerian-shiites-nigerian-police-us/

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the Turaki Adamawa has declared that if he were the president of Nigeria, the Boko Haram insurgency would not take place in the country. Abubakar made this known in Yola yesterday while speaking at the distribution of relief materials to over 50,000 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at American University of Nigeria (AUN) drawn from all over IDPs camps across the the state to commemorate his 70th birthday celebrations. “If you recalled, while we are in office in 2002, such a small up raising, very similar to this Boko Haram, reared their head in Yobe State, then, we smashed it immediately. “So I think it requires a steadfast leadership,a leadership that is decisive.” He stated that, he would have used all at his disposal to ensure that Boko Haram did not take place in any part of North-Eastern Nigeria and else where in the country. “We never heard anything about it again, until we left government.” Abubakar regretted that Boko Haram took over seven of the 21 local government area of Adamawa, adding that what he did to prevent Boko Haram from completely over running Adamawa State is between him and Almighty God. Barack Obama says he has concerns about a Donald Trump presidency, and the President-elect will have to change parts of his temperament. “There are certain elements of his temperament that will not serve him well unless he corrects them,” he said. In his first news conference since the US election, Mr Obama told Mr Trump he must reach out to voters who did not support him. He told journalists he thinks Mr Trump will try to “send some signals of unity” to people alienated by what was a ferocious campaign. Mr Obama said the job of President was a big challenge, and the Presidency was bigger than one person. Barack Obama meets with Donald Trump to update him on transition planning Mr Obama says his team will do all it can to help the transition But he promised that he and his team will do all they can to help make the transition smooth. During a lengthy conversation, he said he offered Mr Trump “honest advice” and highlighted the importance of finding trusted aides for the White House. Mr Trump needed to be given the “rope and space” for a “reset”, he said, reflecting on his own arrival in the White House during the economic crisis. He said Mr Trump will have more “time and space” than he had to make “judicious decisions.” http://skytrendnews.com/2016/11/14/ive-concerns-trumps-presidency-president-obama/
