Dear readers, kindly permit me to share this lengthy but life saving information with you, fasten your seat belt and enjoy the read. I and a friend of mine were on a road trip, Cotonou to Lagos precisely. My friend was the chauffeur, while I occupied the passenger seat beside him, we were doing between 100 to 120 Km per hour, since it was a highway, and the road was quite good. At a point during the trip, we approached a very narrow part of the road, which was barely enough to accommodate two vehicles side by side, while some law enforcement officers had mounted a checkpoint, some meters ahead, thereby effectively occupying one full lane, leaving just one for road users. Since it wasn't a busy road, their activity didn't really create any gridlock. As we approached the checkpoint, we encountered a trailer/truck a few meters away from our present spot, my friend had to apply the brakes to slow down, unfortunately for us the car refused to stop, he kept trying, at that point I began to wonder, if my friend was trying to kill us both, I raised alarm and panic was beginning to set in, we both knew the emergency brake wasn't functioning, still we applied it to no effect. That was when he called my attention to the fact that, the brake pedal wasn't depressing, while I had been thinking the brake wasn't working. Just then I decided to look down to where the vehicle pedals were located, as he had to focus on the road. Alas!!! I discovered that we would have been the architect of our own demise, through sheer recklessness or ignorance as some may say. Just beneath the brake pedal, was a bottle of water, which was responsible for the brake not depressing, I quickly pulled out the culprit, while my friend applied the brake. The car came to an abrupt stop, while I disastrously hit my forehead on the lower part of the dashboard, as I had previously unbuckled my seat belt. We were both ecstatic and grateful, that we didn't have to pay the ultimate price for our negligence. Dear readers, the story narrated above isn't fictitious, it was a personal experience I had. Kindly ensure to keep your car interior clean and tidy, may God be with us all.
