ENLARGED PROSTATE
The prostate is a gland located in the pelvis between the Pennis and bladder and produces some of the fluids that carries sperm during ejaculation. It surrounds the urethra, the tube through which urine passes out of the body.
An enlarged prostate means the gland has grown bigger and it happens to almost all men as they get older (over 50) and basically it affects how they pee (urinate).
It’s known as ‘masu mato’ or simply ‘iseto’ ( in Yoruba).
CAUSES
The actual cause of enlarged prostate is unknown, but it’s believed to be linked to hormonal changes as a man gets older. This hormonal changes as the man gets older may cause the prostate to grow bigger as well.
SYMPTOMS
An enlarged prostate places pressure on the bladder and the urethra, which is the tube that urine passes through. This can affect urinary flow and may cause

• enlarge prostate is know as benigh prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) since it’s not cancerous

• a small amount of prostate enlargement is present in many men over age 40 and more than 90% of me over age 80 have the condition.
COMPLICATIONS
BPH can sometimes lead to complications such as
• urinary tract infection (UTI)
• Acute urinary retention (AUR)
AUR is a sudden inability to pass any urine. Symptoms may include
• suddenly not being able to pee at all
• severe lower tummy pains
• swellings of the bladder that you can feel with your hands.
